Selling / claiming races

I'm sure you are looking for some fairytale stories but I don't have one.  I do however own a mare that is an example (sort of), albeit not hitting the stratospheres that maybe your thread was hoping for.

The highest O.R. the mare ever got was just 68.  However three of her offspring that have raced in this country have achieved O.R.s of 75, 85 & 87 respectively. 

The mare when she raced won a seller and three weeks late her full sister won the first of 4 listed races in her career. Not the right way round for your second question but still.

I cannot take any of the recognisition for these achievements however as I only purchased the mare 18 months ago. She does however have a colt foal by Baltic King who is just 6 weeks old that I can when it wins the Kings Stand, July Cup, Nunthorpe and L'Abbaye in 3 years time.

Also the mare was not "picked up" in this race so again not quite an example you were looking for.  Actually maybe she isn't really an example at all but I've spent the time writing all this so there you go.

Usually bloodstock agents will scour these races in case a well-related but poor performer is entered up in one of these especially if a younger sibling has suddenley emerged and got black type.  I have known agents contact people who have been given mares/fillies as riding horses and try to buy them to sell on to clients at a later date often abroad.

Veronica franco has done very well so far.   

Claimed when rated 48, she improved to win the Autumn Cup at newbury and has so far prduced Lisahane Bog and Franko is my name to win multiple races for the same owner who bought her from the seller.

Nothings impossible but when there are winning mares in foal to £5k+ stallions going for £3k or less then why buy one out of a seller.  People (even the juggernauts of Darley, Juddmonte, etc) rarely miss much and dont race the better related / nice ones if they're no good - that doesnt mean you cant buy them for smallish money at the sales tho. Study the catalogues and past results is my sage advice.

I think that well bred slow race filly would only end up in a seller if she was conformationally challenged too. At that point you have to ask yourself if there is enough point in even doing the research!

Yer Ma makes a good point, but my advice to add to his would be to keep a close  eye on the 'lesser' sales, ie Goresbridge and Ascot. We picked up  the bargain of the decade at Ascot, a very well bred filly out of training who was neither slow nor conformationally challenged. She was a multiple sprint winner and a good strong type. She was also hidden away in a very moderate jump sale as her owner had gone bust and need to get rid of his HIT quick smart. She is from an outstanding producing family [;)]and by a top class sire. Slick spotted her in the catalogue and the Son-in-Law was dispatched to Ascot to get her. No bona fide Flat racing people were there and we got her for a song, an absolute song!
