Pierro,  sold by Darley at the 2011 National Weanling sale for $110,000, has been purchased by Coolmore, to join their Australian stallion roster.

An error of monumental proportions, you would have to think, considering Darley has the biggest racing stable in Australia.

Dream Ahead also sold as a yearling. You cant get it right every time though can you ?

I can't!

My point is, Darley have the biggest racing operation in Australia, and try over 200 yearlings each year, the vast majority of these are homebreds.  Why would you want to be selling one as as a weanling ? Obviously someone didn't think much of the colt.

At his weanling price he obviously wasn't a horrible specimen but the decision was taken to cull all the same.

When you run the biggest operation there is it's pretty likely that it's always in danger of becoming unwieldy and there should be plenty of culling going on at all times.

This one got away and I am sure they will be the first to admit that it will happen again in the future too.

Keeping the misjudgements to a minimum is all any of us can hope for Cry

I can see your point about needing a culling program.

It was an interesting purchase by Coolmore, as Pierro is free of Danehill. I'm guessing they are hoping for another Fastnet Rock and the opportunity to shuttle him, if he proves successful.

Castiron, I am sure they do hope that Pierro proves so great that they can shuttle him. I think his damline is plenty recognisable to us up here. It will be interesting to see how much patronage Coolmore mares give him, but he seems most likely to me to be a case of offering a Danehill outcross for the use of their their clients.

One things for sure, they may be hoping  for a shuttle job but realistically only in their dreams. We ain't gonna want a son of Lohnro up here anytime soon!

I can understand that, but Lonhro is every bit as good a sire as Exceed And Excel.

The strange thing is Lonhro would have done pretty well in Europe. His progeny are very sound,  they give their best all the time and they love wet tracks.

Well I'm all for upping the soundness and raceability of the tribe Castiron. Perhaps a time might come when we have to concentrate more fully on that aspect than is currently the case and look outside the box a little like you suggest.

Pot M

Darley have shuttled him to the USA for the past two seasons and have heavily promoted him on the basis of his soundness. Not many stallions race until they are six, have a 34 start career and win ten group 1s.

His promo on their US website is well worth a look.

If Pierro did shuttle to Europe I would have to look at him. Pedigree looks like a potent broodmare sire in the making in a precocious package.

Err, having just seen the Aussie fee for him it might be a pool I can't paddle in...

MAKFI is a worse case of one getting through the net but these things will always happen. If Darley wanted him badly enough they would have gone back in and bought him.
