Come on then. Which ones are best bred for the derby & oaks?
Derby
Midas Touch looks a likely type to me (though I know next to nothing about breeding) being a Galileo out of a Darshaan mare. The dam side of Cape Blanco's pedigree is very speedy, so I see him going for the French Derby. Both SNA & Jan Vermeer will stay fine won't they? I'm on Midas Touch at 14s after he won the Derrinstown and am more than happy with that.
Oaks
Rumoush will stay won't she? Her sister has won over 12f, so that'll do for me. Love that she's a half sister to Ghanaati and Mawatheeq (from a blue blood pov). Akdarena is stoutly bred (too much so?). Doubts about Timepiece staying? I like the fact that Aviate has taken over from Rumoush at the head of the market and my dough will be on Tregoning's filly.
I suppose when it comes down to the top races what is needed is a real turn of foot, horses that have this are as a rule few and far between, that always stamps there class and sets them as a rule above the rest. Montjeu had this more so really than Galileo, for this years Derby I think Midas Touch could be found out for that, to me he could be just lacking for toe when push comes to shove, his win the other day looked good but to my eye he came with a long run and imo went past dying horses, you could think he may be one for the St.Leger, but we will have to see,but good luck with your selection. Jan Vermeer will stay every yard of the trip, his win also looked very good indeed but in a way that race was very much set up for him with only a small field,Cape Blanco won his race in a fashion of a horse that would make you feel he will also stay,in a way the good horses need a mix of speed and stamina, but most important of all a turn of foot, horses also need to on top of there form going into the Derby,Cape Blanco finishing lame was not a good omen as he has had a break.I like SNA and feel that his class along with his turn of foot will come through I'm going to forget his GNS run because the race started slowly then finished like a sprint,a staying horse with speed can and do get themsleves beat like this, what I do know is that SNA has been working very well since NMKT so for me along with his pedigree I very much hope he does it.

Derby: Bright Horizon Galileo/Kissogram-Caerleon. Plenty of stamina and dam was a group winner. Caerleon should help with coping with fast ground if required. Midas Touch. Galileo out of a Darshaan mare. Plenty of stamina and I love Darshaan mares. Again should cope with fast ground. Bullet Train: Sadlers Wells out of a Danehill mare. The two most infuential sires of the last 20 years.
Oaks is more open. Akdarena is out of a Shirley Heights mare. Aviate by Dansili not sure to stay. Gertrude Bell by Sinndar whose progeny are mostly very slow but out of a miler. Gile na Greine, Galileo/Danehill. Timepiece by Zamindar but stamina from Sadlers Wells mare.

I would say you have selected the best bred horse for the Derby and Oaks , Keith. Always worth having a saver on the best bred horse in Classics. Ghanaati and Makfi would have been the best bred in their Guineas.

I always have a look at the Derby a year in advance and have a couple of ante post nibbles on correctly bred types - only 4 or 5 current sires can get a derby winner & all need a decent broodmare sire with no stamina worries
That took me to Moby ****, Don Leone (both of which are useless) and fortunately Midas Touch
Midas Touch looks a stand out, right down to winning his trial in a fast time (just like his sire did in 2001 before going on to epsom glory). The only negative stat was getting beat in a Group race after winning a maiden as most derby winners dont. Jan V has excellent credentials as well and obviously SNA will be a danger to all if back to RP form but for me Midas Touch has it all... although so did Fame and Glory on the same basis last year!
For those looking to 2011, i reckon the winner will come from this lot (currently weeding them out)

Do Pivotal colts get a top class 1 1/2 miles. No, that's the job of his fillies. Dansili would be more likely, Rail Link, Zambezi Sun suggest he shouldn't be ignored. Dynaformer, Medaglia D'Oro, Street Cry, Monsun, Hurricane Run, Shirocco may all throw a spanner in the above too.

Don't really get top class Oasis Dreams over 12f either, seems a strange inclusion imo when like you say there are plenty of other sires who can throw a spanner in the works. Those dams don't look much cop to me either and Wyola's Oasis Dream colt has already raced, Approve, a 5 furlong winner for Willie Haggas

I agree that Pivotal and Oasis Dream are unlikely but this is a work in progress going from a list of 400+ down to hopefully 2 or 3
also not sure about danehill as a broodmare sire for the derby
not looked in that much detail yet but nothing has caught my eye as yet
STS def had the best dam last year but before the event his danzig top line was not copper bottomed to be at his best at 12f & its still probably safer to keep him as a special one off. Best bred horse did not win in 1996 unfortunately for me! although his half brother did in 1993

Given the Mr P sire line, French Derby for Voodoo Prince
Would be lovely if Ouija turned out to be a great producer, that nassau with the equally wonderful Alex Gudrun was one of the all time great filly races

Perry, foaling date is not that important for the Derby. winners foaled in April =STS, Oath, winners foaled in May = C in Chief, Erhaab, High Rise. As for next year i like the pedigree of Galileo -Magnificient Style ( Silver Hawk ).

Foaling date not that important but its just common sense to have it on your side for races up to the derby and where it falls in a horse career ... although as someone who has two foals this year on 22nd april and 8th may i hope your forgiving attitude is prevalent in the sales ring in december '-)
all the stats are just guidance towards the typical types and the clever and fun bit is the interpretation
Your Galileo -Magnificient Style ( Silver Hawk ) ticks a lot of boxes, although the high class mare has got plenty of blacktype performers none has really done it at gp1 level and the best performers were from her earlier crops

Yeah perhaps it's just a little too stout for a modern Derby horse. On paper Ouija Board's colt looks a real prospect, ignore the stamina index of Cape Cross, she had plenty of stamina and her family has loads as well. Kingmambo, granted, doesn't get stayers but I like the blend and it all depends on how good Ouija Board is as a mare imo. I think in Derby horses now a days you want one that will just about get 12f but be better a 10f, i.e they have a bit more tactical speed.

Ben 10 take a look at the pedigree of Authorized, you will not get a more stamina packed pedigree than that , and he won the Derby, also Montjeu had plenty of stamina in his pedigree.

Ben 10, Kingmambo has had 100+ winners at 12f or beyond including Lemon Drop Kid, Rule of Law, Alkaased and El Condor Pasa. Sure he could do with a little help from the dam, but I wouldn't rule out Ouija Board on that score! Mighty, don't expect Voodoo Prince just yet.

Authorized's best performance for me was in the International and he was a good winner of the RP Trophy, although I do agree on paper he looks fairly stout tbf. Kingmambo doesn't get stayers in the same way Montjeu does for example is what I meant. As I pointed out though Voodoo Prince should want a trip. MM, if he does want a trip I wouldn't expect to see him out until around September; Ouija Board herslef didn't race until October.

Thinking about Voodoo Prince, if he has a classic in him its likely to be the 2000gns
out of Mr P stallion, the fantastically bred Kingmambo who was by Mr P himself out of the all-time legend Miesque, who herself was by Nureyev, and out of a cape cross mare who was out of a half sister to lord derbys teleprompter
of all kingmambos 12f performers, most were older horses/raced outside the UK where 11f+ races are less competitive compared to the 7-10f races, and surely if Mr P was going to give us a derby winner he would have done it by now
Admittedly there was some stamina in Ouija's dam but overall it just reads mile/10f and also being a first foal it may not be the best she will produce
that said, i watched in awe from the centre of the course as Ouija powered clear in her oaks having thought she would not stay, so what do i know ;-)

He's just going to be a hype horse and turn out a total flop. The **** i was hearing last year about Benvenuto Henrythenavigator's full brother was unreal i was hearing guineas and st.james palaces that he would be suited to ascot it was clear rubbish cause he turned out to be a donkey.
I would say not to back him and dont get fooled by all the talk about him before his debut cause it can cost alot hope i'm wrong cause i'd love to see him do well cause not to often do top notch racemares turnout top notch in the breeding shed.

Perry, I think statistically a mare's 2nd or 3rd foal is likely to be her best followed pretty closeley by the 1st apparently. This goes against our conventional thought doesn't it, but I think I am quite inclined to go with it, particularly as both English Guineas winners are 1st foals! I think a mare like Ouija Board does a great service to the profile of our game and it's fun to speculate how she'll get on in the paddocks too. I wish Voodoo Prince well!

Don't like him at all Push,I remember when he first stood with Darley he was expensive, also didn't sell that well a lot of breeders got burnt fingers he was getting the hard sell last year, don't think he will make it buyers are very cold on him just now.Would't touch him with a barge pole, but you are right he has a great sire line, thats about the only thing I like about him.

Hey , on JV, at 40-1, just wish i had not layed so much off, thought he was going to France. Backed him right after his maiden win, and in France when he won at 16-1. Just hope the ground is not too firm for him at Epsom. I am on Workforce by default as i thought he would run well in the Guineas and thus be a short price for the Derby, anyway been able to lay that one off easily at the crazy price he is.

I really have never known a year for all the fuss with Ballydoyle runners with the massive thread about Steinbeck then SNA its almost given me a headache,I hope Henry Cecil wins next Sat' with Bullet Train,he may not be goodenough but if i'm right he said that about Commander in Chief, anyway glad you have some good prices I will be at Epsom this week, maybe you will hear me burst into tears when SNA gets stuffed again,or cheering when he swoops past them like a champion.

You sticking with SNA then ? I hope Bullet Train does not win, not much of a winner for my Derby portfolio. I tell myself that Bullet Trains form is not good enough to win, and he is rated too low, but i am surprised how much money there is for him , so maybe he has improved alot since his last race ? Just hope for Aidans sanity he gets the winner this year. Have a great day at Epsom, and back Midas Touch ( eachway )

I thought I would put up my Derby ratings based purely upon pedigree. The ratings are the median rating achieved between 1996 and 2009 for Three Year Olds over three distance categories 10f to under 12.5f, 12.5f to 15f and 15f plus. The first set are Sire only, highest rated 12.5 to 15f, the second set Sire and Dam Sire combined. Obviously there are a few I couldn't rate. As they end in 2009 they take no account of the entrants form itself.

Hello push only the other day I was saying you haven't been on the forum for ages, welcome back its good to hear from you.Ha Ha Ha indeed you are very shrewd I remember you picking Workforce out way before the Derby, all the time I was banging on about the great SNA...........look where that got me .As time has shown us he is just a good but NOT brilliant runner who I'd have down as a future NH sire.Well done for selecting Nathaniel I will always listen to your better judgement in future, hope all is well with you.

Hello Prima Donna , great to hear from you, are you breeding plenty of winners ? I kind of lost some of my interest in horse racing, but still keep an eye on the big races, that Galileo is having an unbelievable year. I did back Nathaniel for the Derby at 70-1 , but a no show put an end to that bet. Looking forward to the Sussex stakes Frankel, or that non stayer Canford Cliffs ( ha , ha )?

Thats good to know, i guess you are heavily invested in the Danehill line both fillies and colts ? I think tactics may play a big part in the Sussex Stakes, i know they are talking about holding Frankel up in his races, but if ever there is a race you can win from the front it is the Sussex.

Frankel will be held up a bit longer but he will be piling on the pressure in the last 2f and CC won't be able to quicken past a horse that is quickening off a strong pace, F wins a shade comfortably.
Prima if I'm right, by way of settling a small wager you can add one of my mares to Frankels book when you go in to Banstead for next years deal!

I'm with Frankel, my reasoning is Frankel won the St James' Palace in 1m 39.24s, Candleford Cliffs won the Queen Anne Stakes in 1m 38.38s, so under a seconds difference but Frankel gets 8lb. Frankel wins imo. Zoffany may also get second too, CC only third even, could you imagine.
I'm hopefully going along, any other forumites heading there?

push, yes we have a fair amount of Danehill line stock but plenty of others too,we have had some really nice foals this year and some nice yearling to offer later on.
Pot M,Shall we say I'll bear that in mind, what sort of deal are you after?I like you should start saving now![;)]
Posh Paddy,I think that your analysis of those two is very credible, but I can't see Frankle beating Canford Cliffs (unless CC runs like a dog)When CC last ran he was always going to take Goldikova,he really just took the pi$$ and won very cheekily never in any doubt imo,I can see him doing the same again with Frankle a bit like he did when beating Rip Van Winkle last year. And I will be there as this is one race I really want to see.

If Canford Cliffs wins then ofcourse the bet reverts to a 'sportsmans' version. (Much as you expected I daresay )
All those able to get there, lucky buGGers the lot of you, have a great day!

Frankel has more Galileo than I thought so your photo is most educational. But I suppose a Galileo with a bit more substance is what everyone wants. - Can't think they'll want Frankel though, not after that St James's Palace
Canford Cliffs looks lovely, but I think from a mating point of view a slightly stronger mare with plenty of pedigree. Confirmation wise, he is surely going to suit all those Danehill mares.

Mrs PP who would know a great deal more about confirmation than me much prefers Candford Cliffs. Frankel is a bullock of a horse, he's as wide as he is tall as he is long. A stocky tank of an individual imo.
