Finally got around to reading this years Weatherbys Return on Mares. A couple of things really suprised me:

1) Arakan - 29 mares in 2009 and 95 in 2010. Dick Turpin aside, has he really done that much ?
2) Bushranger served 188 mares in his first year. An astonishing number in my eyes; considering we're being constantly told that breeders are siding with the 'proven'. There'll be a lot of Bushrangers at the sales over the next two years. Lets hope there's the demand at the level that he'll be operating at.
3) Footstepsinthesand served an incredible 201 mares. Formosina, Sent from Heaven and Steinbeck. That's it. Another Hawk Wing surely ?
4) Ravens Pass isn't providing particularly popular for a Darley-owned, Breeders Cup Classic winner. Only 59 mares last year...that's even lower than Strategic Prince (69).

Does anyone have any thoughts or my observations; or some observations of their own perhaps ?

Well Bushranger was guaranteed to cover a large book of mares given his connections his sire and being a group 1 winning two year old surely a good one has to come from all those foals prob wont find many in the early books at tatts or goffs.

Arakan is not one of favourites and i'm sure that Dick Turpin was a fluke i stand corrected though.

Footstepsinthesand is not commercial, has hardly any talented horses doesnt look like Formosina will train on and there from his best two books so far, so whats to come[:(]

Ravens Pass suffered an injury during the covering season thats why he didnt cover his large book of mares, he is very popular its a pity what happened him.

1, Not for me
2, Astonishing indeed. He looks smart in his photo, so I can believe why it happened. I'm glad it's not me because there will be 130+ making a loss.
3, Incredible indeed. I don't think he is as bad a stallion as we all believe - well not quite.
4, Ravens Pass has a dodgy back so doesn't cope too well hence the low numbers.

That's interesting news about Ravens Pass, and something I didn't know. A real shame for him. Is it a permanent condition or something that has been treated ?

Pastoral Pursuits stood out for me, 137 mares covered, 89 winning mares (65%).
Camacho covered quite a few - 113, being closely related to Showcasing must have done the trick.
