Colin Tizzard has confirmed that his stable star Cue Card will head straight to the Cheltenham Festival without another run.

Last season's brilliant Champion Bumper winner lost his unbeaten record over hurdles on his latest appearance in the International Hurdle, but was far from disgraced as he chased home the classy Menorah.

Tizzard suggested over Christmas that his charge could still have another outing prior to a bid for either the Supreme Novices' Hurdle or the Champion Hurdle, but he has now ruled it out.

"He's going straight to Cheltenham, but we've not decided which race he's going to run in yet," said Tizzard.

Cheers, has to run in the SN now surely!

I'm surprised they haven't made a decision on the race. Surely if they are not planning another race, then there is nothing of significance to be learnt ahead of his next target - so they must know.

Disagree -race may break up - for example they may consider that they currently have Binocular,Peddlers and Menorah to beat- Binocular(Sandown) and Peddlers (Haydock)are both due to race again before the festival and you simply cant know if they and Menorah will line up at Cheltenham. Agree if they were all fit and well he would look to the Supreme but must be best to keep options open.

I hadn't really thought of it like that, thats a good point. They could have added something along those lines if thats what they're thinking, although I realise they have no obligation to say anything

I think he will run in the Neptune.
Got outpaced last time and is a strong stayer. Two miles against ex flat horses like Zaidpour will be tough.

supreme surely although you never know him tizzard one minute he is out again then he is then he's not. These trainers drive me mad
Report brigust1 January 18, 2011 3:03 PM GMT
A chaser in the making and I think they will choose the easier option. In other words they will wait until others have commited to their particular races.
The Tizzard's are no mugs. They know what they have, and the form is not working out great, so a win will be the main aim. For me the Neptune looks the race but I have backed him in both just in case. Big in the Netune and a saver in the Supreme. Dodged the Champion altogether. Surely they cannot be considering that?

The fact that both his races at Cheltenham this year have been over the shorter trip seems pretty strong evidence of which way they are leaning.

Far be it from me to guess what any trainer is going to do. In his stable tour he said Cue Card was going to run every month and 6 or 8 times this season.
I just think with his NHF form getting mullered they will choose the easier option, whatever that is.
I thought Thousand Stars was a great bet for the Arkle but WM seems to have decided to keep it over hurdles running down the field in Gr1 races. Even though it jumps well at home.  Just makes no sense to me. Absolutely bonkers.

So cos Cue Card got beat by the Champion Hurdle 2nd fav he should go for the neptune? Jesus. When on earth has he proved he stays 2m 5f in a strong race.
Report brigust1 January 18, 2011 4:34 PM GMT
Read the fooking thread SJ, read the fooking thread. I never said anything about being beaten by Menorah. I am just guessing where they are going to run Cue Card. I also said I backed him in both so why dont you read the fooking thread?

I did read it

You're right SJ, apologies in order. Still think that will be among the points that determine their thinking. We will see, won't we?
Love the horse but think the Neptune will be the easier option, will they?

We have reached the stage when ante-post slips rule heads.

And i'm probably the worst offender Laugh

It is the lack of another run that has surprised me, whichever race he goes for.

In his two Cheltenham runs this season he has shown greater than expected "greenness" to my mind.
Report resner not lesnar January 19, 2011 2:40 PM GMT
I can't see them opting for the Neptune, I seem to remember Joe Tizzard saying after he won at Cheltenham in November that they would definitely be sticking to 2 miles with him - I see it as a straight choice between the Supreme and the Champion Hurdle. Personally I hope he goes for the Supreme as he's still young and this years Champion is looking really hot and he's already been beaten by a horse who most only have as 3rd or 4th fav
Report Autocue January 19, 2011 7:14 PM GMT
Tizzard's done a good job pretending he hasn't got a clue what he's doing. First he was going to run every month, then it was three races before Christmas, then another run at the end of January, now he's going straight there. It keeps the press on their toes; he's really quite a shrewd man. The plan is the supreme. The champion was a possibility after the easy novice hurdle wins but that was before Menorah. You just need to see Joe's reaction after that race to see the game was up. I doubt we'll ever see him in the champion as the Arkle will be on the agenda next year if all goes well.
