i agree rondetto, and one thing we can see from all this is that no one is respecting hurricane fly! which is incredible,i mean we have donald mccain saying "hes beat the same horse in ireland on heavy ground,i cant have him at all"
oh how i hope the fly pi$$es all over him next tuesday

I'm not comparing the talents of Go Native, Solwhit and Hurricane Fly...im just saying, this time last year year everyone was saying Go Native is a great bet, Solwhit is a great bet and on the day the two of them failed; the same could easily happen to Hurricane Fly, we'll see!

Solwhit is not the horse he was, I will say that.
Report buddeliea March 9, 2011 12:42 PM GMT
i keep saying that about Solwhit, but the HF backers(cv mainly)rip into me!!

Look,HF could literally be anything, and we just wont know till Tuesday.
He looks like a potential superstar, and if he wins impressively he will be one imo.
Personally i dont think he will win, think PC will prove to be the class act,but hf certainly could be!!
Report Wilbertros March 9, 2011 12:57 PM GMT
I think that Hurricane Fly looks much classier than Solwhit and Go Native.  Jumps well, pace to get himself out of trouble if he makes a couple of mistakes, travels well and has a change of gears.  I think Binocular's race winning burst of acceleration a couple from home will be impossible with Hurricane Fly in the field.  Then, when he does come off the bridle he looks like he really wants to get past his rivals.  Seems to have everything.  Just not sure I want him eyeballing a horse up to the line.  Should be able to lay off any bets at odds-on surely though.

Solwhit is not the horse he was, I will say that.

Solwhit may have gone off the boil in the last well but he maintained that couple of lengths adavatage over Thousands Stars he had in the Raebank so he can't have gone that far backwards.

As far as Go Native goes I sent an email to one of the Timeform lads on TR who was singing his praises and called him "Son of Harchibald" to their amusment.

He was easy to see through and those that backed him must have forgotten how he wasstopping in the Supreme and how he spat the dummy out 2 or 3 times gaist Hurricane Fly.

This is a totally genuine horse who travels well, jumps well, will get every yard of the trip and has an explosive turn of foot.

He may only have been beating Solwhit but in at least one of those races he wasn't considered to be fit enough to win and he still wouldn't be 100% for any of the others. yet he still won them all and easily.

He is going to be 110% spot on if Willie Mullin's record is anything to go by and oppose him at your peril.

That's coming from Binoculars biggest fan mate which may return to haunt me but I just cant see him coping with the fellow.
Report Tavaris Jackson March 9, 2011 2:21 PM GMT
One thing I would be worried about is Hurricane Fly getting trapped too far back and giving too many lengths to the likes of Peddlers Cross and Binocular.

His 2 best performances to me were on Good in the Punchestown Hurdle and Yielding/soft in the Future Champions against Go Native.
The ground, whatever it is certainly won't hamper him.

With a clear run I think he's the one to beat.
Report playthegameboy March 9, 2011 2:30 PM GMT
The key to Hurricane Fly is keeping him relaxed before the start. If he's any way on his toes before the race then that won't be good for backers. Should be a fascinating race Cool
Report dwm767 March 9, 2011 6:23 PM GMT
When Hurricane Fly finishes a laboured 6th/7th, i'll open a thread for all his backers to...well, make excuses I guess!!

Look, ive said this before in other threads; I don't know how you study your races Rondetto, but I make a list of all the attributes a horse needs to win it's respective race; ive done this for the Champion Hurdle and Menorah ticks EVERY single box, Hurricane Fly doesn't! Simple as that. I can't back a horse with question marks about him, and like it or not Hurricane Fly has questions to answer on the day, Menorah doesn't, he's answered them all in style, and with half a points difference in their price I can't for the life of me understand why people want to back Hurricane Fly over him!!

There's a lot of talk about 'mug money' on here and for me Hurricane Fly is attracting mug money, because everyone who's backed him are guessing, they're guessing he handles the track, they're guessing he'll stay up the hill, they're guessing he'll handle the occasion!

The only MUG on this thread is you dwn,on here attacking the Hurricane again i see,in your amature eyes he might not tick every box,but in a lot of peoples eyes he ticks every box twice and if you think its just guess work that people are backing him for the CH then you are very naive anb 'your When Hurricane Fly finishes a laboured 6th/7th, i'll open a thread for all his backers to...well, make excuses I guess' just proves that and is going to make you look, once again, very stupid.
from memory you are a huge Cue Card Fan and cant see him beat,i could easily turn round and quote you by saying that you are just guessing by backing him,how do you know he is better than Sprinter S or spirit  son or zaidpour, they have never raced each other so you are just guessing he is better

Now,to be honest their are probably 4 or 5 horses in this race that could turn out to be really special horses, and those same 4 or 5 could also turn out to be disappointing.
By all means swap opinions and try to back up yer judgements, but having a swipe at horses that could really be anything is just plain ridiculous, and bl00dy tiresome.

Haha, yeah see this is the problem; you're all filling the gaps in your heads around Hurricane Fly with the wishes of your hearts...you all love the horse, and you won't have a work said against him! You're in good company with this method I suppose; Paul Nicholls does the same with Kauto Star!

I am a huge fan of Cue Card TheFormMan, but I can assess his chance based on bags of course form, so that's a pathetic comparison! How do you know Hurricane Fly will handle Cheltenham!? Have you taken him for a spin round the course!? No, of course you haven't, so you don't know, you're guessing!! How do you know he'll go up the hill!? You don't, you're guessing!? How do I know Menorah will handle the track!? Easily, he's won round it three times! How do I know he likes the hill!? Easy again, he's stormed up it on all three of those times!!

Look lads, it's basic stuff, im not asking you to conceed anything complicated; you must have a doubt in your mind that he won't handle conditions! Please tell me, how can you be sure!? It's a ridiculous statement!

CV, how is my comment anymore antagonistic than the opening post!? The only difference is I don't happen to agree with it! Yeah I could sit in Menorah threads agreeing how good he is, but sod that, id rather row my case with people of a differing opinion!

Oh, and while we're at it CVByrne MA in Statistics...Montjeu has sire no winners in 31 attempts at Cheltenham, how do you assess that one!? You guessing this one will break the trend!?

Evra, you honestly believe all it takes to stay the Cheltenham hill is to have won over a distance further than the race trip!? If you do you are an utter simpleton, and I fear for you next week, you're gonna lose fortunes!!

Deplasterer has got a point, we get these so called superstar's from Ireland over every year, and while they've stood up in the past, in recent years a number of them have flopped!! I've fallen for a lot of them myself!! Irish racing is very poor, and a Grade One over there is the equivalent of a Grade Two over here; I think it'd pay a lot of people to note that.
Report NIGHTWALKER March 9, 2011 9:50 PM GMT
How many grade 1s Menorah & Peddlars won?

This boils down to figures horses posted and its a three horse race in my opinion - Binocular Hurricane Fly and Khyber Kim.

I truly believe last years race was a very good renewal, figures back this up.Can Hurricane match these figures ?

We do not know how much in hand he had over Solwhit or Go Native  - But you think between 3 possibly 8 lengths in hand he bang there with the other two.

I have Followed the jumps for nearly 30 years and this is a special horse alright and without sustaining injuries previously last two years i am convinced he be going for the hat trick next week.

Its not all about betting but i would love to see him win and bury the Montjeu ghost.Only two champion 2 milers better See you when and Istabraq in my lifetime - He still got time to reach them dizzy heights , he is that good.Speed wins champion hurdles and this fella got it in bucket loads.

Bumping heads with Solwhit in Ireland is a very different test to the one he will face on Tuesday.

Horses that travel well always seem to have big fan clubs regarless of what they find of the bridle.

Now that was just a snapshot of the market and there may have been better but he is still that price now after showing more consistency, durabilty, speed, and versatilty over this season than was evident then. you cant say with 100% conviction he will p**s up or get beat

obviously after the result the people who GUESSED right can come on and say i told you so

his record is 7/9 in grade 1
won easily in most of them
won over further
and on different grounds

he has beaten the same horse in slowly run races
never been to the festival
jumps slightly right at his hurdles
his impressive victory over go native was not the same go native we saw win the supreme

there are arguments for and against for hf and the other leading players in this race. which imo makes this the race of the meeting

Can't believe some of the rationale being used to oppose Hurricane Fly! I'd echo what TJ, CV (particurly on the Champion Hurdle thread), Evra and Rondetto are saying - think this horse is a superstar and will be betting accordingly.

The Solwhit thing is boring. As others have pointed out, what horses have Peddlers Cross or Menorah beaten that would get next or near Solwhit?

The Cheltenham hill. The horse hasn't even ran at the course, yet won't win because of the course!? What? Binocular won the Champion Hurdle, beaten twice previous when popular opinion was that he didn't get "up the hill". Punjabi beaten twice - Came back to win a Champion Hurdle. Sublimity beaten in a Supreme, came back to turn over the reigning champ Brave Ince, and dual champ Hardy Eustace.

Montjeu. Irrelevant. Won in the dark was third in the Triumph, Blue Bajan and Noble Prince have both run well in the County Hurdle. I don't think it was the fact that they were sired that got them beat though. It's a stat - but an irrelevant one.

Nowadaya over 2 miles in my honest opinion i think that Menorah,PC,OW,Dunguib, and Binocular would all beat Solwhit comfortably.
oh and PC has beaten Binocular.

A field here including Medermit, Solwhit, Punjabi, Dunguib, Thousand Stars and others - yet look how he travels all over them and how much ground he makes up between the last 2 fences, all while hard on the steel - and then picks up to win going away.

Never, ever get tired of watching that clip. He's the real deal.

None of them with the possible exception of Dunguib would get anywhere near a Churdle victory imo.

He could be a superstar i would say that, but his Irish form dont say that,he has to do what he has been doing in Ireland on Tuesday.

Solwhit very under-estimated by some!

Awful pity he misses the Stayers, was going to have a sizeable bet on him. Especially after Davey Russell said he'd only be riding him for a place.
Report B_H_B March 11, 2011 7:57 PM GMT
In Ireland he's won on good ground, soft ground and heavy ground; he's won over 2m - 2m4f and in races run at a crawl and at a good lick - he's delivered under all those conditions.

Last time out Katie Walsh went hard from the front all the way on Thousand Stars, yet still couldn't get him off the bridle. An inch of reign, a little slap on the neck and away he went.

The race before it was run at a crawl, some 20 seconds slower than standard, yet still won in the same manner.

I don't think he's got any negatives; he can handle everything thrown at him.

He's good enough to run in group races on the flat. Class act.

If he tracks Binocular, then his toe will quicken past that one and Binocular won't be able to quicken again to go with him.

ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMM

Thats possible, but this opposition is a lot better than that in Ireland.

Look, my original point was not that the hill would beat Hurricane Fly (although I was tempted into the argument), it was that despite how good you all seem to say he is, what a superstar he is, he's never been round Cheltenham, and you CANNOT say you know he'll handle the track, because you don't know! No one does! You're guessing he will, in much the same way im guessing he won't! I know Menorah will, and so in my book without that doubt, which can have a HUGE effect on a horse's chance at Cheltenham, Menorah rates a better bet!

What am I saying that's wrong here? I don't understand.
Report ReaseHeath March 11, 2011 9:32 PM GMT
the bit about Sizsing Europe not getting up the hill was unfathomable, imo. Never mind his Arkle win, take a look at him routing the opposition in the Greatwood on testing ground carrying a welterweight and then tell me he does n't get up the hill.

Oh yes. trainer realises champion hurdle is a pipe dream so he's put in the stayers where his jockey says he'll be ridden for a place!!

lets not forget this is a horse that's won 1 of it's last 6 races!

WHAT A MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just watched the race again and im still not convinced he's a natural up the hill; I appreciate what you're saying about the Greatwood, and he did win an Arkle, I suppose my point was although it doesn't hamper him too much I certainly don't believe it's in his favour!
Report Viva Pataca March 11, 2011 10:28 PM GMT
We didn't know if Hurricane Fly would handle Punchestown, Fairyhouse or Leopardstown before he went there and won Grade Ones at all three tracks - So I guess his ability to "handle the hill" is a risk we'll have to take. Either the horse is good enough or not, handling the track is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.
Report Viva Pataca March 11, 2011 10:40 PM GMT
As an aside, have any figures ever been put on the incline of the famous Cheltenham hill from the last flight/fence to the finish line? And how would it compare with other Grade One Jumps courses.

My own visual interpretation tells me that Navan / Naas have gradients in or around that of Cheltenham?

As much chance it will as it won't!

All I meant was everyone buys in to this odd belief that Willie Mullins is anything other than an ordinary trainer and this weird sense that every decent Irish horse is clearly a superstar!

When Hurricane Fly finishes a laboured 6th/7th, i'll open a thread for all his backers to...well, make excuses I guess!!
