Has anyone thought about going to the ACCC and complaining about Tabcorp advertising a product (Fixed Odds) at an advertised price, and then refusing to sell that product (Fixed odds) at the advertised price.

As a general rule, suppliers have the right to choose who they wish to deal with and there are many reasons why a supplier may refuse to supply goods or services.

Bricklayer - A bookmaker's displayed price is like an invitation to treat in contract law, ie it is not an offer.  You then offer the bet.  If they accept your offer you have a contract, but they are not bound by law to accept your offer.

I think this is confusing for some people.  I am not certain what effect false advertising regulations have on this, but I doubt a bookmaker can be cornered under these sort of regulations because it is understood by all the bookmakers' prices are dynamic depending on all sorts of changing factors.

My point is that Tabcorp is refusing to sell say a $200 bet at 5.00 to the person at the front of the queue, but will then sell that $200 at 5.00 to the next person in the queue.

I can see why you would look at it that way Bricky.

I think the more correct legal way to look at it is the TAB reject the offer of a bet from one person and then accept a similar offer from another person.

If you were selling a property, and you were asking $500k, and one person offered you $500k and you rejected the offer and another person comes along and offers you $500k on exactly the same terms, and you accept the second offer, will the law hold you to the accepting the first offer?

The answer is no.

Where I think punters have the law more on their side than some realise is that if the bookmaker does accept your bet, regardless of whether the bookmaker feels they have made an error in price or the bet can be voided based on some term or condition buried on their website, you should have an enforceable contract out of which the bookmaker cannot wriggle.

If they atleast had the balls to do their own form instead of just following what price the Oz TAB has then you could perhaps have a little sympathy for them. But as it is they're just getting greedier and greedier, much like the corps in Oz.

Eg, earlier this season TAB NZ introduced live head to head betting on AFL matches. The first game they did, Brisbane v Richmond, if Brisbane scored a goal Richmonds odds would come in and Brisbanes odds would go out. If Richmond scored a goal Brisbanes odds would come in and Richmonds odds would go out. THEY DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHICH TEAM WAS WHICH!! FFS. Then after 30 seconds or so after each goal the odds would correct themselves and replicate exactly what Centrebet had.

So they're introducing markets on sports that they know sfa about and if somebody hits a line that they've got wrong, instead of employing someone who knows what they're doing they ban the customer lol. Greed greed greed

That sounds like one of those once in a lifetime windows of opportunity. Excited

Unfortunately you'd get your account closed if you took advantage of it. Fancy that. Banned for having "inside information" on which team was which Laugh

Lol Phil

Yes anyone with an unrestricted account could have made thousands. It would have been worth getting banned just for that one game. At one stage early in the 3rd quarter when Brisbane kicked a crucial goal they went out to $15 at NZ TAB, whilst they were $4 to lay at betfair...

Opportunities have dried up lately though, it seems they've since done their homework on the colours each team wears Shocked

Wont affect me with my $5 and the odd $10 splurge.  But really if someone buys something like a bet and sells it for more, cant see a problem.  Thats good business.

This article re NZ TAB banning punters has attracted a lot of interest in Kiwiland... There's a lot of outrage over here in the general public re this practice, whereas in Oz it just seems to be accepted...

Article seems to only relate to one punter.....

Yes it took a high profile punter for the paper to write a story on it. But it's becoming common knowledge over that the NZ TAB won't have a bar of you if you have a clue.

There's also an interesting discussion on it here...

probably fair to say that a lot of the comments from ppl about the restrictions is from ppl who dont know how some of these sites work..........the nz tab aint alone in this practice,i think the restrictions were just for fixed odds racing, nothing else.

No they're for fixed odds sports aswell.

They don't know anything about any sports so instead of doing their own work and framing their own markets they find it easier to ban/restrict punters. If they need to copy odds from the Oz corps to frame a market, which they do, then they shouldn't be offering those markets in the first place

one thing the tab does offer are big pick6 , or quaddies or triple trio, now i may be mistaken but i dont think a lot of other places do this , i may be wrong , correct me if i am wrong.

but i would say that the betting options for some soccer matches offering just win draw or lose is a bit thin to be honest.

apparently an 80yo Greyhound punter turned $5.0 into $110K on an eight leg multi.....well done grandpa if it's true
personally from my own experience I find it very hard to believe the way they w@nk on about taking $10K plus bets
or having such a big liability as they only welcome mugs and fools with that much cash aint gunna be flush for long

Mike they offer soccer markets from all over the world, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Guatemala, wherever...

But like most other sports they know nothing about them so just copy the odds from Centrebet or Bet365. Albeit at much lower odds, if Bet365 offer $2.7 for team A and $1.50 form team B, NZ TAB will offer $2.50 for team A and $1.40 for team B lol

And be very careful betting live with NZ TAB. They mostly wait 20 seconds or more before deciding whether to accept your bet. If you place a bet on team A and team A scores whilst the bet is processing the bet will be rejected. If team B scores whilst the bet is processing your bet will be accepted instantly!

Back when I was able to bet with them I once had a bet that took them over a minute to process, they eventually accepted it once the other team scored. DOG ACT
