Yeah thats dissapomiting to hear Eric, I miss a lot of the early in the week stuff with college and work. You'd be entitled to feel aggrieved if you backed him, For what its worth, he would have had a class edge but I'm not sure he'd have stayed.

Ya didn't think you had Eric tbh, like myself if yer gonna back a Mullins staying chaser its Mikhael D'Hageunet, but its an interesting point about him rerouting Quel Esprit, hopefully given that hes not Mullins MOST high profile horse the damage for punters will be mitigated. Best of luck to you as well.

Wicketd I am not seething I havent backed his horses I try to avoid them as he is clueless. Others might be, ask them.

I have only Mikael in the Arkle and RSA just in case Mullins didnt mess him up which he has, to cover my others so I wasnt wrong there. Happy

This sport is going nowhere imo.

soft races in Ireland dont count, Solwhit how many Grade 1's, Beef Or Salmon how many Grade 1's before coming across the sea and being royally shafted?

Hate this attitude. Cheltenham is sucking life out of everything else.BoS a very admirable animal.

what a stupid fred.

Mullins is a master.

He will have at least 2 in each novice hurdle event with a chance of winning, then he will win one the handicaps and then some.....

I'm sick of seeing all these negative comments about WP Mullins (on a number of sites). He is a top trainer and anyone who says otherwise hasn't a clue about racing. He has a yard full of top class horses and it is not easy to commit to a particular race when he has a number of fancied horses. He is actually doing punters a favour by letting them know when his plans are not finalised.

Well if you think 4 winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the last 30 years is a good tally for Irish trainers I wouldnt and it suggests the Grade 1's over there are soft.

People have their own views mine are that the continual changing of mind is not good for the sport people do complain about this not just me, to change from announcing NH Chase to then announce RSA in the space of virtually no time is daft just after others (not me) have got their money down for the NH .... laughable it makes look incompetent.

I do have Hurricane Fly (forgot) at Cheltenham and he has a good chance but no doubt if he had a choice of races it would be chop and change.

love the way people right of Beef or Salmon, sure the horse only won over a million euro, useless beast!! As for Willie, he should hand in his license now as clearly by the races he's won he hasn't a clue!! :)  Eric first rule as a punter don't talk out of your pocket

The funny thing is Eric that you can guarantee the people that are giving you grief for your point of view have had their fingers burnt in the past from Willie's misleading comments.

For the record you can add Henderson to your list for his dodgy going-ons with Binocular this time last year.

Deise59 ... I already explained it isnt pocket talk. The poster above is correct some on this thread will have had their fingers burnt. I fortunately dont normally need to consider his runners as I dont really bet in the bumper and not often the hurdle races or handicaps, however others do and it is worthy of comment.
By:

When: 06 Mar 11 00:07
How have punters had their fingers burnt by Mullins? It's your own fault if you go backing his horses for races when everyone knows he makes his decisions late.

If you backed one for the wrong race in an effort to get better prices and can't accept that those extra prices reflect the added danger that the horse might not go for that race. Then you are a sore loser.

Don't cry about things when they happen, take the hit and lay out at a loss. You win some, you lose some, don't play the antepost game if you can't take some pain.
By:
Cheltenham_Enthusiast...............
When: 06 Mar 11 00:10
There's a big difference between trying to predict what race a horse will go for in order to get a better price and backing a horse because a training states that he has an intended target.

You're blocked cant read that.

Suppose 8 winners from the last 30 years Champion Hurdles isnt bad but the Grade 1 hurdles over there softer nonetheless.

incompetent? That's a laugh!

Willie is very much old school and plays his cards very close to his chest there's no doubting that but basically he's very honest when he does speak.

Michael D is one horse who has been driving AP backers daft even before he ran again

2miles Finian's Rainbow or 3 miles Time For Rupert both outstanding recruits. Man would be mad to commit him to either race without knowing if both turn up as at his best he could go close in either.

Hi bening an either or horse WM will have discussed as much with the owner who surely see's the sense in the delayed decision?

interesting stuff on here.
no doubt he knows how to train a horse, but all this leaving it to the last minute stuff, really is their any need for that?he's always done it and personally i think he enjoys it,gets some sort of kick out of it looks like.
the end of the day he should know what race suits his horse best and aim him for that, maybe he does and just dont say anything, guess thats fair enough,he aint obliged to inform the public, but it does provide a discussion point.
As for quel espirit,if he said he is going for the NH,and then changed his mind, well thats out of order, cos when he DOES say something definite, people will believe him,cos he dont normally!!

think another thing to consider is that the sport would be pretty stuffed without the betting public,so some thought for them would not go amiss imo

The worst thing about Cheltenham is that none of the trainers seem to know what is their charge's best trip, or in many cases even if he is a hurdler or chaser. If it were just Mullins, it would not matter. Of course, as Ruby says, it is that each trainer is waiting to see how the races cut up, how each other trainer is playing his hand, before committing, but racing is not best served by the uncertainty continuing so close to the Festival. It does not happen at Royal Ascot.

The suggestion that Mullins is manipulating the situation to allow connections to hoover up the prices and lay non-runners is beneath contempt. Remarkably, it seems to have been intended as a defence of Mullins against the charge of cluelessness.
By:

When: 07 Mar 11 10:35
Ramruna, I wouldn't suggest that Mullins is laying horses. As stated, there is nothing in the rulebook that says Mullins has to keep the public informed with regard to specific targets for horses. However, anyone that watches Irish racing on any kind of consistent basis knows that the Mullins stable likes a punt, (this is the case with most Irish stables btw) It goes as high up as  Gigginstown, Joe Smooth in bumper early season for Meade as an example. It is the culture, his father Paddy 's stable wasn't a betting one, but like Willie he apparently kept his cards close to his chest. I think this is from where Willie has inherited this trait, but I would never say he was crooked or laying non runners
By:

When: 07 Mar 11 10:42
Ruby  explained why mullins leaves decisions late. Because you can assess the opposition and place your horses in races where they have the best chance of winning. Day of a lifetime for example, I'm sure mullins has decided that he has a better chance of winning the supreme than he does of winning the neptune  hence he's running him there. This must be because he knows how good so young is and will also have a good idea how good oscars well and first lieutenant are. Why should he commit his horses before he knows the opposition they will face? He duty is to his owners not the punters and he has always made it known he makes decisions late, he's warned you.
By:

I agree and stated something to that effect earlier on the previous page, I was more addressing Ramrunas assertion that I was possibly inferring that Mullins was laying horses.
By:
gutfeeling
When: 07 Mar 11 14:22
i'd say very far from incompetent, regarding targets for his horses if he wasnt one of the top trainers he wouldnt have so many good horses to make his placement of them a ballache for him hence the last minute decisions although the majority of trainers are all trying to place their horses in the race he'll have the best possible chance of winning.....doesnt make them incompetent.
