A genuine question that I hope you can help me out with.
Obviously Coolmore are the biggest breeding operation in the world, but I find it confusing that very few (perhaps none?) of their high profile winners are listed on the RP website as bred either by Coolmore, Coolmore Ltd, Coolmore PLC etc.
e.g: St Nicholas Abbey - Barton Bloodstock & Villiers Synd Soldier of Fortune - Jim Bolger Maybe - Epona Bloodstock Ltd Dylan Thomas - Tower Bloodstock Cape Blanco - Jack Ronan And Des Vere Hunt Farm Co Fame & Glory - Ptarmigan Bloodstock And Miss K Rausing Peeping Fawn - Barnett Enterprises George Washington - Lael Stables Horatio Nelson - Beaverstone And Tower Bloodstock
....and the list goes on.
Is this because the business operates under a number of different names or are there other business reasons?
If someone could clarify, I would be grateful. Many thanks.
Aurelius, as you rightly summise, Coolmore do not post their own breds as 'Bred by Coolmore'
The ownership/business/tax affairs of the guys are endlessly complicated. Did you know for instance that there was a recent care home scandal in the UK, and lo, Coolmore partners turn out to be the majority shareholders in that?. Or perhaps you will more likely remember the Manchester Utd. business deal?
Anyway background, background, for sure, but it paints a picture of why it all gets so convoluted.
I get to recognise some of their nom de plumes but I am sure that others on here are far better connected and could tell you more, but remember a lot of their racing stock is purchased publicly and privately which feeds the racing machine with what they percieve to be the best credentialled stock and gives great PR for the stallions they stand.
Of the above I would say Dylan Thomas represents the most 'Coolmore Purebred' as Tower Bloodstock is all them. I am not sure whether Peeping Fawn is a pure product too but Horatio Nelson would be them and close associates the Nagles - Probably!
To be honest there is frequently a joint element with an outside breeder for the smarter breds as it takes some guts to write the cheque for a Galileo nomination!
How well their homebreds perform versus what they buy in would be fascinating to try and evaluate. . . a little project for you perhaps!
