I don't usually look as hard at breeding of jump horses as I do flat ones but I have been struck this season by the success of Kings Theatre the leading sire on money won. Menorah, Cue Card and Voler de Vedette are 3 Champion hurdle candidates but many of his other high earners are chasers. His sire Sadlers Wells produced many top class hurdlers but few over fences so I am interested to see that Kings Theatre is doing better-probably because he got jumping mares as all of the 3 hurdlers above are out of. The likes of King Fontaine and Noble Alan would be even better if they learned to jump with more consistency while Captain Chris still has to prove himself to be top class over fences.

He's a quality stallion, even if like a lot of NH sires he's getting on a bit. Pay particular attention to his bumper winners because they transmit that success when they go hurdling. Equally, the good hurdlers seem to make decent chasers. And the interesting thing about him is that he gets his success from roughly half the numbers of mares that horses such as Presenting etc. get.

He is a failed flat sire who has done reasonably well with his bumper and hurdle progeny. His best progeny are from good NH families on the dam side. His fee is overpriced (9K)and he does'nt  consistantly breed top class chasers. He has bred only a handful of chasers with an OR of 140+ and he has covered a lot of good mares. All the Sadlers Wells NH stallions have a similar profile.
