Think it's about time we started this thread.

What's all your onions?

I'm waiting for the weigh-in. Mitchell looked a bit chubby the last time that I saw him (the sit down, face to face interview with Burns) and I don't know how he's been training for this, after a death in the family.

I've fancied Burns from the beginning and the weigh-in will tell me how much to put on (unless anyone can make a convincing case for Mitchell?).

`I dont rate Burns' `I dont rate Bellew'.

Uttterly clueless. I hope you dont give anyone boxing betting advice.

Burns and Bellew are both beautiful classical, stylish boxers. They train like fuuuccckkkkkk and live the life.

They both have fantastic jabs which they use as offensive and defensive weapons and can adapt to any opposition.

Burns is clearly an elite lighweight boxer and Bellew proved v Cleverley he is world class. They are both still improving.

`Dont rate them':

Report Duketurtle September 23, 2012 12:03 AM BST
I still can't have Burns. Have i got a mental block, am I in denial?

Could be, but my gut feeling is that he beat a fragile Mitchell tonight and still hasn't done anything to signify he's an outstanding elite fighter. I find him wooden, i don't like his variety punch wise, don't like how he throws his shots and i think he's vulnerable against a decent puncher.

He was very effective defensively when closing up and blocking shots against Katsidis but there was absolutely nothing in Mick's punches, he was gassed power wise from the 2nd round and anyone who caught Katsidis next fight, a loss to a below average african lad will know that Burns fought dead man walking.

Burns didn't look a defensive mastermind against Martinez, he hung on several times and i feel will be caught wanting against any world class oppo in their prime over the next 12 months. It was impressive tonight, real good job but if he wants to be considered elite he has to go in with a fighter who has absolutely no doubts surrounding him. He doesn't even have to win, if he's competitive with a Broner, De Marco even Abril I'd say I've had Burns wrong, hes earnt his stripes. Talk of being elite and 'one of the great british fighters' are really baffling me.
Report alabaster crashes down September 23, 2012 12:08 AM BST
I backed it and put it up beforehand, but really does it matter? No need for all the back biting is there, we all get it right and wrong at different times...the more opinions the better as far as I'm concerned, decent bit of discussion on here can often be very valuable in forcing you to look at things from a different perspective. Be a shame if we lost that.
Report Duketurtle September 23, 2012 12:14 AM BST
I had a small double on perez and mitchell but I totally agreed with Paul Smith's comments at the end of the fight when he basically said no method of victory result would have been a suprise tonight.

It's not a new, post Burns fight discussion whether Mitchell's punch resistance has gone. We've spoke about it on here for years and this was the first proper fight since the brutal Murray tear up. People have reacted like Burns has stopped Juan Manuel Marquez early. He really hasn't.
Report Kriskin September 23, 2012 12:18 AM BST
Duke - very good posts.  I don't think most people on here are saying Ricky is Top class but I feel he does not get the respect from certain corners within the game
Report MullahOmar September 23, 2012 12:19 AM BST
Agree, just annoyed when you hear the words `I dont rate'.

Could you imagine sj meeting Burns in bar and saying `I dont rate you at boxing'. It is beyond ridiculous.

Duke fair comments and he has some way to become a `great british fighter'.
I think he is elite level at lightweight now, in that I mean in top 3, with Broner/De Marco.
Report Geesyerdosh September 23, 2012 12:23 AM BST
I don't think anyone is saying he's ring magazine No.1

But now its Martinez had his worse night/Katsidis was gone/Mitchell was finished???

I believe he's somewhere in between but whatever you think he deserves massive credit for where he's come from and what he's achieved.
Report Shrewd_dude September 23, 2012 1:07 AM BST
DT how you putting that down to Mitchell"s punch resistance gone? When did he have any? He's 27.

He never had any in the first place when he wasn't fighting diddies and was now fighting a world class fighter.

Burns might not be top class but he has proved much more in his fights than Mitchell who has done **** all his entire career.

a forum with people forming different opinions and debating them .......remarkable as this happened before

wot i dont think is neccessarily helpful is HYPE cos it was hype that made Camelot a 2/5 shot and it was hype that sayed the titanic could not be sunk

i have never seen SJs posts before but alls he seems to be saying from what little i can see is that burns wasnt an attractive bet BEFORE the match at 8/11. I have watched virtually every fight of his pro career and am a big fan but i didnt back him.

The boxing forum is sparse enough as it is without hounding out someone that puts up a reasoned argument just cos it turns out to be wrong.....

I am still struggling to put last nights match into context tbh as emotions were running high at chateaux Pickens but I dont believe that we have seen the best from Burns. I am sure now he is entering his peak age and he can get better still as he will need to,i do not agree that he is wooden as his foot work seems good his jab looks rock solid andhe does not seem to be a fud like Amir who wants to go rushing in  and squaring up to sluggers, i like the way he took his time to settle then when he was sure he slowly cranked it up, but I do not know if this will be good enough against your top tier. Lets hope FW doesnt wrap him in cotton wool and we get the chance to find out, what I do know is that following him will be a lot more conducive than watching the likes of Khan, Audley and Haye. Anyway I fancy a trip to Vegas in march gets too hot for my me after then...

i think Burns is genuine world class,he has a fantastic jab and is always supremely fit.In hindsight he was a great bet against Mitchell.I think a mixture of his lifestyle plus the Katsidis loss has finished Mitchell!Lets face it even though he beat Murray last year ,there were times in that fight he was wobbled a bit! Its all about opinions and i for one think Burns can move up to the elite class,he showed when he fought Katsidis that he can box on the end of his jab to good effect and i hope he goes on to bigger and better things!

Report sj September 23, 2012 4:15 PM BST
I'd get Vasquez over. Unification and I think Burns could beat him
Report Duketurtle September 23, 2012 4:37 PM BST
Interesting that it's taken so long for Warren to come up in the post fight discussion. For me his matchmaking has been the most significant factor in Burns' title defence run, not Rickys ability/improvement.

I'm not saying Warren has selected bums (although Cook, Evensen and Layrea were terrible opposition) but he has shown a real skill of picking fighters that have looked dangerous and exciting but have turned out to be past it. I don't think this is an accident, more impressive promotional steering from Frank.

How you can talk elite, which means pound for pound not just divisional,on the back of the last couple of years is beyond me. The Martinez fight was a ding dong rollercoaster ride, a fantastic upset. Where have the world-class performances/opposition been since then? If he climbs in with the lads from the division mentioned above and performs well I'll be happy to hold my hands up but to demand more respect for Burns at the moment is puzzling. He's got some way to go before being regarded as a great champion, elite status is miles away imo.
Report sj September 23, 2012 4:59 PM BST

I don't think many are going to argue that the rickster will ever be p4p material to be honest, but he does deserve respect as one of the few genuine world class fighters we've got at the moment. I'd give him a great chance against Broner personally and probably get a decent price aswell.
Report Duketurtle September 23, 2012 5:54 PM BST
You'd get an outstanding price from where I'm sitting!
Report Slim Pickens September 23, 2012 6:03 PM BST
warren does that though he is the master at squeezing every last dollar out of a fighter, not that its been good for the game mind or even some of his fighters, it was around about this sort of break through time both hatton and khan dumped him. I am not sure what will happen with burns but to me it would be great if he got on the boat and went to a top yank gym, cos unlike amir he would listen and learn and unlike hatton he lives the life and isnt gonna get distracted.

I think Duketurtle is being pretty harsh with his wooden comments tbh and he can only beat whats in front of him which nobody is denying wasnt impressive last night but he is far from the finished article

Sadly I don't think we'll get a chance to see Burns unifying titles or fighting the likes of Broner.

He's too nice a lad in some ways he'll let Warren do what he likes and with that crowd yesterday all Frank will be interested in is lots of paydays.

Home defences against the easiest opponent Warren can find for the next couple of years Sad
Report owl4life September 23, 2012 11:51 PM BST

Mitchell will have to rebuild now, could he move to 140? Him vs McCloskey would be a good euro level scrap.
