We're all probably familiar with the foal share agreement between Juddmonte and Coolmore, but I didn't realise that Kind was one of ten mares originally due to visit Sadler's Wells. When he became ill, Juddmonte agreed to switch those ten mares to the best two stallions available, which at that time were Montjeu and Galileo. Phillip Mitchell is quoted as saying "If I'm honest, she would probably never have visited Galileo unless she was part of that package". When it comes to deciding who chooses the resultant foals of those mares, both Coolmore and Juddmonte independently grade the ten foals and on an alternate picks basis, select their five. That year, it was Juddmonte's turn to have first pick and chose the Galileo - Kind colt whom they had listed as their number one choice.
The rest, as they say, is history but we should be thankful that we didn't end up with another Bullet Train.........
There is such a lot of 'happenstance' in this game JM is there not. An interesting tale for sure.
Mind you as a mare's 2nd foal is statistically her best then perhaps Frankel would have come along even if Kind had visited Three Valleys that year
Sadlers might have resulted in a much improved Bullet Yrain second time round though. . .

No, it's true. Bold Ruler at that time didn't really cover many outside mares, he was used mainly by the Phipps family on their own broodmare band. But if they accepted an outside mare, they would claim one of two foals produced by the mare he bred in successive seasons. Ogden Phipps won the toss of a coin and chose the weanling filly out of Somethingroyal, whilst Penny Chenery was left with the unborn foal the mare was carrying, who turned out to be Secretariat. Just for the record, the weanling filly that Phipps picked was named The Bride and was unplaced in all of her six starts. I think!
