Posted this on the horse forum but it got no replies.

They made a big thing today on the tv at Brighton about Speedfit Boy being a lead horse at home for the better animals. Considering there is anecdotal evidence that always leading work sours some horses (especially if come race day they are being held up rather than being ridden from the front) do you get a discount on training fees?

All horses, whether a Group performer or a 60 rated maiden cost the same to keep in training. Why should they get a different training schedule?

Surely there is a better, more efficient way of getting all the horses in a yard fit and ready to run to there absolute optimum on race day. I know if I owned a 60 rated maiden I would not want to be paying for my horse to be basically an equine personal trainer/wind shield for the stable stars.

Not sure the example you give is the best one because that horse is owned by John Guest who has better horses at GM's yard, and perhaps he doesn't mind if the one with the least ability is used as a lead horse for the others.

And perhaps it's the same at other yards where owners don't mind having their lesser-lights used as lead horses, if they have better horses in the stable?

GM has probably been happy to discuss the horse's training because the owner knows about it, but if it goes on in yards where an owner has just the one moderate horse, I reckon neither you or the owner will get to find out about it!
