It's been a case of so far - so good, as far as England's tour Down Under is concerned. Valuable time has been spent out in the middle and there have been some confidence enhancing performances from key players. It was a relief to see [b]Alastair Cook[/b] come good against South Australia, the irony of course is that everyone is thinking "what a waste of a ton" but let's hope that the confidence that he has gained from that knock enables him to repeat the performance in Brisbane next week.
The bowling has looked impressive and James Anderson has laid his raspberry blowing foundations with some very good spells. It's odd how your memory plays tricks on you. Back in 1970 you couldn't sit up all night to watch [b]the Ashes[/b] live on TV because it wasn't shown. We'd barely got colour then, never mind satellites. But I did devour every word that was written from Down Under during that winter, and I clearly recall Ray Illingworth being one of the key figures, not only as a captain but a bowler.
In fact, I was lucky enough to be asked to ghost a coaching book for him a few years later, and sat enthralled in his Pudsey home learning the secrets of the man I thought had spun the [b]Aussies[/b] into defeat across an epic seven Test series.
Look at the record books this morning and I'm so wrong. Four of England's bowlers took more than the 10 wickets he collected, and quite clearly off spin wasn't...

England selector Geoff Miller was quoted during an interview that he gave last month and made to sound like a script writer for a blue comedian from a bygone era! He said "Size obviously does matter. We've got cover in bouncy areas but people who can swing as well!" Ignoring the double entendres (that Benny Hill would have been proud of ) there is a message of intent in that statement.
England have [b]three pace bowlers[/b] in their Ashes squad, Chris Tremlett, Steve Finn and Stuart Broad who measure 6 ft 6 ins or more (no big boy comments please)! The advantage of delivering the ball from height on hard and bouncy tracks is obvious and the higher the hand is at the moment of delivery the greater the danger to the batsmen.
