A shade over three weeks away, I understand the area has had plenty of rainfall over the last few weeks, forecast snow around the UK, more rain, cold temperatures...are we going to get Good to Soft on the opening day!?

Yeah I expect so.
Softer Tuesday and if no rain during the week quicker for last couple of days, though Claisse did water on Tue night last year....

Good to Soft will be the official description.

True - but if it rains heavily on the weekend and Monday beforehand, it may actually be soft. It won't be anything better than gd-soft as that's the stated aim of the Clerk of the Course.

There will be lots of outraged comments here about Claisse leaving the taps alone , not favouring good ground horses etc, but if you haven't factored this into your punting for day one especially, more fool you.

Times suggest it was Good last year on the first day.
Hence he watered on Tuesday evening.

official description will be good to soft regardless of whether its firm or heavy or anything in between

Absolutely,Reve.

Flying - I think the going description was changed during Tuesdays racing last year.
I was fortunate enough to walk the course before racing and you couldn't dig a heal in anywhere, I made it good ground at 10.30 and it was a warm sunny day.
The official description will of course be good to soft

Below is the 6 years, with official ground description, followed by how it actually rode, according to jockeys.

2010 g/s (good in places) rode like good
2009 g/s (soft in places) rode as described
2008 g/s rode softer
2007 soft (g/s in places) rode dead
2006 g/s rode good
2005 g rode good

Good, G/F & Firm is throwing your money away. End of
Report horse9 February 20, 2011 8:06 PM GMT
GI Mac - thanks.
Must have been 2007 that a deluge hit the track an hour before racing turning it soft.
As Willie says, the quickest it will be is good to soft.
