I will start this with another article from the Thourghbred Times;
The five-day Royal Ascot meeting gets underway on June 14. The opening race will hopefully set the tone for what should be a fantastic festival of racing. The Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-G1) run over a mile will see the head-to-head battle of Goldikova (Ire) and Canford Cliffs.
Goldikova enters the race off the back of three straight Group or Grade 1 wins, which includes her third straight TVG Breeders Cup Mile (G1) score back in November at Churchill Downs. Canford Cliffs has won four straight Group 1 races in England and Ireland over the mile distance. This race promises to be a classic.
This article will highlight some juveniles by freshman sires that may have an impact on the earnings of your Freshman Sire Contest Stallion Barn. As a number of entries have not been determined for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, This Royal Ascot article will focus on the two-year-old races on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Coventry Stakes (Eng-G2) to be run over six furlongs was won in 2009 by the aforementioned Canford Cliffs. It was also a race won by Henrythenavigator in 2007, the year before his second-place finish in the Breeders Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
The most highly regarded entrant by a freshman sire in the Coventry Stakes is Mezmaar, a colt by Teofilo. Mezmaar was successful in his only start to date and had clearly built himself a good reputation on the gallops as he won at odds of 7-to-4.
From a personal standpoint I would love for Mezmaar to win as I have an attachment to the female side of the family from my time working in Ireland. Mezmaar’s second dam is My Branch, who was a stakes winner and Group 1 placed for owner Wafic Said. In my first year working at Kiltinan Castle Stud in Tipperary, Ireland, we had My Branch board with us and in 2001 she had a filly foal who would go on to be Bay Tree, who is the dam of Mezmaar.
I now feel that little bit older! The Windsor Castle Stakes, run over five furlongs, is a listed Race and concludes racing at Royal Ascot on opening day. This race will likely be where Wesley Ward’s Gentlemans Code poses a big threat.
I think this race is a good spot for Jack Who’s He. The son of Red Clubs featured in an earlier blog and his form of two wins in two starts over the distance of five furlongs would at least put him in with a good chance here. His sire, Red Clubs, won the Coventry Stakes as a two-year-old and his dam’s sire, Desert King, was a Group 1 winner over seven furlongs as a two-year-old, so his pedigree suggests speed and precociousness.
The Queen Mary Stakes (Eng-G2) run over five furlongs and restricted to fillies is the only two-year-old race on Wednesday. The Eoghan O’Neill trained Ruby’s Day would have a very good chance in this race from freshman sire Vital Equine.
A good yardstick to judge this filly by is the Ward trained Judy The Beauty. On her debut, Ruby’s Day was a neck second at Chantilly to Judy The Beauty who had the benefit of already visiting the racetrack and that was winning in impressive fashion at Keeneland Race Course. Ruby’s Day then beat two-time winner Family One in her second start.

Canford Cliffs is a VERY odd purchase for Coolmore. Notoriously nearly all their flat stallions in Ireland are from Northern Dancer lines. They have the odd one from Mr pospector and that`s it at the moment and I think it has been for years. By any standards Tagula is hardly fashionable. I can only assume they think Canford cliffs is very good indeed. Much beter than his sire. They will be desparate for him to beat Goldikova I would think and this early in the season is almost certainly the right time. I don`t know what to make of Cape blanco being in the race. I know his dam was a sprinter but last season he looked as though 10f was his minimum. Surely not in as a pacemaker ?

Taylor Stakes (G2) in North America. The following season, Urban Sea gained her first Group successes by taking the Prix Exbury (G3) and Prix Gontaut-Biron (G3), before causing a surprise in the autumn by winning the prestigious Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe (G1) by a neck from White Muzzle and Opera House. She was kept in training as a five-year-old in a bid to repeat this triumph, but after winning the Prix d'Harcourt (G2) and being placed in both Prix Ganay (G1) and Coronation Cup (G1), was retired due to a fetlock injury. Sire; (from wikipedia) Montjeu (born 1996) Champion colt and sire of champions.By Sadler's Wells ex Floripedes (Top Ville), Montjeu is a grandson of Northern Dancer.
Bred by Sir James Goldsmith, Montjeu was named for his owner's chateau outside Autun in France. Goldsmith died in 1997 before the colt began racing and his ownership went to a holding company owned by Laure Boulay de la Meurthe, mother of two of Goldsmith's children. After two starts, she sold the colt to Michael Tabor and Montjeu went on to be unbeaten as a two-year-old. Trained by John E. Hammond and ridden by Michael Kinane, at age three Montjeu won 1999's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the Irish Derby, the Prix du Jockey Club and was voted that year's Cartier Three-Year-Old European Champion Colt and World Champion.
Montjeu raced successfully at age four and earned honors as Champion older horse in Europe. In 2000, his victories included the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a performance that had to be seen to be believed in comfortably beating a high class field without breaking sweat, Tattersalls Gold Cup, and the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.
After 16 lifetime racing starts, a record of 11-2–0, and a Timeform rating of 137, Montjeu was retired to Coolmore Stud in Ireland 2001. He is already one of the top sires in the world and has produced several noted champions:
* Hurricane Run - No. 1 in the 2005 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings and winner of 2005 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe * Motivator - winner of the 2005 Epsom Derby * Scorpion - winner of the 2005 Grand Prix de Paris (in record time), the 2005 St. Leger Stakes, and the 2007 Coronation Cup * Authorized - winner of the 2007 Epsom Derby * Frozen Fire - winner of the 2008 Irish Derby * Montmartre - winner of the 2008 Grand Prix de Paris * Fame and Glory - winner of the 2009 Irish Derby, and 2010 Coronation Cup * Hurricane Fly - winner of the 2011 Champion Hurdle * Pour Moi - winner of the 2011 Epsom Derby

Natalma (fron wikipedia) (1957–1985) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse best known as the Blue Hen Dam of the most important sire, and sire of sires, of the 20th Century, Northern Dancer. Bred in Virginia, she was purchased by Canadian business mogul E. P. Taylor at the Saratoga, New York yearling sales for $35,000. Natalma won the 1959 Spinaway Stakes but was disqualified and set back to third place. While in training for the 1960 Kentucky Oaks she suffered a chipped bone in a knee and had to be retired from racing. Although late in the breeding season, she was sent to her owner's Windfields Farm in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada to be bred to Nearctic. That late pairing resulted in Northern Dancer being born on May 27, 1961. Natalma was bred to Nearctic two more times but a 1965 filly died as a yearling and their 1973 twins, a colt and a filly, both died. However, Natalma did produce stakes winners Native Victor, Regal Dancer and Born A Lady, as well as four other stakes placed horses and notable producers, Raise the Standard, Arctic Dancer (dam of La Prevoyante), and Spring Adieu (granddam of champion stallion Danehill)[b]
