However, Sakhee is a useful stallion for sure and quite an intriguing one in my eyes as given the right mare he can and does get horses with plenty of pace.
BUT, there sort of isn't much room at the inn for the inbetweeners. Classic types who can fire in the Group winners in England Ireland and France with consistency are the mega bucks territory.
Sharp types who get plenty of winners some with a bit of class and offering good action with their 2yo's are the other type of commercial certainty.

Sakhee therefore doesn't hit commercial therefore doesn't hit the heights at stud fee time.
Whilst it's loveley to think that they represent value for breeder who breeds to race, that breeder has to allow 40 grand to see his foal from conception to 3yo career and can therefore feel perhaps that he shouldn't need to scrape the 5k barrel bottom, even though it's not necessarily a bad place to look.

a few top horses may skew things but he is still above Oasis Dream and a whole host of middle to ordinary stallions, the latter who will have little likelihood of top class runners but will have less trouble selling

For the record, I've used him this year (late cover/best available) with a sprinting mare and hoping for one of his better ones!

is there no commercial angle for Sakhee at such a low fee (easily gettable for 3.5k). What about a mare from a sharp 2 year old family? would there be no profit in it at foal or yearling sales?

4 yearlings made over 15k last year didn't they truehoncho but sadly no foals made over 10k

Pretty difficult then right now and I suppose if he isn't trendy then a weakish mare isn't going to help the cause is it.

However if you have faith in the horse to come up with a domestic star in the year you sell then £3500 may look cheap. As we have said, he'd be a better shot to come up with a good runner than several that stand at higher fees.

The right young stallion, preferably 1st season, at 3500 is I'm afraid a better bet commercially though.

i know your right, its just something about breeding a thoroughbred by a true champion rather than an affordable(although admirable enough) sire that makes me wish it could be the right thing to do.

These scrubby cheapies, who lets face it are not going to become even 'good' sires in the vast majority of cases, well it really can break your heart to use them can't it.

I would try never to devise a mating on purely commercial grounds, but I'm not niaive enough to say it never happens. However, I hope that the choice when narrowed down to 2 or 3 similar types, is determined by the likeliest provider of a winner. I am stupid enough to try and 'make' my mares which is particularly foolhardy given the level at which I operate, but I wouldn't give up that goal altogether as trying to breed a good racehorse is likely to be the best route to  a commercially successful foal at the same time. (Not perhaps if you are starting with a nucleus of mares produced by the Hollingsworths or Her Maj. perhaps )

Sakhee has 23 wins in GB this year compared to 39 last year when he looked to be making progress. He still has time to match last years total but seems unlikely to beat it by much. His sire, Bahri, didn't make much impact, 17 wins in 2006 being his best effort. Interesting that Sakhee is doing well in other countries.
