Almost certainly Nicholls will have better prospects, and was put in place in novices eventually last yr, but interesting entry in Beginners Chase at Fontwell on Thursday.
I am never quite sure to what extent, if at all, horses manage to spook each other when you have a field of beginners over fences. Looking at Pepe Simo's race, you could almost think there was a chain reaction of wariness among the field, with poor jumping from one or two setting off the same in the others at various points. None jumped particularly well throughout in that race.
I guess I would be more inclined to be forgiving when a beginner jumps poorly in a race where few, if any, of the others have jumped well. I tend to see it as more damning when you have a novice who jumps poorly in a chase where others they are racing against, who are not significantly more experienced or able, all manage to settle and jump well through the race.
So, on that basis, I would be interested to see Pepe Simo out over fences again. But as others have said, with the top hurdling mark he managed to attain, he is probably not going to be top drawer in either discipline, as you would also have to say about Frontier Dancer.
