Anyone see the ride of Koby Jennings on Croupier last Friday the 10th Jan at Canberra? Here's a horse that has gone around at the SP of $4.40 and has been an absolute shocker of ride for the first half of the race. Koby was gifted the lead with two of the easiest sections you could want but instead of using that to his advantage he then restrained the horse to the point of choking. They went so so slow in the early part that Jay Ford who had restrained the eventual winner Scene of the Crime back to three wide second last cruised around the field to take the lead in a jog trot. Stewards deemed that Croupier was inclined to race keenly??? They need to start supplying some of their staff with seeing eye dogs, because Blind Freddy could see why the horse raced keenly at that point...It wasn't given any chance to race to perform to it's best, which was to run at a tempo suitable to the horse. How can the stewards justify charges of senior riders going out too fast or getting too far back when they can't even make note of a very poorly judged ride by an apprentice which needs to go back to jockey school to learn to count evens.

You could be right Apache though the kid might have been following instructions to take a sit as the horse seems a little suspect at the mile at the moment. Agreed, some initiative could have been shown by the jock. Same with the stewards who could have questioned connections and given some constructive advice to the rider.
Anywhere I could watch a replay of the race AC? Didn't record that meeting but will try to view on catch up TV, think it goes back 7 days? The Stewards are too interested in taking down certain trainers/jockeys imho.

The kid is only an L plater and L platers grab hold when they should kick up and kick up when they should grab hold. Unlikely there was anything sinister but can't be ruled out entirely
I don't suggest anything sinister took place in the race and an L plater he is. But they have run over 3 secs outside the track record on a good track... If jockeys can be suspended for going too fast then why not too slow? My complaint is that stewards don't seem to have a problem with races run like barrier trials. Why? A mile race run in a pathetic 1:38.58, the last 600m in 33.83 and the first 1000m run in 1:04.75 and not one question asked by the morons in charge on the day. I would ask those same morons the question what closing sections would the horses that were back 2-5 lengths off the pace need to run to win the race and were they given every chance to win?
Cheers for the link Spy. Watched race now and must admit Jennings has butchered CROUPIER, but don't see how he necessarily is culpable under the rules? He rode it like a jockey that was explicity told to obtain cover and thought of nothing else but! Unfortunately he's had to strangle the horse for best part of two furlongs before getting a smother behind the eventual winner, which was gifted a soft lead and just 'highballed' in front.
For Stewards to charge him with anything they need to be satisfied that in all probability the horse would have won but for his actions (having finished 2nd), and I don't think the subsequent running of the race conclusively proves that?
Hats off to Penza for showing initiative and sliding forward when the gallop was so pedestrian early. I don't like the bloke personally as a rider but he knocks up riding winners and I remember talking to his manager a few years back, and he told me what he'd earned for that financial year. Well fook me it was more than the prime minister gets paid!!!

The lack of action by the pork pie hats when they should and the over action when they shouldn't has always been a concern.
Part of the problem is the L plater's of this era don't have the inboard ability to count like the B.Yorks or 'Arms Out' K.Moses of the past era.
That race(canberra) is better suited to the Harness and perhaps therein lies an option.
A small electronic board on the inside of the rail showing the hoops the first 600 or 800 split a la Harness.
In fact in this evolving era of electronic gee-whiz necessities i suggest it will happen.
Never thought i would be saying this but our crop of feline hoops have no fear of 'going' forward to annoy the leader or be near the lead and for that i applaud them.
Now I'll go wash my mouth out.
