it would have to be the 1991 champion hurdle for me when fidway was cruising at the 2nd last when unseating steve smith eccles. more recently it would have to be the WH chase when joes edge won and i had distant thunder and juveigneur. that hill seemed to last forever.

Denman's defeat by Nicanor in the RSA Novice Hurdle did some damage.

Rhinestone Cowboy's defeat in the 2003 Champion Hurdle brought an abrupt end to my relentless Neil Diamond choruses - on reflection now, he actually ran a decent race - one of those bridle horses that we all fall in love with from time to time even though we know we should n't innit?

Hurricane Fly reminds me of him a bit though I think HF has more speed.

I've just remembered another disaster.

Refinement getting up then somehow not winning.

I went from a feeling of ectasy to agony in about 2 seconds.

Long time ago but Cima getting beaten by a horse from France called Shiny Copper in the Triumph then 2 years later getting beat by Dawn Run in the CH with the first ever 7lb mares allowance. Well backed by all of Jim Old's owners at the time. We got it back on Collier Bay a few years later.

^ That is so true, a remarkable race that still blows me away when I watch it.

Not such a famous race but Stormez getting chinned by Sudden Shock was a bummer for me.

Agree about Sudden Shock. Just racking my memory - Sausalito Bay doing Best Mate, who took the long route, in the Suprme.

Bensalem William Hill. The whole way I was just thinking "don't fall, don't fall, don't fall.." then he got to that dreaded fence absolutely cruising and..Cry

Nick Dundee - for the what might have been-ness, especially given what LLT went on to do.

The 2000 Gold Cup - Gloria Victis dying and then a few weeks later Lake Kariba and Strong Promise dying at Aintree. Those deaths, Foot & Mouth and LLTs injury was a terrible time for National Hunt racing and as a result there was a vacancy for  a big star like Best Mate.

Juveigneure. Man I was gutted.

Moscow and Kauto's unseating and epic early blunder respectively were crushing.
By:

When: 07 Jan 11 21:00
Kauto's CC fall was bad - he was unbeatable, and i'd backed it as such Sad
By:

When: 07 Jan 11 21:01
Valiramix in the Champion - had not backed it, but it was awful - tragic for the horse & connections, and the last thing jumping needed at that time.

Horse was ended that day in heavy ground in January at Cheltenham, he'd given up the game before he ran in that World Hurdle. AP was in tears after that fall, he loved that horse.

CVByrne-i was there for both races and driving down to the January race i was praying Jonjo wouldnt run him.
As u say that race finished the horse but i dont think he was as good as i had thought anyway.

R Carver you have just reminded me of Valiramix. Was very young at the time but that was an awful memory.
By:
AL BUNDY
When: 07 Jan 11 21:28
The galling thing about Valiramix was McCoy taking his helmet off, slamming it in the ground, rather than gathering the hobbling horse. I didnt like that.

Williamson quickly grabbed Nick Dundee and lived to race again. Wouldnt have mae a difference to Valiramix, but he wouldnt have had to take those few agonising steps.

The three most hideous ones for me were Harchibald (of course) Merchant's Friend (28/1, must have been 15 lengths clear...it seemed that) and the unbelievable omission that is Wayward Lad - probably the biggest hoof in the sac I've ever had in racing besides the demise of old warriors Sad

Carvill's Hill 10s the Gold Cup barged out of it, not a great jumper.
See You Then 2nd the Triumph Hurdle 12s after the jockey had been bigging him up, wonder what happened to this horse?

Gold Cup got me twice! Was on The Fellow (a genuinely great chaser) at 33's when he was beaten by Garrison Savannah ( a genuine mediocrity), still think the photo was doctored! Was on Cybrandian at 25's, couldn't get to a TV that day and the radio commentator had me convinced I was home and hosed! More recently I cursed McCoy when he got Rhinestone Cowboy up from the dead when Maljimar would have staightened me out for about four festivals!

Long time ago now but big double Brigadier Gerard (2000 gns)12s and Persian War (Ch Hu)4s bt by Bula. Still got the AP voucher.

More recently:

Maljimar, keep seeing AP's finest hour so can't forget it.

Thing Norman Williamson rode in the stayers. Rode a shocker, last day and finished 2nd, let me down very big time.

The pertemps at the 2003 festival...... I had backed Iris' Gift at all rates from 20s down to 7s.

Jonjo ran it in the Stayers as a novice where it finished 2nd to Baracouda, in what may have been one of the strongest Stayers Hurdles in term of depths for a long time at the festival!!

Trainer said it would have won the Pertemps by half the track!! :-(

2 for me

The first one was the tragic fall (and death) of the great Lanzarote in the Gold Cup

The second was when Forgive and Forget broke a hind leg coming towards the last couple of fences when absolutely cruising (jockey said "would have won by a minute").

Both utterly tragic losses of superb horses, and both financially tricky as well.
