Has been a great servant to the industry & his yearling median was up to highest since 2007 but is it too late to go to him next year?

He will be 19 next year (20 when foals born) and this year has only one 2yo rated over 100 (saigon) and only 2 more achieving BHA 90+ & presumably same or declining quality to run over next two years given his age. His stats taken from the RP (below) dont stack up against his mid/low market/early speed rivals for his £9k fee

Will his lustre endure to foal sale dec 2013?

Definitely a good subject to visit Squidly.

I know it's a regular one for us, but there never seems to be a cut and dried answer. I always remember how convincing Prima Donna is in his forecasting doom and despair for those who stuck with the hardy annuals. In principle I agree with him, but the fact is that the above horses have had a pretty good time commercially this year ( Bertolini excepted perhaps).

I think the one thing I can say categorically is that there is NO way of calling the market in 2 years time for Royal Applause and the likes. Fashion is up and down like The Daily Mails moralising bullsh1t and I don't intend to try and second guess it.

I have used R A three times over the years and my best shot involved a small loss, the other two involved rather larger deficits. I certainly think you need to steer clear with a lighter type of mare.

Anyone else think people buying foals by Compton Place were paying yearling prices?

Can't agree with you there Prima me old mucker, I think they were paying a little over yearling prices!

I do think though that although by and large we are all in agreeement on here that young and sexy is the place to be, there has to be a section of buyers who like a proven speed sire and as there aren't that many of them to go round, it seems that maybe that's the reason they have held up so well this sales season.

Young, Sexy ... and cheap & future proof - its a tough guessing game
