Anyone else dissapointed with the ride? It looked as though he'd be pulled up at the top of the hill and then stays on to finish 4th; a bit more of a aggressive ride might have seen him closer to the winner?

I don't want to criticise Ruby, I just thought it was strange.

wanted cut in the ground, was never going to challenge on that going. ruby just picked him as has so much potential over fences next year imo
Report dwm767 March 21, 2011 9:11 PM GMT
Hmm, interesting. I don't think it's fair to say he didn't challenge; had the race been over an extra four furlongs he would of swooped them all up! I just felt if he'd been a bit more agressive with him earlier in the race he might have got nearer...im sure if you offered him the ride again he'd ride him more forward!
Report Masterminded March 21, 2011 9:26 PM GMT
dwm couldn't agree more. gave up when he should have kept pushing him along.
Report Masterminded March 21, 2011 9:27 PM GMT
would have won as well if he did.
Report TD_Gunner March 21, 2011 9:27 PM GMT
Would have won?????

Are you mad [smiley:crazy]
Report dwm767 March 21, 2011 9:30 PM GMT
I honestly thought he'd pulled him up at the top of the hill!
Report Splicer Keats March 21, 2011 9:31 PM GMT
Not a great fan of mc coy, but he may well of won on this one.
Report Masterminded March 21, 2011 9:32 PM GMT
td watch him coming down the hill. fwiw i backed a media luz so i couldn't care less. if he had been closer he could well have won.
Report Masterminded March 21, 2011 9:35 PM GMT
mccoys ride in the race was probably worse.
Report TD_Gunner March 21, 2011 9:36 PM GMT
can't have it mate, Zarkander really impressed me, he had it sewn up coming to the last.
Report dwm767 March 21, 2011 9:50 PM GMT
That said I think Daryl Jacob getting the ride on Zarkandar was a clear statement that Nicholls fancied his chances; he must of realised Ruby will ride Hurricane Fly in next year's Champion Hurdle and wanted to build a relationship between jockey and horse! Good move really.
Report revedesivola March 21, 2011 10:15 PM GMT
yeah, interesting that punters plunged in on sam winner and zarkandar didnt come in much in the bettin. maybe just the ruby factorConfused
Report runandskip March 21, 2011 10:18 PM GMT
Even though Ruby was top jock last week imho i thought he gave at least a couple poor rides in Sivota and So Young, had both of them too far back. I suppose we all make mistakes though !!!!
yes i backed one of them :(
Report dwm767 March 21, 2011 11:23 PM GMT
I might be out of line suggesting this, but I think all is not well between Nicholls and Walsh...Nicholls seemed very upset in the build up to the Festival that Ruby had chosen Mullins horses over his! Couple of comments I read seemed like he was having a bit of a dig!
Report Cozza84. March 22, 2011 10:14 PM GMT
Think you could be right dwm, could Nicholls be setting up Daryl Jacob as next stable jockey? Not ideal that ruby is always inbetween Ireland and England i suppose. He's done all there is to do and has a baby on the way so might he ease off a bit on taking so many rides in Englanf? Also think Fehily getting so many positive results before he was injured may have opened Nicholls' eyes a bit. Ruby still by far the best imo though
Report evra March 24, 2011 4:33 PM GMT
masterminded u really are clueless if u think sam winner would have won,
"would have won if he had him closer" he could not go the pace,so what u expect him to do if the horse cannot lay up with the pace,
Report Can't Catch Me March 24, 2011 5:36 PM GMT
I got mocked to high heaven on here for suggesting Sam Winner could be a Gold Cup winner one day (after his debut at Chelts). I still think it now. Looks like he needs a fence to see the best of him, and wants further already.

I think its hard to be too critical of Ruby. If the horse really wasnt travelling, he could have done long term damage asking for too much at that stage. he wasnt to know the horse would then fly like this imo.
Report charwell. March 24, 2011 6:51 PM GMT
The amount of pocket talkers on here is incredible. Sam Winner clealry stayed on at the finish after being badly outpaced from the word go. He simply struggled for speed and the talk about positioning etc is irrelevant as he was going as fast as he could! Cut and distance will see him at his best. Some of the flat bred horses in the race have more speed in their pedigree.

1.NEEDS SOFT GROUND
2.NEEDS A FENCE
3.NEEDS A TRIP
Report Masterminded March 24, 2011 9:55 PM GMT
No evra you are clueless. If he kept pushing and pushing away he could have been in contention of winning. He was beaten 5 1/4 lengths after being eased down the hill. All i am saying is if he kept at it he would have been closer. He was  flying at the end when it became more of a test of stamina. As I have said I did not back sam winner fwiw.

Sam Winner does not need soft you fool his worst run of the season was on soft.
Report sintonian March 24, 2011 10:00 PM GMT
Nicholls always has backhanded digs at jockeys. You read it everyweek in his columns on here. It is actually quite funny reading and he seems to take things so personally. Just a born winner, I guess.
Report evra March 24, 2011 11:14 PM GMT
masterminded sounds like a shrooodie imo
Report dwm767 March 24, 2011 11:34 PM GMT
Yeah hang on, Sam Winner for 4/1 Fav for the Triumph until THAT shocking performance...on soft!

Paul Nicholls born winner!? Hahahahahahahahahaha!! Put the papers down mate, don't believe everything you read!!

You have got to be extracting the urine. Ruby gave So Young a peach of a ride and tracked Rock on Ruby all the way round. He's come there at the last with a perfectly timed run and the horse put down at the last. Whether he would have one or not barring that mistake I don't know but I do know you need spctaclesLaugh

I think a lot of people only watch one horse in a race (the one they've backed) - then when/if they watch a race back, they watch the same horse again to see what went wrong.

Not having a dig, I'm guilty of it myself - gotta be aware you're doing it though and mae an effort to watch the race holistically irrespective of your financial position.
Report seanog36 March 26, 2011 10:20 PM GMT
is the triumph so important. when was the last triumph winner that won a grade 1 novice chase or a grade 1 race at the festival, apart from katchit who won a poor champions hurdle. look at carilto briganto, 4th last years triuph, handicap managed well, 10 lbs below 5th in the triumph, Trenchent, now he will be handicapped that grade 1 only option, maybe a grade 2. when was the last treiuph winner to have long career, it should be stepping stone not a race that defines a horse.
Report Spudetto March 27, 2011 2:39 AM BST
I wasn't too happy with Ruby's ride on Sam Winner at the time, especially as I had a 99/1 antepost double with Junior, but on reflection I think he jumped high and may be better suited to fences. Don't think he'd have beaten Zarkandar anyway.
Report duffy March 27, 2011 2:43 AM BST
if he'd have pulled him up , no-one could blame him as the horse was clearly struggling and with the welfare of the horse in mind ruby would have been entitled to do that.....it's only with hindsight that people can say that if he'd kept at him all the way then he would have won......ruby can't be criticised because we are not talking about a jock swinging away going easily too far out of his ground and then getting caught out.....the horse was in big trouble and the point in the race that people are criticising him over is at a precise point when ruby was probably fearing for the horse's wellbeing..........he then began to run for him.......but you can't keep at a horse the way he was travelling in case the unlikely event the horse begins to fly....although that is precisely what happened here.

Cant sit on the fence here as I had a nice place bet on Sam Winner on here.Have not seen the race but have been told that Sam was slow away hit the first hard and was out the back. IS there any truth in this? Nicholls said post race in print that he put Jacobs on the winner and fancied it mad. Ruby had said 2 weeks before the festival that he thought Sam was a cracking e/w bet.I went to paddies on the day to have a place only bet on Sam as I expected 4 places. But 11/8 and 3places onlyLaugh...now was'nt the Triumph one of the first races that the Books started e/w 4places, some doin even 5places in the old days .....
