Hi Guys,
Very taken with the Aidan O Brien trained Table Mountain in his 3 starts to date.
A son of Milan, he ran a screamer off 86 in a hot Naas handicap yesterday.
I see he is entered in the Horses in Training sale.
Any views on him??

Robbie Hennessy more than capable of getting one ready for The Triumph. Donegal just didnt take to jumping but he did a fantastic job with Sublimity after taking it off John Carr.

Deadloss I have a lot of respect for your opinion after reading offerings on the various forum threads. However I must take issue with your last post. Robbie Hennessy is a horrific trainer. A toddler could train sublimity. He has made a hash of the majority of the rest of the horses he has had in his care (and squandered hundreds of thousands to boot). I wont be surprised if table mountain is being prepared for a 0-109 handicap hurdle in thurles this time next year.

Sublimity didnt show the same form after winning the Champion Hurdle for John Carr and has returned to form since joining Robbie. Second in a couple of Fighting Fifths (beating Binocular), winning in ireland and then second to Solwhit. Not bad form.
As for the new purchases maybe he hasnt been buying the right horses to go jumping. Plenty of people have spent money and they havent taken to jumping. Also, he is buying horses who have shown form in England/on better ground than likely to get in Ireland. I also dont like this sale. With some exceptions the horses have had a long season running on the flat so been in training a while and are ready for a break. However, they are then schooled and trained for the NH game. It could mean that they are in training for a month or so shy of a year. I dont recall too many horses doing anything from this sale last year and it is very expensive with NH trainers, Dubai Carnival and other Arab countries after the horses. I think if he gets a good one hes more than capable of getting it ready for the big days. But like anything it depends on getting/buying the right ones. |

You are right deadloss. I have bought several from this sale and I always give them the Winter off then bring them back for a short spin on the flat and then hurdling the following Winter. They tend to last a lot longer that way.Recession Proof came from last years sale and he has only just started hurdling.

In my opinion the latest you want to be buying a horse to go jumping off the flat is August. At least can give them a break before schooling them over hurdles for the first time. If you want a horse to go jumping I think you are better trying to buy it privately than through the sales ring. Each to their own I guess.
Walkon was bought in June, Mille Chief in Feb and Franklino in April. They had all raced as 3yo before buying them and could then give them a break before racing. Recession Proof looks a good buy and certainly one that has benefitted from the time off. Looking at the sales figures today it seems the best value in Newmarket lies in the July Sale although the quality isnt as good. |

pmt has it exactly right, it can be better wait and have a novice season instead, you could still give them a few runs on the flat. Also as a novice they'd have the option of running in races over longer trips than 2miles, whereas if a juvenile were to do this he'd be taking on older horses. Table Mountain could conceiveably want more than 2 miles over hurdles by next March, Last season showed that juvenile hurdling can often be for whippets.
