looks like Ricky is going to get zero credit again tonight which is a shame. The bloke has heart in spades and it keeps making up for technical deficiencies. He got taken to school for six rounds that was clear to see...maybe a tiny part of it was ring rust but clearly chelo was the better boxer by a mile. But there's more to being a champion and he keeps showing he's got what it takes. We'll see what comes out in the aftermath but I don't completely buy the broken wrist line...gonzales's legs looked absolutely **** in 8 and 9
Report sj May 11, 2013 11:47 PM BST
He should get credit for winning cos he totally out hearted Jose. But talk of Broner is and always has been crazy
Report I_McHunt_Pro-Punter May 11, 2013 11:48 PM BST
AUDREY FOUGHT ON WITH A BROKEN HEART, MANY A TIME. THIS GUY ONLY HAD 3 ROUNDS TO SURVIVE, BURNS NEEDED TO KNOCK HIM OUT AND HE WASN'T GOING TO DO THAT.

ANOTHER ONE OF THEM ODD BOXING RESULTS THAT COME ALONG ON A REGULAR BASIS, I'M NOT HAVING IT THAT GONZALEZ COULDN'T CARRY ON JUST FOR 3 ROUNDS GIVEN A WORLD TITLE WAS AT STAKE AND BOXERS IN THE PAST HAVE CARRIED ON WITH WORSE INJURIES FOR LONGER THAN 3 ROUNDS.
Report mactheknife May 12, 2013 9:43 AM BST
Heart of a lion Ricky Burns.
Gonzalez was class for 7 rounds but only he knows why he quit when he did.
On this showing I think they need to be careful where they go with Ricky, Id steer clear of Vasquez as he can frustrate a fighter, has the class & heart to go with it.
Id like to see Broner in the trenches at least once before I give him the respect accorded to Vasquez.

http://sosoboxing.com/boxing-video-watch-online/ricky-burns-vs-jose-a-gonzalez/

Don't feel robbed Ricky won fair and square. Showed a champions will. Just watched it again myself, excellent fight. I  think Ricky found a way to beat a very very good boxer last night...we know Ricky can box much better than that though his timing was way off and I'm not sure that was 100% down to Gonzales. Maybe rust or the pressure to perform or under researching his opponent. Really there's no need to look for excuses though, showed incredible fortitude and deserves all the credit in the world. I was already a big fan admittedly but I'm backing him blind until he loses now, including against Broner should we get the chance. Yes Broner would probably have too much for him but I don't think it's the mismatch some obviously do. Gonzales movement and reach frustrated the hell out of Ricky last night and made him look foolish at times, whatever you think about Broner you have to admit he's much more hittable than that. Ricky would have some success but even though he showed a good chin last night I suspect Broners greater accuracy would probably be too much. It's a great fight though imo, pity we'll probably never see it.

You do worry now that Eddie will get over protective and stick him in with Rees next. Would be a crying shame because for all the stick he gets his lightweight resume isn't looking too shabby now.

Report larrence May 12, 2013 12:32 PM BST
burns has to be one of the nicest people in boxing, a very likeable guy. Who deserves his success.Cool
Report Duketurtle May 12, 2013 12:34 PM BST
Too much credit again here for me, he was completely outclassed by boxrec's 80th ranked lightweight. Gonzalez was much better than his rating suggested and worthy of a mandatory shot but Burns shown how unbelievably limited he his is skill wise, highlighting why they've kept him away from the top fighters in and around his division.

How hard is it to out heart a severely injured fighter who isn't throwing punches?

Keep the hype up though, there's a tasty price around the corner if they ever decide to try and unify.
Report I_McHunt_Pro-Punter May 12, 2013 12:45 PM BST
^^^^^
GREAT POST DUKE, AGREE 100% WITH YOU HAVE SAID. ITS NOT HARD TO LOOK GOOD AGAINST A FIGHTER THAT IS INJURED AND ISN'T THROWING ANYTHING BACK AT YOU, THEIR IS NO DOUBT THAT RICKY BURNS HAS HEART, ITS JUST HIS ABILITY IS VERY LIMITED AT THE TOP LEVEL.
Report alabaster crashes down May 12, 2013 12:59 PM BST
is he an elite level fighter? Obviously not. Will he give any of the other champions a good fight? Definitely for my money. There are obvious parallels with Froch aren't there..both have the ability to beat more technically skilled boxers due to sheer bloodymindedness and putting the work in in the gym. Will they do it every time? Not a chance but they'll always give a good account of themselves along the way. I find that admirable.

Long time Burns opposer's are going to need a tasty price to recoup losses at this rate...many fancied him to lose his last three fights and plenty got stung in running last night.
Report Duketurtle May 12, 2013 1:22 PM BST
You're not wrong on that front Al, had the Savlon out for the fingers after Katsidis. Was cursing that I wasn't against him last night for most of the fight, his stroke of luck to keep the title almost feels like a winning punt in itself.

I don't rate Froch and Burns is a poor man's version - less powerful and more fragile. I don't see him as the sort to simply out guts more technical boxers if I'm honest, Martinez was a free swinger and Gonzalez broke a bone or two. He was on the ropes several times last night, as he was against Martinez. Never seen that from Froch and he's been in with much better opposition.

There may have been a bit of ring rust early doors last night, even still he looks like he'll be massively vulnerable and out of his depth in any sort of unification bout.

Simple answer is  to stop fannying about and get it made. Reality is he'll probably fight the winner of Crolla-Rees
Report mactheknife May 12, 2013 1:25 PM BST
Duke, Burns continues to find a way to operate at the top level.
Who would you like to see him in with next & why?
Report alabaster crashes down May 12, 2013 1:30 PM BST
I rate both of them but that's just the style of fighter I'm drawn to, underdog mentality probably. Froch is far more complete fighter for me but if Gonzales hadn't have quit last night there's a good chance Ricky could have got his Jermaine Taylor moment and any talk of injured hands etc would have been soon forgotten.

Sadly I suspect you're right about crolla-rees winner Cry...if they wait till september to get that on it's just a disgraceful fight...he did look rusty last night so I could just about tolerate it as a keep-busy/sharpener.
Report mactheknife May 12, 2013 1:46 PM BST
Yet they found fit to put Ress in with Broner?
A match up that Broner`s camp was content enough to take to showcase his skills.
All he  got afterwards was compliments but if Ricky fights Rees its a step down?
Report alabaster crashes down May 12, 2013 1:52 PM BST
to be fair they only put Rees in with Broner cos ricky turned it down!

And broner is 23 with 25 fights, Ricky is 30 with 36 fights. There's no doubt in my mind that Rees is a poor fight for ricky to be taking at this stage.
Report alabaster crashes down May 12, 2013 2:01 PM BST
If he really isn't going to fight again until september the perfect opponent would probably be DeMarco. Good action packed fight where he should win but would learn something along the way.
Report Biscar Two from a mile back May 12, 2013 2:02 PM BST
All this hate for Burns I could understand if he was cocky arrogant or disrespectful but he is none of those. However he is scottish so that might explain some of the animosity on here.
Report alabaster crashes down May 12, 2013 2:11 PM BST
it's not exactly hate is it, just some people happy to take him on. The scottish angle is just bollocks frankly.
Report mactheknife May 12, 2013 2:14 PM BST
I would go with De Marco as well alabaster.
He is a come forward fighter the type Ricky does best with.
No doubt in my mind Ricky would take him.
Report sj May 12, 2013 2:20 PM BST
no hate for Burns cos he's scottish at all. He showed great heart last night but is limited at the very top level. Gonzalez's last 6 opponents had lost 48 combined in Broner you are talking about Boxing next superstar along with Alvarez the other side of the pond it s incredible to think someone like Burns stands a chance.
Lets be honest here the man at the time was a two weight champion and when offered the fight his management replied "Ricky isnt mentally ready" now get a grip people he doesnt want the fight and has never wanted it
Report Duketurtle May 12, 2013 3:13 PM BST
Kevin Mitchell, Paulus Moses, Nicky Cook, Joseph Layrea, Andreas Evenson and a shot Michael Katsidis (evident from the first couple of rounds, not post fight reflection). Completely outclassed last night until Gonzalez broke his hand. How is that operating at the top level?

I'd like him to fight someone at the top level, ideally a fellow champion. That's not really too much to ask from a two weight world-champion is it?
Report sj May 12, 2013 3:22 PM BST

I've said all the way through the thread that he's obviously a lovely fella. My missus' parents are from Scotland, which you might think could be a reason to dislike the jocks but it's not.

No Scot or Burns hate here, you really need to take the tartan tinted specs off though bhoys.

Burns was ready to fight Vasquez, a very dangerous fight for Ricky 7 not one I would want him to take, was`nt his fault the mexican pulled out.
Id fancy Ricky against anyone Broner has beaten at lightweight.
Report sj May 12, 2013 7:32 PM BST
Vasquez didnt pull out the fight was never signed. I'll quote Alex Morrison again "Ricky isnt mentally ready for Broner we need another couple of fights" Deary me. Two weight world champ isnt mentally ready
Report mactheknife May 12, 2013 9:00 PM BST
I think `AM` meant Ricky was`nt in the right frame of mind after his last couple of fights had been postponed.
Broner has a lots going for him but lets not get carried away.
Daniel Ponce De Leon moved up a weight & made him look bad?
Report sj May 12, 2013 9:07 PM BST
He won a close victory over a two time world champ. I think we can let him off that we've Burns being splattered by Car Johansson later in his career.
Nobody carried away he along with Alvarez is being billed as Boxing's next superstars. Compare what Broner done to DeMarco and Burns with Gonzalez would be a better line.
I just hope Ricky at the age of 29 and a two weight champ is mentally ready the next tome the fight is offered to him
Report notsohappy May 12, 2013 9:24 PM BST
watched the fight again, gonzalez didnt chuck it because he broke his hand.the few punches he threw in round 8 showed no signs of a broken hand.in round 9 his legs were all over the place,he simply had nothing left, didn't have 3 rounds in him, thats what it takes to be a champion.
