Not sure if its been discussed on here, but what do the forumites think of artificial insemination for thoroughbreds
Given the dearth of cheap choices this season, and the less travel for the mare and foal, from a purely selfish point of view its been growing on me recently but do think overall/in the long term its not good for the breed or indeed the market
I don't know of anyone that thinks a stallion covering 200 mares is a good idea, except one, the owner of the stallion.
We have soundness issues in the breed already but at least a reproductively challenged unsound mare has to actually stand for the stallion. She would be more able to conceive regularly with AI perpetuating such faults.
We are not getting to grips with these issues and many others. I don't trust us as an industry to successfully police AI in the slightest.

ADDENDA! First sentence refers to the numbers a stallion could cover over and above 200 mares which is where we frequently and regrettably find ourselves now without AI.
