And breaks the record for a mare which was held by Cheveley Park winner Magical Romance in 2006. If you have just splashed out 4.7m for a mare (and the opportunity cost of that money that goes with it) it may be worth looking away now:

DUAL Group 1 winner Immortal Verse broke the European record price for a broodmare sold at public auction when selling to Coolmore for 4,700,000gns at Tattersalls in Newmarket on Tuesday.
The previous record of 4,600,000gns was set in 2006 when Cheveley Park Stakes winner Magical Romance sold to James Wigan, owner-breeder of Breeders' Cup heroine Dank.
Seven years later it was Wigan who opened the bidding for Immortal Verse - offered in foal to leading sire Dansili - at 2,000,000gns, with interest from US celebrity chef and racehorse owner Bobby Flay pushing the bidding to the 4,000,000gns mark before BBA Ireland's Adrian Nicoll joined the fray on behalf of Coolmore, emerging victorious at 4,700,000gns.
"She's a queen," said Nicoll. "It was probably top whack for her but she's a great physical and a great racehorse."
A daughter of Pivotal, who has gained several Group wins as a damsire this year, Immortal Verse won the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and claimed the notable scalp of Goldikova in the Prix Jacques le Marois.
Offered by Luke Lillingston's Mount Coote Stud on behalf of her new owners Merriebelle Stables - who bought her as part of the Kilfrush Stud stock earlier this year - the five-year-old also landed the Group 2 Prix Sandringham for trainer Robert Collet, later finishing third to Frankel in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
The record-breaking sale came just 24 hours after dual Oaks winner Dancing Rain fetched 4,000,000gns, sold in foal to the champion racehorse himself.

This horse was bought by BBA Ireland. Can someone please explain why BBA Ireland bought this horse on behalf of Coolmore? Surely they have several of their own agents/associates out there who were capable of bidding on this potential broodmare? At 5% commission BBA Ireland are making over €200K. Nice work if you can get it. It just doesn't sound right to me.

Maybe they were fed up of the Qatar boys bidding up everything that they were bidding on. Commissioning BBA and Stephen Hillen (roshdu queen) to bid on their behalf ensured anonymity.
