I've been looking at the recent 7 horse listing from the AgaKhan private sale/photos/prices etc on their website was wondering if it had any value amongst them looking at breeding/conformation etc.

I think Kozama looks quite nice midas7.

However 16.2 as a 2yo suggests it is quite difficult to sharpen this family up and it's sure as hell quiet right now!

I can only see 6 for sale. I'm afraid I can't help you our on the confirmation side but breeding wise 4 of them look like they could make decent hurdlers.  Price wise they look very reasonable.  If they were sold as yearlings some of those pedigrees would have meant they would have made a lot more than they are asking now.

Get yourself a trusted vet and a good judge of a horse and go and have a look.  They'll be able to tell whether they are for sale because they are backward or knackered.  Hopefully the former and it's just a case of putting them in a field for a couple of years then off you go.

Cheers Gents,

Sorry Posh there was 7 initially but 1 must be sold, taking Pot M comments about the filly it must be quite unusual for the Aga Khan set up to sell fillies,I take PP's point about backward or knackered, only 1 has ran the 3yo in France, but I just thought that in the past this source has been quite a good one for sell ons

It has been a good source for sell ons I think mainly because the Aga Khan is interested in breeding winners, usually over a trip hence why they can make good dual purpose horses.  He's not interested in fashion, profit or precosity, he wants to win Derbys & Arcs and breeds accordingly.  You could do a lot worse.

I agree PP,for me as more a jumps man and as you say AK bloodlines being more middle distance orientated it makes perfect sense to study whats available from this source. Where's my chequebook?? The usual dilemna for someone like me,easy to buy but the monthly bills !!!

I've been looking into training costs myself recently and they are eye watering - £1.5K - £2K a month.  Best put a syndicate together.
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle August 6, 2011 10:00 PM BST
2k a month??

Who is charging that??

Henry Cecil??
Report potentialmillionaire August 6, 2011 10:03 PM BST
Plenty charge at that level ruby!
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle August 6, 2011 10:05 PM BST
2k sterling seems very high to me. Considering the prize money in England how can anyone small owner justify to himself 24k sterling a year.
Report Posh Paddy August 6, 2011 10:06 PM BST
2K all in - vets, farriers, entries, jockey fees, Paul Nicholl's training fees, etc - could be done.
Report rubyisgodinthesaddle August 6, 2011 10:08 PM BST
Paul Nicholls??[;)]

Hmm that is fair enough. At least he give your horse the best schooling any trainer can and he/she jump like a stag which gives a good chance of getting some of your outlay back.

The £2K is the upper limit, but it wouldn't take a huge leap of faith to get there.  You would also have to factor in the compulsory wind operation too if it goes to Nicholls [:x]

The BHA say you should allow £16K/yr, I've been quoted £18K and been told by owners that £20K is more like it.

Maybe those on here like Prima Donna & Midas7 could enlighten us as what it costs them?
Report Prima Donna August 6, 2011 10:52 PM BST
PP,Its true it costs a hell of a lot, depends who trains and where but 20k is nearer the mark with the bigger trainers but if you have plenty with each you can get a deal,I'd rather not total up how much it costs each month I leave that to my accountant but with over 60 in training you can begin to imagine why I don't really like to knowShocked

I am based near Musselburgh but have 2 trainers, one in the Borders and the other in the Carlisle area. When I see the costs for your Paul Nicholls @ approx 2k per month, I can guarantee I can get 2 trained for that figure. Before you southern based guys laugh, one of my fellows won 4 last season ended going from 98-136 OR. I agree with PP that syndication is the way forward and this is the route i try to go with.Affordable, good fun,and unlike some trainers I've had in the past you get listened to and have great involvement
