With no real stallions with speed on the coolmore roster at present,was the purchase of Canford cliffs a panic buy? he's not gonna make a great stallion,is he??id be amazed if he were any use at all when retired to the paddocks

You never know,but his pedigree is an odd one for them,and hardly distinguished for anybody. BUT he is a better racehorse than quite a few on their roster.

Why would he not make a great Stallion.
He is a incredible good 2yr old that progressed as a good 4yr old. He has speed in abundance and is a good solid looking horse. If priced correctly their will be loads of interest in him. |

A very handsome horse to my eye though, maybe the lads just liked him and decided to give an ear to their gut, it isn't an exact science I suppose.

I say he pulled a few muscles and thus running away from pain and hanging at Goodwood. Would need a good break of near 2 months and that prob is 2 late.
Very good career and hopefully his has a decent career at stud. |

Well well........I wonder if the Coolmore PR department have been working overtime on coming up with a feesable excuss for retirement,could it be the case that they know full well from what we have all seen good as CC is he is no match for Frankle.Getting Hannon's star miler stuffed again will do nothing to enhance his next job.Reading the press report sounds to me as though it was written by the same man that does Aiden's,and has Richard Hughes forgotten he rode Oasis Dream.......now he reckons CC is the fastest horse he has ever ridden.Just thinking back I remember Richard Hannon saying the next day "the horse is fine he's come out of the race sound and scoped clean this morning we are at a loss"...........imo the plain fact is he was well beaten and they were surprised just how easily.Hence this story today.

We have to give them the benefit of the doubt. If vets have found something on a scan, it would explain the hanging but I don't think it explains why he couldn't match Frankel for pace form 4 furlongs out. I think it is quite possible that the horse shows his "distress" at not being able to win by hanging as he did at Newbury last year. Horses do know when they are beaten and show a variety of reaction, tail swishing, ears back etc.

I wont say that he's as good as Frankel cause he's not, he is very close though to Frankel and thats why i like him. I wont be able to afford Frankel at stud but i will be able to use Canford Cliffs and i will use him next year for sure. He will be commercial and there will be plenty of buyers for ones out of him. I think he will be a nice addition to Coolmore not sure he'll be a huge success but there will be money to be made using him in his first year at stud.
I dont buy into the injury either |

You guys are incredibly Cynical,a Horse only hangs when he/she is feeling something or something is hurting them,although im sure you's would probably have us believe that coolmore told richard hughes, "if he's beaten make it look like he's hanging,at least we will have an excuse then"

pity he is retired so early in the season -brilliant horse- wish he had another shot at frankel ,but i do think he would have got an even bigger beating so they where lucky hes injured.he should be very popular at stud first season at least, as he s one good looking horse.stud fee 15K euro ?

Well imo the fact CC hung so much last time and the same thing at Newbury is nothing more than he was flat to the boards and can give no more,don't remember any talk of injury after Newbury,and agree with sammy next time even more of a beating.His new connections think its highly likely too.His new connections are masters with PR and marketing new stallions!

Smashing race horse anyone knocking what he did on the racecourse and that he ran up to his best lto is deluded. There was decent races left for him without taking on Frankel aswell

Canford Cliffs did exactly the same in The Greenham. Very good racehorse but not a superstar and the pedigree really isn`t great. But Coolmore will no doubt market him successfully and at least it makes a change from all the Northern Dancer line ones.

Not fooling anyone with this retirement. They're hoping Goldikova will advertise the Queen Anne form and he will be champion older miler. But he's not in Frankel's class and if they raced again there would be an even bigger drubbing - especially as they now know they can settle Frankel. CC brilliant miler at the HenrytheNavigator sort of level. But Frankel is something else - Newmarket and Goodwood the best mile performances since Zafonic's Guineas IMO.

I get a sense of typical Coolmore on this thread.
Its Coolmore horse, they paid their money for their share in him. Left him with Hannon and won 2Group 1's this year and beaten by a freak. He was obviously not 100% and any one with a half decent brain would retire him straight away. Right Decision for Coolmore , Right Decision more importantly for the horse. God luck to him in the future and I hope this Coolmore outcross investment turns out to be a successful one. |

I am not sure what Coolmore have paid for Canford Cliffs.
If they paid £399.99 I suspect they are quite happy right now. If on the other hand they paid £50 million then they've got a way to go. I really have no idea how he is going to go down in Australia and that ofcourse will affect the bottom line quite significantly and knock on obviously to what they need to recoup up here. He appears to be very smart looking and he lacks nothing in commercial aptitude so there's nothing not to like commercially in the early days. Long term, that page? Tagula? He deserves great support though whatever. We are all trying to breed exactly his like! |

I think I read somewhere that they paid £4 million for a 50% share. Looks a little hefty but if you take their share of the prize money and then take into account he will cover large books in both Hemispheres they'll break even in about 4 years. After that if he's a success they are quids in, if he's not they won't have lost anything.

This is the one sensible forum that Betfair has due mainly to the input from contributors such as Prima Donna,PotM,RVW,Sageform,Equimine and many others. I have several horses in training but know very little about the breeding side but due mainly to the aforementioned I enjoy there thoughts and aspirations for the future.So please refrain from the trash talk my friend and enjoy sane comments like everyone else. |

Not that I'm a great judge or anything, but he looks a real handsome horse to me and that gives him a chance by what most say on here. Frankel is some horse, but I'd have Canford down as the much better looker, just a guess, but I've a feeling Frankel might get stuffy, gross type of horse that take a while to get fit, someone described him as a bullock, a bit unfair I'd say, but I'd say his will take plenty of racing. I'm amazed by his stride because to my eye, he wouldn't look one with huge scope.
