By:

When: 04 Mar 11 21:55
Yes - I think that was the one - a Martin Pipe Racing Club horse collared by another Pipe beast, ridden by Aussie Jamie Evans

... With a windmill whip action!! Just checked the result. It was Allegation nutted for MCP. If I recall correctly, Castle Sweep may have won if not making a complete hash of the last (3rd)

Also pre betfair Talbot was a mile clear turning into the straight and got touched off, think it was Flyers Nap in the Kim Muir. With the other instances above like Celestial Gold, Merchants Friend It seems in the Amateurs races that one rider tends to see the finish line about 1/2 a mile from home !!

Flyers Nap, Remember it well.
It was the first year I went to the festival (97) and recall a young Robert Thornton giving me my first winner on King Lucifer..
By:

When: 04 Mar 11 22:30
97 was when he won his 2nd festival race when he won the old Ritz Club, the race above was in 95
By:

Are you sure? Thought he beat one of JP McManus' in the Kim Muir in 97?

I'm with you now. Didn't know Flyers had won twice at the festival.
Looking back through his form, far more consistent than I thought, only throwing in the PU's at the tail end of his career.

Twas my favourite Cheltenham race 'live', before being surpassed by Kauto v Denman I.
Sense of disbelief in the crowd after the Harchibald race was unreal. Sense of incredible anticipation before the 2008 Gold Cup equally so.

Nick Dendee felt like a 1.01 loser [:(]

Back in the days before BF it was punter v bookie - the bookies where jumping for joy when it departed. Sadly this primal battle has gone with the advent of BF. I much prefer the feel of winning/losing hard cash in bookies or on tracks than a computerised balance. It sanatises the whole thing and makes me lose more too Laugh

Bet Unsinkable Boxer would've been 1.01 from a long, long way out
