To much cloak and dagger give us mere mortals some idea Tongue Out
Report Posh Paddy November 30, 2012 1:48 PM GMT
You are wasting your time jmc27, to disclose the details would reveal the identity of PotM and given his rather candid views on practices and personel within the industry it would possibly make his life more difficult if those involved knew exactly who it was that was saying these things.

Anonimity is key to the forum, if it wasn't, all we'd get is sycophantic guff.

If you are really determined to find out what PD is going on about then start going back through every post on the forum on every subject and like a giant jigsaw puzzle you will eventually come up with a picture, assuming you put it together correctly.

I myself have no particular axe to grind or am of any significance to the industry or the world so my anonimity is not important (and so I can continue to talk complete guff) but to other it is.

Anyway well done PotM on your sales of some horse to somebody for some money.....Grin

Thank you very much lingbleed and Posh Paddy. I am keen to keep anonymity as much as possible. As you say, it helps if we don't have to spend too much time on wondering what we should and shouldn't say on here. It would certainly all become a bit saccharine on here if so.

Prima Donna though does have the key to the cabinet, so I have to trust his discretion - much as he enjoys pushing it!

Thanks though Prima, it was a good day at the office! The one nom. was a leftover that i had no choice but to use as I was short of funds. It is not my favourite territory that period in a stallion's career but I got away with it proper. I thought the other you refer to was slightly faultable but seems that no one else agreed with me. Time soon will come when it is the other way round again. As you might of surmised elsewhere i am really pleased to have got a payday out of hitherto a very expensive excersise.
You don't seem to worried about my other lots Wink so i shan't go into them either!

Whilst 2 of the more prominent posters are on here, are there any circumstances where youd breed off a 3yo filly.  I bought one to race next year but she has a problem so i wondered if breeders would consider the possibility of not racing and sending her straight to stud.  Im happy to wait to let her mature as well, asked a few people and as in all aspects of racing i get different answers so i fancied a few more.

Well done at the sales as well btw.  I nearly missed my manners there.  Cheers
Report potentialmillionaire November 30, 2012 9:55 PM GMT
Thanks Koo. I would have few qualms about breeding from a 3yo filly but I have no experience of doing so successfully.
I would want to be happy the filly was mature enough and I would imagine a mental maturity was perhaps important as I am not sure a still silly 4yo was a great recipe for a safe and well adjusted foal!

You can always trust my discretion Pot M,I know full well just how important keeping ones identity on here is!And you are right I do have the key to your cabinet too.
Yes I did get all of your looked atWinkhow could I not? They too were nice sorts.Another poster on here had a foal for sale.....yes truehoncho you and I got my guy to have a look, were you happy enough with the result? There you were hiding right down tucked into a cornerWhoops

Koo....As regards covering a 3 y'old filly why not?If she has a page that's good enough and she's mature then go for it,I've done it before with mixed results with conception. What I possibly would suggest if you are in doubt is have your vet examine her internally then you will know if conception is likely or not,and Pot M's point above about mental maturity is a factor in your decision

I think also that we are represented on here at the sales today perhaps aswell! Hope that goes well. Though not too well as I'm hoping for top slot Laugh

I can't narrow truehonch's presence down completely I'm afraid, so your secrets safe from me t.h.!

OK, here's my view, which probably won't be popular but, as a relative newcomer, it's how I view this!

I totally understand why anyone would like to retain their privacy - that's not an issue for me. However, what I do find really irritating are posts that are, basically, better suited to being private messages rather than public topics. I'd love to congratulate Potential Millionnaire on a great sale but, as I don't know what the sale was, how much, what a good punt or not it was, then my congrats would be somewhat hollow and without foundation. I've also been breeding commercially for more years than I care to remember, would probably count as friends some folk others on here wouldn't and vice versa. So what ? You pays your money and makes your choice! I've had some pretty spectacular returns and more godawful dire ones.

I also had a foal for sale on Wednesday - he was the HELLVELYN ex SONGSHEET so that blows my cover but so what ? He made very decent money for virtually no input at all, so I couldn't be happier! Especially as I bought his dam for £5k 16 years ago, she won a race for me, gave me huge pleasure, bred me a Royal Ascot winner, so achieving one goal I really wanted, she is the funniest mare going, pulls evil faces and threatens everyone but never does a thing and fortunately has bred way above her own ability in some of her offspring. How lucky am I ?
Report potentialmillionaire December 3, 2012 10:04 PM GMT
Sorry to miff you off WinningColors, but delighted to hear of your sale. There were certainly some highlights with Hellvelyn and I could see him continuing to build up a head of steam.
You are undoubtedly very lucky with the fun you have had with Songsheet, as you say dire results are only ever a heartbeat away.
I feel I have had a good run and I am battening the hatches down now for a run of crooked fillies!

wd winningcolours on your foal, i congratulated potm on another thread for his results, as far as keeping his identity private thats his choice, although its a pity really, i have always wanted to breed thoroughbreds, been my ambition from an early age, i now find myself able to move forward on that, but would like to meet likeminded people and learn more about it, people like potm would be interesting to study and learn from as not too far from me, even though i dont know his identityWink

Winningcolours, well done for the sale of your Hellvelyn foal.As regards keeping identity's private on this forum perhaps its done because if certain posters are known to be in anyway connected to larger well known established organisations within the industry it might then be taken that the poster then echo's the thoughts and views of that organisation, not the case at all. What always needs to be remembered on here is views expressed are just a purely personal opinion and should be taken as nothing more.
You need to be reminded this is a public forum that any of us can post what we like when we like.If I want to post to Pot M to congratulate him on his sale then that's entirely up to me,he and I know who each other is but we never name names we both respect each others identity.Sorry if my original post was 'really irritating' to you but frankly I don't care.......life's a bitch winningcolours!Plain
Report WinningColors December 4, 2012 2:08 PM GMT
I don't need any reminder about how forum's work, Prima Donna - been using them since the inception of the internet and well aware how they operate. Of course you can congratulate anyone you like but I can equally post that I find such posts something of an irrelevance - it's not obvious from the topic heading that this is a private matter - why not label it so and then I don't need to waste my time reading it.

And similarly, apologies if you don't like the above but, as you so correctly point out, PD, life is indeed a bitch !

However, as I am no bitch in a manger, very well done on whatever the sale was PM - those moments are indeed fleeting and great to enjoy when they appear.

Cunningplan - I've always been incredibly lucky in finding there are many folk out there who are very helpful when starting out in breeding animals - be they cattle, dogs or neds! Most folk are incredibly generous with their knowledge and it's those that freely inform with regard to disasters as well successes that genuinely have a desire to improve their own stock and the breed in general if they can.

Having been near the top of the game in breeding/working a gundog breed, had some great touches with selling foals and yearlings (have not been just confined to the one mare.....) and latterly very  successful in cattle breeding as well, I am more grateful than I can say to a few folk who have given advice without personal gain being totally at the top of their agenda. One thing is true, though - you're either a stockman or you're not - that's a fact in my opinion and if you don't think you have that attribute, maybe best left well alone as you'll handle far more downs than ups around stock of whatever species!

WinningColors I am not going to get into an argument with you over this. Those sort of petty rows belong on *other* horse forums. B&B has always been a harmonious sort of place, people can hold differing views and voice them strongly ( I am a prime culprit of that!Devil) but largely we are singing from the same songsheet (see what I did there Wink ) I did not label my topic as private, because it wasn't. Posh Paddy knows the spirit in which the topic was posted "Anyway well done PotM on your sales of some horse to somebody for some money....." So did jmc27 "To much cloak and dagger give us mere mortals some ideaTongue Out " perhaps as you are new to the forum you are just a little out of the loop as far these things go. It is almost a running joke that we say things that are clothed in hints and riddles. Sometimes I am left scratching my head scrabbling for the true meaning of posts. That's half the fun!

I think the points you have made in your final paragraph are spot on. On the whole people in this industry are helpful, lets face it we all know how easily the best laid plans can come crashing down, but you are right when you mention those whose eye is only on making a quick buck. Your point about stock is also very true. As a breeder of prize cattle myself there is much crossover from the equine side, not least the old adage 'You have livestock, you have deadstock'! I have had cause to utter that myself this last week, we had a promising young mare who has produced two very nice foals for us after a moderately successful career on the track. She is from one of the hottest families of the moment and held lots of potential. But she injured her hind leg so badly that we had no option but to destroy her. That's how it goes with horses isn't it.....Shocked
Report potentialmillionaire December 4, 2012 6:30 PM GMT
Blimey Prima, sorry about your mare. I know you don't feel the need to get into a big sympathy thing on here I wouldn't either. It's a bit difficult to just ignore it though too!

Keep asking the questions cunning, no one will intentionally do anything but give you helpful advice. It is a hell of a big learning curve though!

Hello all,

well done everyone on your sales. I saw your foal WinningColors and he was worth every penny. I looked at all the Hellvelyn's with Trickledown and yours was the best. He really stamps his stock and had a great sale. I am using him next year even though he is in his 3rd season.

You have me at a disadvantage PD. I am happy that I moved him on thats for sure, whether he was worth more or less I don't know. It was the first foal I've bred and he did make a small profit (if you bill my time at 25p an hour, which some would say is overpaying me!!!). I should probably ask your man how I did!
Report WinningColors December 5, 2012 9:55 PM GMT
Thanks Truehoncho - glad you liked him. Hope he makes a profit next year.  Love the 25p / hour comment - couldn't agree more! Laughable really but let's face it, we all do it for that one glorious moment be it a cracking sale or a fabulous win.

Songy's in foal to HELLVELYN again - think this will be her last and for once, I am hoping for a filly - after a safe delivery for them both, naturally.

Really sorry too about your young mare, PD. -
