Looking to stay somewhere new for Cheltenham next year. Don't mind staying out of town but looking for somewhere where they will be a decent racing crowd as the place we have used for the past ten years has become increasingly dead. Anyone recommend anywhere decent? Thanks in advance.
Winchcombe is good as access from the course gets you on the right side of town, conversely Broadway may look nice but I certainly wouldn't stop there, same with Bourton on the Water, pubs there are a joke, we like Moreton in Marsh although you would need to drive (Jim Steele an ex Southampton and Rangers footballer has a pub there the Black Bear I think which is great), the Bus Journey takes about 1hr 10 mins.
We stayed in Worcester this year for the first time (30 miles but only about 32 minutes on the train, well I say that, that's what the timetable says, think we had 1 journey out of 6 on time) and the place was absolutely dead half the pubs closed Monday night, the Friday night was packed though but full of drunk Uni students. Transport links by train like something out of the third world, two trains in the morning 9 o clock then 11 o clock, with the luxury of 3 whole carriages on the way, 2 on the way back .
The next person I hear says it is a 20 minute walk from the train station to the racecourse should try checking that on google maps, we aint all Paul Nihill. (showing my age now)
As for the Betfair Arms!!!!!!! I'll enjoy my ban.
Oh and a special thank you to Phoenix taxis who did'nt bother to turn up ( even though we had prebooked lunchtime for an evening pick up) after the guvnor of our local phoned twice and they said the town was gridlocked, funny that when we called another firm Andycabs arrived in five minutes and the town centre was clear, still this only cost us a two hour delay getting back as again they had the foresight of a train at 19:44 then 21:45.
We did get stranded again on the Friday but this time was due to the traffic, and the cabbie took us all the way to Worcester for £45, between four of us an absolute bargain, thanks again Andycabs
Out of interest where did you stay the last ten years?

Why not just get a b&b in Chelt? It's not that expensive.
Too many factors such make anything else ridiculously inconvenient. The train station is quite a trek from the track, cabs can be difficult, traffic can be bad etc etc.
By the time you factor all these in I don't understand why you would stay out of town unless you have a non drinker who is happy to drive every day.
It really isn't as expensive to get good quality rooms in the town centre as many would have you believe.

She will find you a room in a fantastic house within walking distance of the town centre for about £130 per night per room for a double/twin.
I have stopped at the same house for the last 3 years. It really is unbelieveable value compared with the hotels. Under £200 per head for 3 nights b&b is a great deal. (Mon and Fri nights available too if you need them).

Thanks for the advice will check out the recommendations. Don't mind a drive to the course as there's usually at least one non-drinker per day in our group for varying reasons. Been staying at The Abbey in Great Malvern for years. Used to be very lively with the hotel running a double decker bus to the course which used to get full and plenty of racing banter in the bar of an evening. Pretty dead nowadays and they bumped the prices up hugely this year.
