Like most of us on here I suspect, I have Brian as a green, but it is with more than a little reluctance. Although everything points to a Brian victory, there is still a nagging doubt in my mind. I'm convinced he can still be beaten.
The reason I think he can be beaten is the lack of love for him. Unlike the Brian who won the second series, a Brian that was genuinely loved by the viewers, this Brian is too knowing, too 'bi tchy camp' and just too full of himself. Yes, he 'owns' the house, yes the BB environment and format suits him to a tee, but I get the sense that the viewers don't really want him to win. This is why he can still be backed at aroung 1.6 and not the 1.2 he probably would be if he still had the same appeal as before.
The question this raises is who could beat him?
Victor has some kind of claim and Chantelle has claims, but I question whether either of them has the 'gears' to win out. Chantelle's appeal rests on the one storyline and Vic, although entertaining, is going to have to show a softer side which may not exist. The HM I have backed against is Nikki. From starting out convinced that Nikki would be an also ran, but I've changed my mind. I like the Nikki I am seeing.
The key moment for me was the last round of nominations. The Nikki that once was would have just shouted and pouted, this Nikki just burst out laughing when she got her 'shocks'. Yes, she can still be a pain, yes she might end up getting evicted on a negative vote, but there is definitely something okay about this Nikki. She still looks like a strange cross between a child and an old woman, but she has gained a self-knowledge and a self-awareness.
Please feel free to mock, but I suspect there may be quite a few viewers out there who want a viable alternative to Brian and have latent liking for Nikki. Given a fair run of things, a decent tree of temptation and an opportunity to show her vulnerable side - then there is a just a chance that, like Ulrika did in CBB, Nikki could hit the winning line at the just the right time.
Doubtless events will decree me the ultimate mug, but there you go.

Regards to All.

At least you've given some reasoning so fair play lg. There are ****s in his armour I agree, though like yourself even though I see them I'm keeping him green.

Lol with ch1nks, Kenneth Tong will be furious.

Hi lg, was loving everything about the the post, right up until the point you introduced the name Nikki[:o]. You redeemed yourself when you said "she could do it like Ulrika", and I know that is a coded message saying Ulrika is the chosen oneMischief

Best of luck mate, I hope this is not going to be a procession led by Brian, the chosen one.

Ulrika was the chosen one, when she won. Bit like Nadia sadly I think they've had their time.

The 'chosen one' may never have existed and certainly doesn't now. Only my view of course.

In Nikki's case, yes a longshot but still that IMO - she couldnt even go close to winning in her year, let alone this one, so I can't see how she does it against this field.

Saying nikki couldnt go close to winiining in her year is a bit simplistic imo

She was very much a love-hate figure in her year

She was evicted with 37% but voted back in with 63%

After the shambles of letting someone return, after being voted out, the odds were heavily stacked against her

She seems a lot more grown up now, and aware of her shortcomings, and still as funny

She was also up against one of the best BB winners of all time Pete Bennett. On reflection, this is pretty strong form and compares favourably with many winners who beat nothing (Brian, Cameron, Brian B, Rachel, Sophie and Josie,) so I would agree with A1 B.

Also glynn second and Aisleyn third were both strong hms and would have been possible winners in most other years

lg,you do like your thread titles [;)]

My personal fav was the one you came up for Dawn in BB7 or 8??

She obviously took great umbrage at your tip and performed a one woman demonstration in the DR to get thrown of the show [:D]

p.s you could be right about Nikki xx
By:

When: 02 Sep 10 13:30
aa - I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast so I certainly can't remember Dawn from BB7/8.

Brian is clearly favourite and will probably win, but I am not so certain there is as much between Chanters and the Nikster in a positive vote. Nikki does have the 'implode factor' (although she has more licence than most in this respect because her implosions are usually funny as well) so backers are taking a risk.
But at around 25-1 on here it looks worth a few shekels as it is not impossible that Brian could get beat.

All about BB wanting a black winner....must have been BB7,as you were clearly ahead of your time Happy

It's a good post lg. I've been stating the same about Brian while also having him green. I've expected to read more cynicism towards him on sites like DS. Maybe it's the lack of viable alternatives. I think Chantelle could still mount a challenge but needs some more sympathy/vulnerability fuel from the whole Preston thing.
By:

When: 02 Sep 10 14:40
aa - much as I would welcome being ahead of my time, the most common thing I'm told is that "there is a lot less to you than meets the eye".

Mind you, they got their black winner next year.

Smiley Face.

PS trust all is well in your world. I saw you on the politics forum a bit during the last election. Then again, as Belo said "politics is just showbiz for ugly people". Funny that he was bright enough to come out with this and yet he didn't know who Shakespeare was. Who would have thought it, eh?
By:

Nikki was up against Pete Bennett, but that's a bit of a red herring given that she didn't beat Ash or Glynn. People say they were strong housemates, but I'm not that convinced they were all that great shakes. Plus, surely she had ALL her fans voting for her to win the last time??

Good post lg. Brian's trying too hard, and he's too self-aware now. Plus he always seems to plant himself - as the 'comedy' alternative - right in the middle of any 'event' that he knows may make the edit; this can be seen as just very good game-playing, but are the BB viewers more sussed towards this now? There certainly isn't the love there for Brian now that there was for the innocent Brian of BB2.

But then again, as you said, where's the alternative? I guess this all explains why, apart from a very small nibble at Nick Silly, I've had a big fat NO BET so far during this UBB Sad

If he's 1.3ish on finals night and up against Victor, Nikki, Chantelle and Ulrika, he's worth a lay imo.

A very well written and reasoned post LG.

I have to say i have been very surprised at just how funny and entertaining i have found Brian. While i think there is nothing about Brian to really dislike i agree with your thoughts he is not really loved as much as he is entertaining and very funny.

Victor will always be my favourite housemate but i dont think a lot of girls will see the same humour in him that many men do. I think he will always be too brash for many female voters.

Quite agree about the General Election. A real contest, see-saw momentum, result in doubt, four brilliant live debates (including the excellent Chancellor's debate) and 650 constituencies all priced up by bookmakers who were shooting in the dark.

Marvellous.

Hi L.G. reading through your thoughts on this thread and as ever an interesting viewpoint re Brian. I must admit to finding not quite as unlikeable as I thought I would, that said it does appear that he, the housemates and the general public assume him to be the winner. He is also rather contrived playing his persona of 8 years ago it comes across as a bit of an act.
For these reasons I think he is opposable not at his current odds but at his odds of 11.00 pm tomorrow for now I am happy to take 7/2 on Chantelle she is still the girl next door and has the underdog status, with Preston leaving probably Tuesday she could just get the impetus she needs to pinch the prize on the line.
Good luck and best regards.

Chantelle is the story of this BB and its now quite obviously an editorial choice made by the producers before the show began. Whether her journey can beat the best ever BB performer is open to question but Ive moved a bit of green from Brian to Chantelle in the last 48 hours. Their ability to manipulate the outcome make this a closer contest than the odds suggest.

I just can't see Nikki getting anywhere the winning line lg, she was up to her tricks again last night, bitching about not being able to sleep because people were snoring. Where is her sympathy going to come from in that sort of situation, when the housemates in BB just went through 13 weeks of Steve snoring like a 747.
Even worse for her, it was shown in the final segment of the show, where it tends to leave a lasting impression on the viewers.

Hi Pakey
I would not call what Nikki did last night as 'bit ching'. It was a Nikki rant pure and simple and I'm afraid to admit that I love watching her rant. Admittedly, Nikki needs to be given an opportunity to show another side if she is going to win (and of course, there may not be another side, but I would not have backed her if I thought there wasn't something more). Regardless, given a choice between watching Brian's attempts to permanently get camera, watching Ulrika pull faces, listening to the three witches or witness Chantelle/Preston setting up a magazine when they leave the house, I would rather watch Nikki (and tbf Victor) faults and all. She makes me smile.
I have a green book and although I may go down with the ship in respect of Nikki, I'll accept my fate as usual.
Hope all is good.
Best Regards

I agree that Nikki's rants which we have been shown more over the past few days are just classic Nikki and will remind people why they loved (and hated) her all along.  The real problem is when she crosses the line and becomes too OTT and seems too contrived like when she returned to the house before.  I like watching her when she remains on the right side of amusing and entertaining with her ranting and face pulling.  She is one of the few females who can just about get away with this.

Her face is like one of those soft squeezy stress balls which used to be given out as a freebie by office supply companies.

Plenty of forumites could do with some of them come to think of it.

Hi Squares
The key word you use is 'contrived'. Nikki stands no chance if viewers think that Nikki's rants are contrived. Last night's explosion was not contrived in my view. Nikki is precious about her sleep and does get tired and irritable if she can't sleep. I know Nikki is dramatic/difficult/annoying/spoilt/irritating (delete as appropriate), but I can't help liking her and feeling protective towards her. Then again, I don't vote and I daresay Pakey's view of Nikki is more reflective of the public mood than my own warped perspective.

Horse for you to consider - Smart Endeavour (2.30 Brighton). Not a tip, but is dangerously well handicapped and has been campaigned over the wrong trip the last twice. With this stable it is all about the money and if it is bet, I would think the gelding would go close.

If you have a green book lg, then you are a better man than me. With the favourites looking a bit untouchable at the start, I just thought I would have a couple of outsiders against them, and those have been my only bets so far. Except for having a little on Nick to go tonight, but as I am terrible at evictions, I usually write that money off as soon as it is placed.Cry

You would rather watch Nikki and Victor, and those are the two, apart from Makosi that I would least want to give airtime.
Isn't it strange how we all see things differently?

To be honest, I think I would happily see anybody win apart from Brian, as I have never liked being force fed a winner in these things.

All the best mate

We have a friend whose daughter is like a miniature Nikki, she is an absolute spoilt little whatsit, who always gets what she wants/demands, and makes everybody's life hell if she does not get it.
We laugh about it, but our friend would be mortified if they knew what everybody thought about her little darling.

Do you have any equine entertainment for us today?, unfortunately I missed your last one.
It's been quite profitable following the wonderful Mr Johnston this week, as he has had some very decent priced winners.
