I understand that she is a breeder not a buyer. Seems she sends her mares to the very best stallions including Coolmore. So is it that her mares are just irredemiably bad?

I think HRH is very much of the old school in so much as being your traditional owner breeder she  tended to have fairly stout families, racing has moved on a lot from the old day's.Stock bred in this way can and imo in her case get left behind, results speak for themselves in terms of success, but now she has John Warren as her bloodstock advisor things are looking better,it does take some time to get results as its not a quick fix. They are I understand buying mares from good current families and using stallions that you could realistically hope for better success today, but we shall see over the next few years if the change has worked, imo she is not the great expert we are all told that she is as if that were the case I'm sure we would not be posting things like this on here.

It does sort of feel doesn't it, that this transition period is a little less successful than the old days. It doesn't feel like a few years ago, when she seemed to have a Ribblesdale filly every other year. I hope she is being taken in the right direction, but would agree with Prima that it does appear to be a wise move. I would be keen for her to hold onto the very best of her old families though.
I think Jeff, that she doesn't do really badly - 20 domestic winners last year - and she can never be remotely dominant having only 10% of the mares that the big boys have. She operates on an aquisitions budget that would be a lot less than that too.
Do you have effective comparisons between similar owner/breeder set ups J.C? I confess I don't so I might be a little off mark.

She should send one to Monsieur Chevalier when he goes to studLaugh

She is being advised by people who are inadequately qualified.
Report Prima Donna August 15, 2010 8:19 PM BST
What would you advise her to do The Gotchee?
Report neill d August 15, 2010 8:59 PM BST
Buy mares who can produce more precocious offspring is what I'd tell her, least she'd know her fait earlier rather than waiting for years to find they're no good
Report neill d August 15, 2010 9:00 PM BST
She wants Classic winners, is she competing in an area where she just can't win?
Report potentialmillionaire August 15, 2010 9:10 PM BST
Doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with her great ambition - to breed a Derby winner though!
Report Prima Donna August 15, 2010 9:27 PM BST
John Warren will help her ,one person I am afraid I would get rid of would be Joe Grimwade. Very nice man but totally wet not the right man for that job, you want somebody ambitious and current.Whilst I don't particularly like JW from a purely personal point of view, he has to be an improvement from his Father-in-Law.I think that she can only improve and move forward, all these things take time, sending them to Richard Hannon is going to help as well you would think, need some speed in her families before a Derby winner comes along!JW's like of Montjeu should help on that front as well.
Report potentialmillionaire August 15, 2010 10:17 PM BST
J G's not a problem, he looks after the horses and staff not the strategy surely.
JW is the trousered one when it comes to the important bits.
I'm with you on Montjeu, he is THE place to go for a Derby winner and he doesn't seem to mind what mare you wheel into the Breeding shed - most of his good'uns come with a ton of stamina on the dams side too.
Are you at York this week P.D.? Any interests there?
Report Prima Donna August 15, 2010 10:29 PM BST
I tend to agree that JG does look after the staff well but in his position he must have some input with the stallion choices, but you are of course right with JW and the important bits.
Yes we shall be over at York this week I shall be meeting Slick tomorrow as she has spent time in France we have a house there, and yes we also have some interest with runners[;)]like everyone we need luck but seem to have a few nice ones, lets hope so.
Report neill d August 16, 2010 2:41 PM BST
Maybe she should focus on sprinters
Report potentialmillionaire August 16, 2010 9:24 PM BST
Good luck then Prima. Keep your eyes on the paddock incase we have some homework for you (sire prospects!)

Personally... I'd have dropped one of the trainers by now - I'll leave you to work out which - as far too often the horses get touched off or arrive too late on the scene... over the last five years It has happened way too often, and the fact the stables is known to be a gambling one and one has learned never to back their horses if they drift oncourse leaves a sour taste in the mouth... NOT suggesting HM is supplementing her Gin Fund by laying horses, btw... before any trouble-maker suggests I am... merely concerned the stables in not delivering the goods and the fact it gambles makes this old cynic suspicious...

Will be interesting to see what happens to her (intended) runner Caraboss at Salisbury today - 3.15... Bred out of Cape Cross, first time out, intended jockey has been jocked off for the returning Ryan Moore...
