One mare has aleady been discussed at length on this forum. Any opinions on a good buy that may come in at under £10k?

I'm suprised this forum hasn't discussed this sale more.

Well done for starting a dedicated thread truehoncho. I feel sure it will raise a bit of traffic now. Not from me quite yet though as I am very late in getting round to the catalogue. I'll pitch in though as I intend to be there!

Quick flick through first 100 lots - 62, 69, 71 (stamina laden?), 78, 83, 86.  No idea what they'd go for but those are my choice so far!  Feel free to unpick at will!!!

Following on from the other thread on the sale. Would you be more inclined to take a chance on an average/poor looking mare from a family that otherwise seems to throw very good looking individuals in the hope that to some extent, with the right cover, the mare maybe somewhat more likely than most of similar looks to revert to 'type' for the family?
Report truehoncho July 3, 2012 7:55 PM BST
I liked the the look of 62 Lairy Mary, I dont know it her page will improve much over time but a nice colt out of her would surely make a profit. How would you value her?

Ruffian, you heve just concisely asked the question that I fumbled about with. I think I am on the nice family, compromise a bit on looks side.
Report potentialmillionaire July 3, 2012 8:25 PM BST
I don't think 62 is without merit.

As you say truehonch the family looks a bit static right now.

But Wink if your mare produces a great foal then it is plenty of page to sell off.

But Wink if your mare doesn't produce a great foal than a hot page is only of pretty limited use.

We're looking for a combination of a page on the up AND a great looking colt to sell but realistically how often do the two fall in your lap?

I think that as we wander round Park Paddocks catalogue in hand, we get to ask ourselves fewer and fewer questions as only the horrible ever seem to be affordable, and I for one head back down the road empty handed!!

Just something to think about here.A small time breeder friend of mine bought himself a filly out of training with the plan of it becoming a BM.She was the first daughter out of a GR winning mare from a strong family,on paper she looked a sound prospect. He was so pleased with his new purchase inviting me over to see the filly, one look sent alarm bells ringing she was not as bad as lot 14 from Tatts Feb sale but all the same dire!In short she never so much as bred a runner let alone a winner, all her foals were conformationally poor specimens that disappointed in the sale ring.
Always when selecting poss' mares remember conformation is the key, that's not to say the page is unimportant of course it is,but don't hold too much faith in the pedigree if she's horrible.Happy

Although there is no money in the kitty, I'm going to struggle to get there, and it's unlikely I'll have won the lottery by then, I still can't bring myself to show my cards just in case. Its all on paper so far though.
Report yer ma July 3, 2012 11:24 PM BST
The yang to that ying of course is that incorrect mares produce nice horses all the time - imo wonky front legs are the best chance to take (if you swim at the level where compromise is necessary).

I'm probably going so not giving away much I'm afraid - business is business ;)  Have a nice Shadwell family so 62 not for me. 71 & 86 are withdrawn.  78 is a no bid / £2k horse, 69 should be a £20k+ horse and a bit strange to be selling it so alarm bells. 83 I cant have for all sorts of reasons starting with my fences are damaged enough.  I like 90 - I assume it is conformationally perfect ;0?

On the subject of apparent bargains maybe its Deauville we need to look - today £3k for 2yo daughter of Ravens Pass out of a half sister to Stormy River (Saga River)....a Plantation stud purchase for £340k.  Fire sale or 3 legs?
Report potentialmillionaire July 4, 2012 5:13 PM BST
What on earth do we make of Lot 60.

A $275k foal she would have been a fish out of water in Chantilly and she's a fish out of water at Tatts July too.

Doe she sell quite well back across the Atlantic or does she mooch round the ring for tuppence ha'penny????
Report yer ma July 4, 2012 8:26 PM BST
After my day in the torrential rain and mud and then extracating horse from fence - I'll take her over to kentucky (even if the boss/Mrs YM doesnt want to go).
Report potentialmillionaire July 4, 2012 8:48 PM BST
You need to get a retractable roof for your place yer ma, I saw one on the telly the other day with some guys whacking a ball about with a snow shoe underneath. I've got one on order. . .

Does your fencicated hoss live to tell the tale?
Report yer ma July 4, 2012 9:23 PM BST
Next few days will tell if the joint capsule is intact otherwise game is a bogey.  Not a 'stud' horse but grim all the same.
Report Prima Donna July 4, 2012 9:30 PM BST
Sorry to hear that, hope the horse makes a recovery. They do this sort of thing don't they, bloody horses!
Report potentialmillionaire July 4, 2012 9:55 PM BST
Yes yer ma good luck with that. I had a minor crisis last week with a foal who was so lame he had moved into 3 leg mode. Given the weather i 'knew' it was an abcess but no one could find it and I ended up taking him and the mare in to have a big xray job.
Well at least I know he has feet and joints that x-ray wellCry

Abcess now out too, so I'm hoping that (eventual) good fortune heads your way too yer ma.
Report Lairy Mary July 4, 2012 10:20 PM BST
Don't you just love horses!  I lost a filly a couple of years ago with what started out as pus in the foot.  It tracked quickly up the leg and within days I had hopping animal.  Took her to vet clinic but her joint was too badly infected and had started to seize up.  I was devastated and beat myself up over it only to be told by the vet, he had lost his own horse only 6 weeks earlier exactly the same and there is a window of about 48 hours when if you don't get the anti-biotics in, nothing will work.  Oddly, I heard of about 6 horses locally all suffering the same fate that summer over 3 months so whether there was a virulent bacteria around, I don't know.  Now I take no chances and its strep & pen in asap.  Over cautious but I've become neurotic!

I have also been in same situ as you, PM on more than one occasion!!  Horse swears blind it has a fracture yet you are convinced it is pus.  The farrier digs around - nothing.  Has to have an xray, then the vet digs deeper and bingo!  A bill for an xray and all it needed was some animalintex!
Report potentialmillionaire July 4, 2012 10:37 PM BST
Praise the lord I didn't hear that tale whilst I was fretting Lairy M !
Report Lairy Mary July 4, 2012 10:51 PM BST
Interesting comments!  I see what you mean, YerMan on 83 - Benny the Dip on a Rahy mare could be pretty neurotic!  Not sure why you don't like 78 nthough?  Dansili on Gone West on The Minstrel?  G1 1st dam?  OK 3 Valleys is a bit of a let down but The Nile may have been his saviour!:(

OK - next batch!
115, 116, 121 (fancy Singspiel as a BM sire)
122 (although its got to make a fair bit hasn't it? esp with dam having New Approach colt!)
124,134,136,140, 168, 184

Oh don't worry, PM, I wouldn't have added it had you not mentionned the all-clear!  But the penicillin does live in the fridge now!Wink
Report proxygene July 7, 2012 11:22 PM BST
lot 121 would have been my top pick too.
Report truehoncho July 8, 2012 9:51 PM BST
250, 301, and 364. A trio of nice Dubai Destinations I think could go under £10k. Am I way off?

I know he's not the best stallion but I think he could do well as a broodmare sire.
Report Prima Donna July 8, 2012 10:23 PM BST
Take a look at lot 494.........a Van Nistelrooy filly, dam's a Black type own sister to Green Desert.Would make an interesting cross with Dubawi and sons of Oasis Dream and Invincible Spirit.See what you think.

If anyone sees them in person it might help me to understand why my estimates can be off the mark.
Report potentialmillionaire July 10, 2012 8:53 PM BST
Well proxy, it read quite nicely for a dodgy mixed sale and I have had a day there today working tomorrows lots. I'm afraid I have seen some nice lots there too. I wonder how it will pan out. I suspect some people with lesser lots will get a bit lost as there's a deal of choice. I'll let you know about your above lots - after!
Report proxygene July 10, 2012 9:17 PM BST
Thanks, 3 to move on before I dare broach the subject of restocking.

I'm not going anymore - too wet at home and too much to do I'm afraid.  To answer the original question from Truehoncho, I'd be hoping to get one of these for

forum acting up I see....not retyping my list & expectations...if I had to take a cheap mare to make money it would be 32. A filly 142 or 174 but they could make plenty if nice.
Report potentialmillionaire July 11, 2012 9:59 PM BST
Lots mentioned above - and seen by little me!
62 likeable very CC and very big!
90 correct, walks, sane, had a fracture, perhaps not much talent.
60 plain solid type easy to see why she was expensive before but also easy to see why she wasn't a racehorse too.
136 nice typical example of the sire
250 never anyone with it but offset toed in (over the door)!!
174 Cribber Weaver. Pretty, light sort of mare. Toed out off, walked.
142 Very lengthy walked toes out. OK
Report yer ma July 11, 2012 10:26 PM BST
Pretty much went as I thought but glad I didnt go as 'mine' all too expensive.  £21k Lot 32..better be a nice colt foal.  Two fillies enough money given all the risk / effort & expense of covering.  97/98 seemed strangely cheap.  I'd probably have stuck my hand up for 89.
