i'm starting to come around to the idea that this one can make it three champion chases. wrote him off last year after he got beat but he's come back stronger this year and looks to have got his confidence back.
the more i look at the field, the less the alternatives impress me. big zeb won what looked a poor renewal last year and got done on the line by golden silver last time. Plus theres always that slight doubt in my mind that he might make a terrible blunder at some stage. I just think master minded is a better animal full stop.
woolcombe folly dissapointed in the arkle last year. besides nicholls doesn't rate him in the same parish as the master. sizing europe is interesting, back at the right trip and with the sun on his back, but he's always looked a bit fragile. somersby always gets outpaced at some stage before staying on. sure if he's only a couple of lengths down when they jump the last he'll clearly be dangerous but i'm always wary of these horses that seem to stay on when beaten, that complete dog tidal bay also springs to mind[smiley:crazy]
captain cee bee bursts more blood vessels than alan minter at a blood donors convention. mad max is interesting, given his huge size he makes the fences look small, but on the downsize he's completely lacking a change of gears and relentless gallopers don't tend to win this. you need to have acceleration.
all in all I think we are missing the obvious, the betting should be reversed and in fact on the day I would expect master minded to go off favourite.
Zebbo on better ground is an altogether different beast. Golden Silver is very useful in his won right anyway, but those conditions suit the latter rather than the former.
I actually hope French Opera wins as I had a speculative bet on him at 45 on here a while back, but can't see Zebbo not winning tbh

The only thing that you are missing is the fact that you have not already lumped on the current 10/3 that ladbrokes are offering, this is without a doubt the most overpriced horse at the festival,he is back to his very best this season as his 3 runs have proved and is so far clear of this lot that the price is a joke, the only reason that he is not much much shorter is due to the fact that people stupidly think that good ground will not be to his liking as they believe that was the reason for last years Champion Chase run, when in fact it was due to the rib fracture and an injury troubled season, everything is in his favour, including the ground, which he will handle and he will travel all over the field and win very convincingly,do not let this oppertunity pass you by as it is very clear as you have already stated above

i like sizing europe at the prices. watch the arkle from last year and going a decent pace he wings most fences, has a great cruising speed, only mad max could live with him until he blundered. has run over wrong trip and in races with pace that really doesnt suit. they'll go a good clip in the champion chase and on better ground aswel, can see him in the mix at a much bigger price than most, staying on the bridle til very late will suit as he cruises up the hill

What I am surprised about is that CCB has actually drifted a touch in the past couple of weeks despite the ground coming in his favour more than some of the others. Sure he does burst too often to ever be backed at a short price but you can get more than 12/1 on here. He is well served by a very strong pace and good ground - two things he rarely gets in his own back yard.
How many in this line-up could have beaten Binocular in a Supreme? And although he has not produced form that good over fences he has only had one chance to and broke a blood vessel in that race. Think back to the way he was cantering all over last year's Arkle winner when falling at the last in Grade 1 company.
Just think he's a very big price for a horse with the natural ability to win this if he turns up at his peak.

Sizing Europe would have imo Tom, an hour after the captain beat Binocular in the supreme he was cantering all over the champion hurdle field before going wrong. Point taken though, the risks in backing this horse are now factored into his price

i have also backed the captain at 14s for the same reasons td think he has a very good chsnce as long as he dont burst just think they have been very easy on him this season giving him sighters in heavy ground ,with good ground he should go very well ..

paul4 isn't far off though with sizing europe. captain cee bee can also play a role and he's gone very much under the radar. last year he was hyped to the heavens in the racing media. this year hardly a word has been said about him. I can't have slow somersby on my mind and big zeb is too short to even consider. would like a bit of rain for the master though.

The only way MM is anywhere near fav would be if it comes up soft. Why on earth would people back a horse on decent ground when his trainer has said he needs give in the ground to show his best.Plus his main rival loves good ground. Sizing Europe main threat to BZ imo,and Mad Max after his op is an interesting outsider. Big Zeb though imo wins comfortably barring accidents.

I was discussing this with a friend yesterday, and we came to the conclusion that punters just don't trust Master Minded anymore! Bit cruel perhaps, he's only really let us down big time on one occasion, but I do get the impression the horse has a mind of his own; if he decides on the day he's in the mood he's the one to beat, but he could turn up not interested in which case he has no chance!
Bit ground dependant too perhaps; he'll want cut, Big Zeb will want good...Big Zeb is most likely to get his own way!

well he hasn't done a lot wrong this year. I just take the view he's a better horse than big zeb, who did me a massive favour last year (a little chink of light in what was a pretty bad festival ) but i just don't think that was the same master minded we saw last year.
as far as the ground is concerned wouldn't be surprised if we did see some rain next week. and budd, do you really think that sizing europe is more of a danger to big zeb than master minded? seriously?

i do on good ground myth,if good to soft i also think he is.He ran well lto and looks to me that he will come on a lot for that. Not sure about Master Minded these days, personally think his best days are long gone.Soft going his only hope imo
