Laugh i was wondering when this thread would get started

Denman - Royal And Sun Alliance Hurdle (i felt like going hom after that 2nd day Cry )

Moscow Flyer - Queen Mother (the year he unseated, i almost cried Laugh )

Shinrock Paddy - Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle (just last year, he ran absolutely no race Plain, had i got well ahead with Weapons Amnesty i would of been in some pisser)

Rushing Wild in the Gold Cup

If he had won I would have finished 3rd in the Ten to Follow comp! Prior to Chelt that year, the RP posted the top 100 lists and I was sitting in 60th and was the only person with RW.

Felt pretty awful after the race - but that could have been the burger (or three days of over-indulgence).

Recently it is Dunguib in the Supreme. I decided foolishly that he was a certainty and would pay for the meeting. I should have learned by age 66 that backing favourites is a fools game but he looked bombproof. Sorry The Sawyer about Rushing Wild. I always thought that Jodami was a certainty given a fast pace and RW gave him a perfect lead. The following year they crawled round and The Fellow mugged Jodami for speed from the last.

I love high class horses with that little bit of something and Canford Cliffs had it all for me.

When he was beaten in France it was the biggest bet of my life. Took me a long time to get it back but that wondeful girl Zenyatta went a long way towards my recovery and just about every big bookies dismay :o)

Canford Cliffs made up for it big time though. I let him run in the Guineas got stuck into him again in Ireland and couldn't get enough on when he beat Rip Van Winkle. Just as well or I'd be back in the grubber.

I'll be following suite and hammering Zenyatta again so if she gets beat send flowers.

Report sageform September 29, 2010 12:48 PM BST
Zealot, the defeat of Flyingbolt that day was the outcome of a careful plan by Johnny Haine and Bob Turnell. They ran Flash Bulb against him in the QM the day before and went flat out for a mile and a quarter to make sure that Flyingbolt had a hard race. It just did the trick. I can remember the two white faced chestnuts coming to the last in driving rain and the little un just prevailed. I knew Johnny from childhood and we were on SS big time.

How greedy do you have to be to risk 19k for just £19 profit? Ive no sympathy for these people.
Report revedesivola September 29, 2010 10:03 PM BST
ah dont be like that. everyone makes mistakes but saying that if binocular had have skipped the festival because he was going the wrong way people would say its the easieast 19 quid u cud ever make!!!
Report CVByrne September 29, 2010 10:07 PM BST
Point being we all remember kicking king. Unless the horse has an injury that would rule him 100% out of racing then there is risk there. Where there is risk there is reward, however small it may be. Only by winning or losing money can the decision be right or wrong. If you've 19k to tie up to win £19 I don't think money is going to be a problem in life.
Report revedesivola September 29, 2010 10:16 PM BST
wise words there cvb. I dont think laying 1000 to 1 shots is a great idea but less so is slagging off a lad that has done so!
Report Rampage Jackson September 29, 2010 10:18 PM BST

I take the abuse on the chin and find the whole episode funny now, but I won't be laying at 1000 again unless a horse is deffo not running. Over the years I have laid hundreds of horses antepost at 1000 and probably picked up half of what I lost on Binocular. It isn't "robbing" really is it ? Anyone backing a horse at 1000 is in no doubt that there is something amiss surely ! If they have laid a ton at 10 and would now like to free up their grand by backing it for a pound at 1000 AND I already have a big liability on another horse and am happy to have a few quid dripping through every day on 1000 horses then everyone is happy.

I don't want sympathy but think "robbing" is a bit harsh ! Not horses I know but I laid a chunk on Ulrika when she won Celebrity Big Brother and that hurt plenty :( It was enough to make me vow not to touch reality TV betting again, and that's the point - we all get stung on something every now and then but as long as you treat it as a very expensive lesson then it may well be money well spent.

Nice to be back after the traditional flat sabbatical, looking forward to all the drama of the coming season in what is a golden age for jump racing. Long Run could well be dominating the topics again this season !

Laying Binocular at 1000 in the CH in March ! Laugh

Had £2.77 on at 153.47, was by far my biggest win this years festival, i backed it after i seen it at 1000 and thought something dodgy was going on and indeed i was correct [:D]

My biggest loss was Kauto Star this years gold cup also, though with the amount i had on at all rates down from 5/2 for the KG i was merely losing profit money! Had Imperial Commander at 14s and Denman at 7s for compo money mind you but it still hurt to see him going oh so well before hitting that fence and then he just wasn't the same, i am sure any other horse and Ruby would have pulled him up, i am sure he was 50/50 in his mind whether to or not after the initial blunder.
