NICKNAME, a top-class chaser best known for his exploits over two miles for Martin Brassil, was put down on Tuesday morning after fracturing his tibia in his stable at Haras de Victot. The 12-year-old son of Lost World, who replaced his Group 1-winning sire at Haras de Victot in 2009, recently completed his third season at stud at a fee of €2,500.
Best when the mud was flying, Nickname was initially trained in France on behalf of Daniel Wildenstein by Jean-Paul Gallorini, for whom he won seven races led by the Group 1 Prix Alain du Breuil at Auteuil. As consistent as he was talented, Nickname was also successful in a pair of Group 2 hurdles before his switch to Martin Brassil. Nickname's impact in Ireland was immmediate. He captured his first two starts including a Grade 2 novice chase over 2m5f at Leopardstown and went on to win seven further races in the colours of Claudia Jungo-Corpateux topped by a 14-length victory over Central House in the 2006 Grade 1 Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown. In a measure of his consistency, he finishedout of the frame only twice in 15 starts for Brassil, and ran up a sequence of five consecutive wins during the 2006 - 2007 season, among them the Fortria Chase at Navan, the Normans Grove Chase at Fairyhouse and the Tied Cottage Chase at Punchestown. He was retired to Haras de Victot in 2009 and has 53 yearlings in his first crop. |

We really had a much better crop of chasers in Ireland in the early and middle part of the last decade, he would have had the beating of any 2 miler I've seen in heavy ground.

I always had a soft spot for Lennon, gutted to hear about that.
My first ever time at the races was November 2006, and he won a Novice Chase on the last race on the card. I had lost every previous race and put £20 on him at evens (massive bet for me back then), and he won - don't think I've ever cheered a horse home as much since [:)] |
