EXCLUSIVE: A PROMINENT racing identity who bought Black Caviar's half-brother and a stake in a horse linked to the Mokbels has denied that members of his multi-million dollar punting club have lost their money.
Bill Vlahos, 44, said the communal pool in his punting club amounted to tens of millions of dollars with fortunes gambled every Saturday on horse races in Melbourne and Sydney.
The members of the betting syndicate are understood to include high profile Victorians in the fields of AFL, farming, the building industry and the media.
The Herald Sun has obtained an email Mr Vlahos sent to his punting club last month, responding to members' concerns about delays in payouts after he revealed he was closing the club.
"I understand this is not the news that everyone wanted to hear including myself," he wrote in the email.
"This has been a harrowing experience for all involved and nearly been the death of me."
Mr Vlahos told the Herald Sun the members will be paid within two weeks.
"I'm very confident in two weeks' time that everyone will have their money," he said.
Mr Vlahos said that the maths-based system he used for the punting club brought constant quarterly profits back into the common pool.
He said returns of more than 6 per cent were made each quarter with only one losing quarter in eight years' of gambling with the syndicate's money.
Mr Vlahos said he was closing the club because he wanted to spend more time with his family.
Punters clubs, which are not illegal, come under the umbrella of Consumer Affairs and the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission warns to be careful of investments that offer exceptionally high returns.
Mr Vlahos' club has 20 main members who sometimes encouraged others to invest.
There was no minimum stake or unit to join, but some punters had more than $1 million invested, he said.
Members were sent a weekly spreadsheet of bets that would be placed according to Mr Vlahos' system.
The bets were sent to an broker, who placed them on international gambling markets.
Mr Vlahos developed his system during a two-year stint living near Randwick racecourse when he was not working full-time.
He said he used his mathematical training gained during his La Trobe University psychology degree to come up with a way to beat the odds.
Mr Vlahos said that members of his club trusted him despite the lack of written contracts, and accepted that he collected five per cent of the winnings.
"There's nothing in writing because it's a punting club and it's a trust punting club, the people that are in it have made the decision that they understand how the punting club works between me and them," he said.
Mr Vlahos previously came to prominence when he bought a stake in racehorse Pillars of Hercules in 2007, which was sold because of concerns of ownership links to Horty Mokbel, the brother of convicted drug dealer Tony Mokbel.

A well-known Victorian racing identity accused of mishandling more than $190 million from an exclusive punters' club has not paid a $5 million bill for the half-brother of champion mare Black Caviar.
Bill Vlahos, representing the BC3 Thoroughbreds syndicate, bought the yearling - the most expensive sale of its kind in Australian history - six months ago from leading bloodstock company, Inglis.
At a court hearing on Friday, Mr Vlahos was questioned over the whereabouts of a $194 million Westpac account containing the punters' club funds, but which the bank says does not exist. Mr Vlahos said he realised the money was missing only this week, as his Dubai-based business partner had been dealing with Westpac.
Mr Vlahos has had more than $26 million of his fortune frozen and is prohibited from leaving the country after at least one disgruntled member of his exclusive punters' club launched legal action over the missing funds.

This does not mean the man in the middle of the collapsed betting system he called "The Edge" would dream of doing such a thing. But police must still carry out "routine inquiries".
And, so far, the investigation has raised more questions than answers.
Trusted employees of BC3 Thoroughbreds who rushed to the Connewarre property on Sunday night have told detectives the yellow jerry can of diesel found near the smouldering utility came from a shed on the property. One large plastic container might look like another, but this one had a distinctive handwritten label on it.
This has led puzzled police to conclude that if intruders attacked Mr Vlahos (as he claims) then they apparently first searched the property for fuel rather than bringing it with them.
While forensics experts check who handled the container, investigators are pondering other inconsistencies.
A neighbour who found the agitated Mr Vlahos on the ground near the property's front gate recalls him saying "three men" had attacked him. But another neighbour recalls him saying "two men".
In one version, Mr Vlahos allegedly said the attackers were "Lebanese", but another witness thought he said "Yugoslavs".
Witnesses are, of course, reliably unreliable.
There are other problems for those trying to find the truth behind this scandal. :Investors" are embarrassed, shattered and angry.
A source close to BC3 Thoroughbreds - the bloodstock and racing arm of the Vlahos enterprises - has told people that "all the paperwork" for the punting club happened to be in the car when it burned. This is terrible luck for someone who has already mislaid, supposedly, $194 million of other people's money.

One veteran policeman admitted yesterday he cashed in his long service leave to "invest"and he knows several others who have put in large sums - including one who says he's owed more than $500,000. The policeman resents that he was persuaded against his own better judgment.
But his problems pale against those of a former AFL player and man-about-town, who not only invested his own money in the scheme but spruiked its benefits to others.
The former player has gone into hiding. A bad day turned much worse on Monday morning when two large, menacing men walked into his city office.
They stayed just long enough to deliver an ultimatum and a threat. When they left, he was so frightened he could hardly speak. It seems the men blamed him for certain people losing large amounts.
A colleague told him to go straight home and pick up his wife and flee, because some very ugly bikers are out to mess up his face.

The former player has gone into hiding. A bad day turned much worse on Monday morning when two large, menacing men walked into his city office.
They stayed just long enough to deliver an ultimatum and a threat. When they left, he was so frightened he could hardly speak. It seems the men blamed him for certain people losing large amounts.

Hayes was stung by con man Michael Bastion in Hong Kong.
Hayes, an Australian Hall Of Fame member, was the dominant trainer in Hong Kong when Bastion, a flamboyant party boy, horse trader and punter, was exposed for perpetrating a $35 million fraud, of which $25 million was never recovered.
Bastion, 38, plunged to his death from the roof of a Hong Kong hotel in 2000 while Hayes waited in the lobby for him for a dinner appointment.
Hayes lost a reported $1.3 million and had to stay in Hong Kong for several more years to recoup it before returning home to buy the family farm, Lindsay Park, in South Australia.
"The Bastion experience taught me that if it is too good to be true, it normally is," Hayes said.
Now based at Euroa and again a force in Australian racing, Hayes said investors "have to move on" from such setbacks.
"There is nothing you can do," he said.
"It is really unfortunate for the investors. But there has been insider trading in the stock market for years and the stock market is still going. Racing must be the same.
"This is an isolated incident. In fact, it is unique because, from what I can gather, the whole thing didn't exist.
"I don't think people can blame the racing industry. I think racing is very well policed. But this is a betting syndicate and racing has no controls over that.
" This is a police matter and a matter for the courts."

In the six years before his death, Bastion's "personal expenditure" totalled $7.1 million.
His average American Express bill was $50,000 a month. He flew first class. And when the liquidator obtained Bastion's records from the high-rollers' room in Melbourne's Crown Casino, it was found he had spent $750,000 there in 12 months.
He had bought 102 racehorses for $12 million in the four years before his death.
He was a director or shareholder of 23 companies in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, the British Virgin Islands and Vanuatu.
When he set up investments offering huge returns, he was inundated.
Bastion told his investors he could give them a return of 50 per cent.
The reality was that it was a giant Ponzi scheme.

Bastion did have a party trick that he preformed on a regular basis, instead of walking the long way around from his living room to his bedroom he would leap from lounge room balcony to the bedroom balcony. Maybe running late for the appointment with Hayes he decided the short cut and slipped or maybe an ankle tap just before take off.
As a lover of all horses, but in particular the magnificent thoroughbred, it is with a heavy heart that I write this post. At approximately 11am this morning the Redoute's Choice x Helsinge two year old colt known as Jimmy was euthanized on humane grounds at the Melbourne University Veterinary Hospital in Werribee Victoria. Jimmy was suffering from laminitis, a painful hoof condition that impacts on the mobility of horses. It is believed the laminitis developed after suffering an adverse reaction to antibiotics, which were being used to treat his swollen leg when admitted to the Hospital in early November. Jimmy became a household name after setting a new record price as yearling at the 2013 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale reaching $5m to the bid of BC3 Thoroughbreds. As the younger sibling to Champions Black Caviar and All Too Hard, we all had great expectations for Jimmy on the track and in the breeding barn. This is a very sad outcome for all involved. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff at the Werribee Hospital for their dedicated care, in particular to Dr Chris Whitton and his colleagues who monitored Jimmy throughout the Christmas period.

DEVASTATED owners of Black Caviar's half-brother Jimmy fear losing their money as well as the horse after the $5 million colt was put down in the latest twist in the "Dollar Bill" Vlahos scandal.
The most expensive colt sold at auction in Australia was never able to race after life-threatening complications of laminitis, a hoof complaint developed after treatment for a mysterious spider bite.
Sorrow turned to anger on Sunday night when investors in Bill Vlahos's BC3 Thoroughbreds realised they might have to pursue bloodstock agents Inglis for their share of a $5 million insurance payout.
One Goulburn Valley family syndicate paid $70,000 in insurance premiums above the $250,000 stake they put up for a 5 per cent share in the doomed colt at the Sydney Yearling Sales last Easter.
Graeme Wood, of Mooroopna, said: "Those of us who paid for the horse and paid for the insurance policy are morally entitled to our share of the insurance payout."
But Mr Wood admitted he and other owners were not sure of their legal position until they contacted Inglis and liquidators of BC3 Thoroughbreds.
Would-be owners all over Australia have paid similar amounts, believing they would jointly own Jimmy, only to discover this month that the colt was not paid for, not registered and their names were not on any papers.
Former BC3 Thoroughbreds chief Craig Cameron confirmed yesterday that the insurance policy - held by Inglis - had been paid up but he did not know who was entitled to claim on it.
The blue-blooded colt's death follows a month of turmoil in one of racing's greatest scandals since the 1980s Fine Cotton ring-in.
News last month that Jimmy had been bit by a spider led to the chain of events that uncovered the $200 million "punters club" that mystery man Bill Vlahos set up to subsidise BC3 Thoroughbreds.
Mr Cameron dismissed any suggestions of foul play over the bite, saying staff were devastated by the loss of a horse they had loved.
"I don't think it's possible anyone could have harmed this horse without any one of us knowing. He was under constant supervision,'' Mr Cameron said.
"I've heard all the rumour and speculation and it hurts. It's very difficult to accept.''
Melbourne University Veterinary Hospital's Dr Chris Whitton, in consultation with the vet from the insurance company covering the colt, decided to euthanise him after believing there was no more to be done to prevent intolerable pain.
Mr Vlahos has gone into hiding since he was allegedly bashed and his utility torched at BC3's training property at Connewarre near Geelong three weeks ago.
Staff told police they believed Mr Vlahos's injuries were self-inflicted and that fuel used to ignite the car came from the property.
Mr Vlahos claimed he could not produce emails and spreadsheets relating to his collapsed punting club "The Edge" because they were stored on a laptop destroyed in the fire .
He told a Sydney court hearing that "$194 million", supposedly held in a Westpac bank account, vanished with an associate called "Daniel Maxwell" in Dubai.
But when a Herald Sun reporter traced the Dubai address he gave, the mysterious Maxwell had never been heard of there .
Mr Cameron said those staff still working on the Connewarre property were distressed that Jimmy had been put down.
"Nearly everyone there was in tears when they got the news," he said.
Disappointed owner Rob McIldowie said that, like the others in his position, he was worried about getting the insurance money. But he stressed that the horse had the best veterinary care "from day one".
The Wood family of Mooroopna have lost
money through Mr Vlahos but are hoping their share of Jimmy's big sister Belle Couture will restore their battered fortunes.
The $2.5 million filly failed by a short half head in her race debut at Bendigo last week.

surely there must be some oversight there somewhere - fair enough the punters club wasn't monitored but selling shares in horses should be

question is - does the industry have the balls to fix it? my guess no as the breeders would lose out too much if the rules change and they run the show

jockeys betting against themselves ... punters & owners clubs with no bonafides or legal paperwork coverage ... fathers & sons tipping for and against mothers horses ... money laundering ... big player kickback arrangements thru betting agencies ... get barred if you back a winner multi million dollar overseas owned firms ... stewards unable to see the most obvious of race stitchups but tell us all is okay ... ffs
