Hope the above link works - it's to a topic on the Bloodstock Section of the RP about Prof Twink Allen promoting the use of embryo transfer and whether or not that it should become 'legal'.
From what I have always been told by our ET technicians (I have a herd of pedigree cattle and ET work is both widely accepted and a practical way to expand your herd by obtaining superior genetics more cheaply), unlike cattle where flushes of up to 40+ fertilised embryos can occur, mares rarely flush more than two, so I'm not quite sure why the prospect of ET work has everyone rushing about wringing their hands? Just because you get embryos, does not mean you will get foals, as getting embryos to 'stick' in the recipient is by no means easy in cattle, let alone mares! Plus, assuming the idea is to keep a top class mare racing while harvesting embryos, you would only be able to do that while she wasn't racing, as super ovulation plays havoc with their metabolism for short periods while being injected with folotropin.
But assuming the technicians get better at harvesting more embryos (as I am not sur why else Prof Allen is getting so excited about it), what does The Panel think about the concept ?
