i dont think grandouet would have won, i just think hes a strong traveller (not too desimilar to finians rainbow).

on that point, i wouldnt take much notice of the aintree race! also i think sam winner and unaccompanied could be good enough. time will tell i suppose!

i dont think any other trainer has a hope in hell either, i suppose that goes without saying?

Spirit Son is better than that run in the Supreme. He will be the Fly's main danger this year if there is one.

Not too sure. Maybe Christmas Hurdle? I think Spirit Son's quite likely to turn up for Fighting Fifth
Report revedesivola September 25, 2011 11:52 PM BST
itll be an interesting years racing as ever anyhow! nicky is always good with the hurdlers!
Report R Carver September 25, 2011 11:55 PM BST
Bula yes, and Spirit will not have to work for it IMO, unless he puts Binocular in it. Be interesting to see if Huricane comes - besides him, and with a question mark against Binocular, most are going over fences - Menorah, Peddlars, Cue Card (I think), Al F, Sprinter, Solwhit, and Oscar over further. I am bound to have missed a few out there. Sam Winner's last couple of runs looked bad. The Triumph suggested he wanted a trip, Aintree suggest he was OTT. I think fences and a trip will help.
Report revedesivola September 26, 2011 12:05 AM BST
nicholls reckons hes an arkle horse, looks like further would suit sam winner too

Add Jump City to the list of Nicholls' horses. Seems quite sweet on it (with cut in the ground).

I will be following it closely, hopefully it's not another Brampour.

You're correct on the jockeys issue reve in hindsight.

Very strange that in 6 months Binocular has gone from 3-1 fav for Champion hurdle to the forgotten horse.
Report neill d September 26, 2011 11:45 AM BST
He is a flat bred by Enrique, he isn't really supposed to last to be fair.
Report revedesivola September 26, 2011 12:00 PM BST
binocular is incredibly frustrating, maybe hes no good when his system is clean, if you get my driftLaugh
Report neill d September 26, 2011 12:07 PM BST
aye, he could well be just on the way down now though, in fact, I'd say its more likey than not that he is, but there isn't much depth in the 2 mile hurdling division in England so he might still nick a few races.
Report revedesivola September 26, 2011 1:04 PM BST
paul nicholls is evens with paddy powers, its hard to get excited about a price like that but its better value than 5/4 njh anyhow i think

Report R Carver September 26, 2011 10:47 PM BST
Prize money, thankfully. If it had been the other, Henderson would have won last yr I think.
Report tomdeane September 28, 2011 5:28 AM BST
Very interesting thread this one - for what it's worth I am very much in the Spirit Son rather than with Zarkandar, although I suspect neither will be a match for the Hurricane.

However, as we know he has had a history of problems and although he looks (fingers crossed) to be over them, it would not be that surprising to see him miss the Festival again. Given that Peddlers is going chasing, as are a lot of last season's better novices, I would be surprised if Oscar Whisky is not targeted at the Champion - at least until we have seen more of the other contenders. Very high cruising speed, probably still open to a little improvement, and not much to find to win a Champion (if the Hurricane were to miss out).
Report Howdi September 30, 2011 6:07 PM BST

What if he beats him (and wins) the Bula, Christmas Hurdle, Champion Hurdle, and Aintree Hurdle? (I'm joking, of course, though not about him finishing in front of Zarkander!).
Report revedesivola October 1, 2011 10:50 AM BST
Laugh nicholls will know where he is with him, and i very much doubt al ferof is better than zarkandar. if he was then hed be going for the champion hurdle surely!
Report buddeliea October 1, 2011 11:50 AM BST
Finians Rainbow has had the better of Ghizao so far.
Spirit Son i am confident will have a better season than Zarkander.
Sprinter Sacre and Al Ferof is hard to judge till they have jumped a fence.
Oscar Whiskey will imo prove to be the best horse that Big Bucks has faced over 3m hurdles.
Long Run is better than any 3m chaser that Nicholls has.

Not sure how much all of that will affect the trainers championship, but if i had to bet it would be Henderson.
Wont be betting though.
Report revedesivola October 1, 2011 12:26 PM BST
shi1t odds on it, definately not worth betting.

i think ghizao is better than fr, having said that im judging by their aintree run where form isnt always reliable. youll remember ruby tried to deck ghizao when coming with what looked like a winning challenge!

i think theres no reason to believe spirits son is better than zarkandar, and al ferof was a better hurdler than sprinter sacre. theyre both bred for chasing and nicholls chasers tend to improve a bit on their hurdling form, so i think it will be very hard for sprinter to surpass al ferof at chasing!

i think oscar whiskey will stay 3 miles, but im not sure the henderson camp think so. ive heard he might go for the champion hurdle again. wherever he goes i think hes unlikely to win tbh!

long run will obviously go well, but il be opposing him. master minded round kempton could be savageCool

we wont know until we see them race. exciting times!!
Report buddeliea October 1, 2011 12:46 PM BST
Reve,
Oscar runs over further this season, and will take on Big Bucks, thats what i have been told by the stable.

Master Minded could well be savage round Kempton, but on all evidence we have Long Run is the better 3m chaser.

Al Ferof was the better hurdler in the supreme, but by no means a given he will be the better chaser.

I think Spirit Son being older will be to his advantage, and think hes a better horse anyway, but i accept i could be proved wrong.

FR has faced Ghizao a few times now,and yet to be beaten by him.

Exciting times indeed!! And you are right,we wont know for definite till we see them race.

Spirit Son> Zarkander imo, Z will make a better chaser.
Long Run not invincible but i doubt MM will beat him, one decent 2m4f run has got everyone thinking hes back to his best again.
2m novice chasers is anyones guess, too many likely candidates at this stage
BB to win on the snaff all season long again, if this was over fences he'd be the most famous horse in history of jump racing.
Report buddeliea October 5, 2011 5:38 PM BST
well as he cant jump fences he never will be that famous. Not sure he will beat Oscar Whiskey easily.

Agree about MM but he will be hard to beat over 2m 4,if thats what they do with him.

spirit son will get laughed at by hurricane fly forgodssake, and i dont see how hes better than his run in the supreme? how? how is he better than this? al ferof came from further back and powered past him!

hinterland looks a v nice prospect and zarkander and brampour will win plenty of races between them!

as for oscar whiskey beating big bucks? hey im not a fortune teller, and id never completely dismiss a horse but we're talking about big bucks here and i would say u are talking with a little too much optimism. a horse that hasnt been beaten in years and laughs at anything that comes along side and if oscar whisky has a chance to beat him then so does thousand stars who was beat a neck last time they met and then won a good staying race in france but i dont think we'll have to wonder who ruby will be riding on the day!

as far as juviniles are concerned nichols will mop up plenty of races and im sure the old brigade in kauto and denmn will prob earn him a few quid this season if he doesnt retire them after their seasonal debuts.

kauto stone looks a very nice prospect too and should win some good races!

nichols deserves to be a short price imo.

gl if u all have a bet, just giving my 2 cents that will no doubt annoy some of u, i have strong views, i cant help it, apologies!!

night night!

Report Phalaris November 16, 2011 11:02 PM GMT
You are being slightly biased Alverado.

Henderson will always have a better string of novice hurdlers, mainly because he recruits from the flat more than Nicholls. The money up for grabs in that division however is relatively irrelevant in the context of this bet. The only significant haul is the supreme novice, in which currently Nicholls has Prospect Wells, a shorter price than any of the Henderson horses.

Hurdlers, you appear to have omitted Celestial Halo, who may be getting on, but will pay his way this year. Nicholls also has Sanctuaire and Brampour, who is a very live outsider for the CH. Binocular is finished! Spirit Son has suffered at setback and is likely to be out beyond Christmas.

Chasers, ok, Nicky has Long Run. Burton Port? Where is he? What would his expected winnings be this season? I'd take even money he doesn't win more than £10k over the season. Nicholls has around twice as many Handicap chasers in training than Henderson. This is where the money is won, week in, week out. Its about 50 vs 25 at the moment. Nicholls has significantly more chasers rated 160+, 150+ and 140+ than Henderson. For races like the Hennessey, Henderson is completely unrepresented, while Nicholls has the favourite and 3rd/4th fav. This will be a similar story for all the major handicap chases throughout the season.

Novice Chasers, again, like the hurdlers, not a huge amount of money up for grabs here, but you can't really mention Mossley but not Sam Winner, given they are a similar price for all novice events at Cheltenham. Nicholls also has Join Together and doubtless many more ex P2P types on their way.

Essentially, Long Run has to win the Betfair Chase, KG and Gold Cup for Henderson to have any chance, and even then it wouldn't be guaranteed. Nicholls has beefed up this year and simply has more horses in training than Henderson. He has already built up a gap of £350k.

This is a big weekend for Henderson and he really needs wins from Long Run and Oscar Whisky to keep tabs for now.

I think that the market has possibly overreacted slightly in making Nicholls 1/2 in places, but he's built up a massive advantage already and I think people are slightly deluded in believing that Henderson has this massively superior top end team to Nicholls. Time will tell, but Henderson only needs a couple of results to go against him and it's all over (Kauto vs Long Run for example), whereas Nicholls is still in the running whatever Long Run does.
Report revedesivola November 16, 2011 11:55 PM GMT
slightly biased there alvo, just slightly! phalaris sums things up better. chemical nickys hopes are pinned to long run winning everything he runs in i think. im not going to name every horse, but if you think nicholls only decent novice isprospect wells then youre mistaken. he got 60 new horses that he hadnt got last season and we havent seen the half of them out yet.
Report sintonian November 17, 2011 10:52 AM GMT
biased ? Massivley clueless more like.
Report sintonian November 17, 2011 10:55 AM GMT
And btw, Henderson is currently running at a 30% strike rate wins to runs ratio so to suggest he has not going yet is b0llocks, we have just not seen his best horses, but the same can be said for Nicholls.

Finians Rainbow vs Tataniano for the Tingle Creek, both horse likely to be short in the betting behind Sizing Europe.

Phalaris, how do you know Binocular is finished ? Henderson might have Master of the Hall for the Hennessy ..
Report revedesivola November 17, 2011 12:19 PM GMT
i liked the look of tataniano lto, albeit against lesser opposition. sandown might not suit finians rainbow seeing as the fences are stiff and the hill finds quite a few out, and hes a weak finisher! should be a crackin race though
Report sintonian November 17, 2011 3:31 PM GMT
the handicap he won has worked out poorly. That said, Tataniano is bound to improve for the run and is still lightly raced.

Nobody seems to mention the possibility that neither of the top 2 trainers will win all of the top races. David Pipe, Mullins, McCain to name but three who will win a few of them. Paul Nicholls should be about 2/5 to win it now though unless he gets a really horrible infection in the yard. Anyone know why Overturn is not one of the top 4 in the betting for the CH by the way? Very impressive yesterday I thought.
