If a horse wins the festival bumper as a 4yo, it should stay a lot more than 2 miles over hurdles at 6. Worth a try as he has plenty of time to go chasing if he doesn't quite get 3 miles. Once a horse wins a novice chase, it is a handicapper for the rest of its life unless it can win at the highest class. Handicaps sour 90% of horses-I know I have owned a few. They all won good novice races but 2 handicaps with too much weight and that was that.
Report call it a day September 8, 2011 8:10 PM BST
The novice chasers this year look really hot so I am not surprised an alternative plan is considered. Colin Tizzard may come across as a bumbling yokel but he is not daft. And Reve, perhaps the owner might be tempted to move the horse to a trainer capable of serving up a Festival winner......
Report neill d September 8, 2011 10:24 PM BST
If they campaigned him in some of the Irish staying hurdles, he would be very very competitive, the style of racing might suit and it would build his confidence, agree, this seasons prospective novice Chasers look the best for a while, last seasons didn't do a lot for me in truth.
Report revedesivola September 8, 2011 10:57 PM BST
id say he should stay 3 miles easily. hes playing for 2nd at best in the 3 races big bucks is going to race in though.
Report Wicketd September 9, 2011 2:28 AM BST
He'll stay the trip no doubt, I just think he's extremely ungenuine. Tidal Bay the second with the way he throws his head up in the air under pressure. Also ran in snatches last time out which was odd. Don't like that race from a form perspective either, don't think many in behind ran to form.
Report Howdi September 9, 2011 7:08 AM BST
which one wicketd the one at aintree personally thought that was the best novice race of lasteason
Report R Carver September 9, 2011 7:47 AM BST
I think this horse would improve for a good jockey. Tizz used his turn of foot at the wrong time (when panicking) in the Bula and Supreme. I think he may also have a kink.

Tizzrd if you're rading this. Buckster is made of granite Grin
Report Wicketd September 9, 2011 1:04 PM BST
I think in the Bula Cue Card was very flattered, had he not been so prominent in the slowly run race he would've finished further back. Also allowed him to travel too well, which was probably deceiving.

Howdi the Aintree one I'm talking about. Rock on Ruby didn't run to form for me, Sam Winner ran a strange race. Don't think it's worth much from a form perspective. The two Henderson novices are exciting no doubt.

There is an old adage...never be frightened of one horse! What else is around in this sphere that stops Cue Card picking up serious money for placed efforts? There could be several pay days ahead;if Big Bucks ever runs flat then the crown jewels are definitely possible.

Typical Tizzard isn't it?

Personally think he screwed CC up big time last year. Changed his mind more often than his underwear then too. Think he was trained too hard for the Bula and don't think he ran to his best in the Supreme (and young Tizzard rode a bad race). Then asked him to go again just a few weeks later at Aintree. A proper horlicks of a campaign I think.

Still think he is a very smart horse and would be a huge player in the Arkle if trained by someone with more understanding. He might still be as long as he has a normal, gradual build-up to the Festival.
Report alexmillwall September 15, 2011 11:08 AM BST
what about the longer race maybe?
Report Howdi September 15, 2011 3:44 PM BST
agree tom and now alexmillwall wants to campaign him in the national Laugh

Let's be honest...the horse was totally over-hyped after its bumper win. Visually impressive in its two novices, the hype gained momentum until some thought it would be the second coming. And I believe Joe was thinking he was on a wonder horse in the Bula, only to realise he was riding a mere mortal.I guess the disappointment must have been acute but that is racing..bubbles are there to be burst.
To blame trainer or jockey is crazy. The horse could have been ridden by Fred Winter in his pomp but still would not have won at either Aintree or the Festival. Good luck to connections this year in whichever route is taken. And when will we see Coup Royale again? Now that looks a horse with a future.
Report revedesivola September 15, 2011 10:56 PM BST
al ferof is a benchmark. cue card beat him easily by 8 lengths in the bumper but was 7 lengths behind in the supreme. cue card is not a bad jumper so wheres the issue? training?
Report tomdeane September 16, 2011 6:32 PM BST
Exactly ^. Usually I am inclined to take Bumper form with a pinch of salt when translating it into what a horse could be capable of over hurdles but let's not forget Cue Card won his Bumper as a young horse, who was far from the finished article, and as you say, he is not a bad jumper. It's hard to believe he did not improve physically from then, so why did he not do better? I honestly think in this case (again not something I ever say lightly) there has to be a big question mark hanging over connections.
