As we all know, Christmas comes only once a year, and so I find it hard to believe we're going to be treated to the greatest Arkle of all time in March, the line up for which could include all of Peddlers Cross, Sprinter Sacre, Cue Card, Menorah, Al Ferof, Solwhit, Thousand Stars, Sam Winner, Spirit Son, Dunguib, Punjabi etc. etc. etc.

From the crop of horses listed alone, we're sure to see a top class two mile chaser, and I just wonder if one of these beautiful animals does emerge clear at the top of the tree, would connections be tempted to side step the Arkle and have a crack at the Champion Chase, which could be hopelessly upstaged by it's novice two mile counterpart?

They are all largely unquoted for the race, however Peddlers Cross, Sprinter Sacre, Cue Card and Al Ferof can all be backed at 34/1 on here at the moment, and if you can second guess connections and have a strong opinion on any of these horses two mile chasing potentials, you could be sat on a tidy little price come March...

Thoughts?

surely only the best of the best will even consider the champion chase? so pick who you think will be/ look the best come march... i would say peddlers is the most likely candidate... but that price isnt great

You only get one chance at the novice races. Foolish to go for the senior race with a novice imo.

I've never agreed with that argument...if you've got a horse at his absolute peak, and conditions for him come the Festival are 100% spot on, then why wouldn't you have a crack at a senior race? I appreciate you only get one chance at the novice events, but you might only get this chance at the senior event...anything could happen during the following year, and surely the ultimate goal with any chaser is to win a Championship race at the Festival.

To buy into this you have to believe like me that the senior 2 mile division is full of horses who at best are very good. If you've got an exceptional novice against a very good field, I personally think it's worth taking the chance.

Alex - I agree the current price isn't spectacular, but I think it's probably due to a lack of depth in the market at this early stage. Once the money really starts to form these Cheltenham races there could be a touch more value about with people trying to nick a few quid laying horses they don't expect to run.

Iagree it looks a great race at the moment bit i think it will end up cutting up a lot.
you can cross Thousand Stars and Spirit Son off as they are staying hurdling.
Also Dunguib is out for the season.
I also think a few will end up running over further.
Im going to be very unoriginal and predict that Peddlers takes to fences very well and wins the Arkle.

As stormey has said, on paper it looks amazing at the moment, but it will definitely cut up.

Added to Thousand Stars and Spirit Son, Tizzard has said that Cue Card could go for the Jewson or even RSA, and Sam Winner will most probably go for a longer race.  Solwhit is only quoted by a few bookies, and is 25 on here, so he might be going for a longer race as well.

That leaves Peddlers, Sprinter Sacre, Al Ferof and Menorah, and I would be amazed if any of them go for the Queen Mum.  Peddlers and Menorah are pretty battle hardened so they would be the only plausable ones, as Sprinter Sacre is really inexperienced, and Al Ferof is fairly inexperienced so I couldn't see them skipping a novice race.
