What are our ongoing costs for training a racehorse ?
Once an interest in a racehorse has been procured, the owner is then responsible for the ongoing costs of his or her interest. Training costs are calculated on a monthly basis and typically include training fees, agistment or spelling fees, farrier, dentist, veterinary and medication fees, transportation, staff, track fees, supplements etc. The monthly fees can vary depending on the stage of training, for example, two-year-olds usually cost less in the first year while horses contesting races incur the most fees. We recommend budgeting $3,000 per month (or $300 per 10% interest) in the first year, and $4,000 per month (or $400 per 10% interest) in the following years, all costs averaged over the year.
That is with Bart Cummings. I was told around 150 per month for 5% share, which is the same as mentioned above, but I can guarantee I have spent a whole lot more than that. Closer to double.

in 2001 it was on average $3000 per month we were charged for a filly, that included vet, farrier, feed etc, but reduced when the filly was spelling reduced to more or less agistment fee's
its wayyyyyy more if its actually racing, during spring carnival your looking at 6k including all extras. its also cheaper in melbourne than sydney but obviously still varies between trainers
To put it into perspective. I started paying for mine in October 2012. It has won 230k in that time, and I am breaking about even on it if not very slightly in front and judging its trial, it will be another costly year.
Sorry, inclusive of the 100k purchase price. Around 110k for fees, race entries etc...

Admittedly I am including all costs, and extras for syndicates. Basically all costs to get it to the races, for 9 starts.

Oct invoice was 398 dollars, just for Ryan. From where I sit, 5% share, says that is an 8,000 dollar month.

On top of that, 55 a month syndicate, and 35 a day when spelling. Say 50% of the time. Another 315. 1500 extra race entry.
My maths puts that at 5030 dollars I have spent in 13 months getting the horse to the races. At 5%, that puts that to 100,600, for 13 months total cost.
100k purchase price puts it to 200,600.
228k in prize money, getting 85% back (15% I think they take, jockey/trainer?), is 193,800. -6800, or 340 down. And that is inclusive of prizemoney won in November, yet not including the fees since the end of October.

Yes, training costs are around 100 a day, putting it at 3000 per month in work. But by the time you pay vets, float fees, farriers, staff, staff accomodation, staff meals, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc, you find yourself needing to win a G1 just to get your nose in front. And they aren't easy to come by, especially if you watched its trial yesterday. Looks like it has learnt zilch.
If it didn't still have its nuts, it would be going around purely as an expensive hobby.

example: 66k purchase price, for sale for 88k 5 days later (supposedly includes insurance, payup, float, vet, breaking)
Insurance for 66k is 300
Magic millions pay up is 3300
a vet to look at an x ray ??? 500 maybe
float gold coast to sydney ??? 1000 maybe
breaking for a month ?? around 16k apparently as thats whats left over
