I'm firmly in the 'I think Joncol will win a big prize this year' camp, and if the ground comes up in his favour, I think he's good enough to win a Gold Cup.
I thought the documentary on the Nolan yard made brilliant viewing. He came across as a genuinely good egg as well.

Does not need it very soft, its been a safety issue to date. The horse is 18hands high, and has been given time to fill out that massive frame. Horses this big can do a leg very easily. Given how talented he is, no one can blame the Nolan's for keeping him at home until he has matured physically.
Pt2Pt winner as a 4yo, G1 winner over 3miles, 3rd on other two starts over 3miles, both G1's and excuses for defeat both times - stood on nail at Punchestown; they went to the front too soon in the Lexus. Screams non stayer to me

Should have run and won the punchestown gold cup. I had a packet on then he was a non runner. I have him backed for the gold cup, him or pando will win it for us. I'll be backing joncol in every run this year. To horse imo.

I just have the feeling he may be this seasons Notre Pere. I think Cooldine will better this year add to that Pandorama and possibly Sizing Europe amongst others and he may find things more difficult. As far as the Gold Cup is concerned you would think its unlikely he'll get his ground or be good enough

I am still mortified about my 70/1 a/p bet on Joncol for the Sun Alliance a few years ago when he didn't turn up for the race. History shows that he must have gone very close. I now content myself with backing him in Ireland.

Regarding the staying point, I think you will find that the Gold Cup is run over in excess of 3m2f.
Wayward Lad won 3 King Georges over 3mile yet did not stay the trip. One Man won King Georges at Sandown and Kempton. He also won a Hennessy over 3m2f at Newbury. He did not stay the Gold cup trip.
His stamina is unproven. He has looked to be coming to the end of his stamina limited in the 3 mile races that I have watched him in, although he did pass a not quite right Cooldine. His sire also has not got many stayers if any, at the distance.
It might be worth doing a little bit of thinking before ridiculing a poster's comments.

Florida Pearl another prime example of a horse that did not stay the Gold Cup trip, despite having numerous successes at 3miles and even proving him over further than 3miles in the Sun Alliance Chase.

Think cooldine is the best Irish GC contender.Did not settle at all in race this year,so would excuse that run. All about opinions, just dont think Joncol will be good enough over 3m2f at Cheltenham.

Distant View- There's nothing about his breeding that suggests he won't stay. Bob's Return has had horses that have stayed and occasionally excelled in excess of the Gold Cup trip don't confuse not being a top class horse with not staying. Plus with the stamina influence from the Dam side (Montelimar Dam Sire)I'd have no concern from a breeding perspective.

imagine Joncol would have 10 stone if he turned up in Newbury For the Hennessy against Kauto and co!! Never would one so big have carried so little!!!Pity it wont happen!

id say the biggest race hes goin to win are the irish g1s, of which hes won one already. cant see him being a gold cup horse and will never get heavy ground anyhow

He won't go to Cheltenham in my opinion. Paul has already said it is not really part of the plan this season. He will go for the Lexus, Irish Hennessy and i'd say for the Punchestown Gold Cup

He is a huge horse who finds co-ordination difficult when he gets tired. I suspect he is always going to be better on a flatter track, and IMHO wouldn't get the trip at Gold Cup pace.
