Justice leads charge in Vic Cup war of words

12 December 2012
by Blake Redden

Smoken Up faces an uphill battle to win his second straight Victoria Cup crown Saturday at Melton.
A war of words has erupted this week leading in to the Group 1 SEW-Eurodrive Victoria Cup and the protagonist has been Lance Justice.
As always he has been on the front foot, declaring there never have been and never will be any excuses for his mighty champion Smoken Up if he fails Saturday night.
It has been an intense build-up to one of harness racing’s premier events and with pacers travelling from far and wide for the event there is certain to be a showdown of epic proportions.
Im Themightyquinn has opened well into the red at $1.70 with TAB.com.au while Smoken Up has been tightened from $21 into $18.
The market support may well have come off the back of an interview with Lance Justice following the barrier draw. He spoke to Shane Anderson on RSN’s Winners program earlier in the week.
“I don’t care what anybody says, I don’t care what the experts say, he’s just about back to his best, he’s probably one week short but he’ll be very, very close to his best,” Justice said.
“He’ll be up there, he’ll attack and put some pressure on them, he won’t stop. I’m over people writing him off.”
That test that Justice is willing to apply to the race-favourite is likely to sort out the men from the boys. It could easily turn into a two horse war with Smoken Up seemingly at his best when under pressure.
“It’s just funny that they pick songs for horses… I’m thinking titanium… I could pick one for Im Themightyquinn: The Great Pretender,” Justice said on Winners.
The barb was not lost on Gary Hall Snr who responded promptly in an HRV article on Wednesday.
“I’ve never had anything derogatory to say about his horse, so I’m not sure why he says what he says,” Hall Snr said.
The fireworks will be on show when the gates fold back and Im Themightyquinn is cut loose off the arm. He won’t get it his own way though, Mah Sish and Terrorway have both drawn beneath him will have enough speed to make him work for the front and if Bitobliss comes out humming Justice believes his steed will be right there early.
“I can just see Bitobliss trying to get out of the gate I suppose and I’ll follow it out and get us through and I’ll be up outside and we’ll turn it into an absolute stayers test,” he told RSN.
“I had an omen he was going to draw 12, I told him after the race last week to get used to this barrier because we will be going around in it again next week.”
The gelded son of Tinted Cloud was set a task of winning a lowly $7,000 C7+ pace on his way to one of the state’s best races but Justice believed it was the best race to have him prepared for the weekend.
After not handling Cranbourne on multiple occasions he decided to pull the pin on a Decron Pacing Cup sojourn and rather keep his pacer at home and in winning form.
The decision was somewhat controversial however the real proof will come Saturday night when Smoken Up is again pitted against the best our nation has to offer.
There was one last jibe from Smoken Up’s master-trainer heading into the Group 1 contest.
“There’s going to be no excuses from the horses that have drawn well, hopefully they’re not sick this year or they’re not off colour,” Justice said.
“They’ve got the greatest excuse book under the sun some of them but if we’re not good enough we’re not good enough, that’s the way it is.”

Love the way Lance has been talking this up all week. Hope they are silly enough to hold the front with Quinn, Lance might make sure they run a world record if they do Laugh

I like it how he says he is probably a week short and then pots the Quinn camp for excuses.  But overall it's great pre game talk.  "The Great Pretender", come on don't be shy and tells us what you really think!

Did Gary Hall Jnr start the battle?  "Hall declares war on Smoken Up"

http://www.harness.org.au/news-article.cfm?news_id=17688

Probably not.

$1.70 about TMQ is laughable but there are hundreds of cashed up sandgropers who will back him at literally any price, whatever is going and the fixed odds players are well aware of that by now.  They're used to him winning every start, are convinced he's the best horse in the country and they're looking forward to watching him show the rest of us just that.  And they might well be right, but it's not just about money for them.  If $1.30 was the only price going then they would take $1.30.

Unfortunately as Lloydy said having the race at 5:55 WA time will reduce the number of WA fans betting on the race, which is a shame.

Should be double figure odds DT. Anything single figures is genuine unders.

Hopefully when we do hear from the experts they will concur

IDDI will lead with either Don King or Crescent Glory on his back.  Vulcan / Zion / Earl will then take up the running line positions.

Ideally EI needs a fast lead time or first quarter and there hasn't been one in an open class 2240m trot at Melton for a while now.  He'd then need a cart 3w from one of the above three and would then go very close, but that combination seems very unikely.

Most likely results to me are IDDI leading throughout, or Vulcan enjoying a half decent sit and running him down.  Others seem to agree which explains why they're the only 2 touched so far in fixed betting.

Regarding Abettorpunts race, OUR MALABAR a likely improver, rejoining Lance after a dissapointing stint with Harry Martin??

Drawn 1, ran 2nd in this race last year could be good place value perhaps..

$1.65 TMQ!!!!!!  How is that possible?

Supports my theory that West Aussies long to back him more than zombies like munching brains.

Leaders have won the last 2 races and the fence is clearly advantaged as usual tonight.  It looks like TMQ HAS to come out blazing to take the lead, and will do so, and on that basis evens or less is fair.  And as a bonus this will finally get rid of the "he cant be used early" and "hometown hero" myths.

I think he can definitely do it, but still can't think of taking evens.  The hometown hero theory is obviously rubbish, he's put in some amazing runs outside of WA.

Think the "cant be used early" theory is more debatable.  Sure he deathseated just fine in fast time last week but this will be a very different story.  They'll be flying.

Can't wait.

On face value no excuses for quinnie I wouldnt have thought, I didn't get heavily involved in the race backed mah sish a place at the fixed  $6 on 365 after missing the 7 bucks on here and very small a win and had something on quinnie and something very small at the massive odds on franco jamar so won something small on the race. Well done to anyone who backed carribean blaster.

Quinn didn't really do much early. He got across easily, The Gold Ace didn't put much heat on before restraining quickly, then he handed straight over to Terrorway. Sat behind frantic speed thereafter and got out at the perfect time.

That was not just about working out of the gate, that was more about the fact that he is only a superstar around GP. He fails basically ever time he races in Victoria. You might say he ran third, but there were at least six better runs in the race, it could not have worked out better for him.

Winner is now a complete star, was huge last week and simply too good tonight. Resume is now one of the best currently in racing.

Smoken Up was very good at first watch for mine, expected him to drop out before he did.

Poor Bitobliss had another torrid run right from the start, he may be completely gassed now and might need a short break

It was a Vic Cup DT, of course they are going to run time all the way, they are the best around.

You can't tell me he worked over hard early, had as good a run as any in the race. If he was the best horse he simply wins

Normally everytime I see carribean blaster it's weak I know its record is good but I've just happened to see most of the races its been beaten in and not really many of its wins.

Usually when its got beaten in the races that I've seen, its looked disappointing if it has to get into a fight. Bitobliss was far too strong for it in the kilmore cup after carribean blaster waltzed to the front. It went good tonight no doubt but also had the race run to suit sitting off the speed while everything went to war up up front, Lance produced his usual suicidal drive as well, you werent beating on b and c graders tonight lance. Whoever said it earlier was spot on, that horse doesn't deserve to be  butchered like that at this stage of its career.

MACH ALERT was supposedly almost in the cup field so it must be a decedent horse, I would be surprised if a decent galloper was 24 meters slower than BLACK CAVIAR over 640 meters.

crazy what jnr did tonight I was hoping for a backline draw for that very reason, there wouldn't be a horse anywhere in the country with a better 600m sprint if held up for that one run. Oh and VK dont know how many times I have to prove it I dont lie as I have zero need to.

Was an awesome race, and won by a sensational horse.

I think the lead time of 41.9 stuffed everyone involved.  It's equivalent to a 1:45 mile rate.

When Smoken Up ran the track record last year he ran 43.5.

yeah he's obviously over the top or something bothering him again AD as he's not the same horse currently. I would liked to have seen quinnie have the same type of run as carribean blaster, think you might have seen the real horse then but still he had every possible chance tonight. Confirmed the opinion of my best mate who now lives in NZ nad has been for last 4-5 years now who told me a year and half ago to follow a horse called mah sish as he thought he was a top liner in the making.

your spot on dark target, the lead time was unbelievable. ITMQ's run was sensational given it had next to no chance after the first 600m.

another shocker of a drive by G Hall.

Quinn was only in front for 400m, was nicely covered up for the last part of that lead time

Now 1 out of 8 in Vic and still excuses. I hate sounding like I am knocking him but had every possible and was not good enough

Still AD, I think Khan has a valid point, quinnie was the only one involved in the early battle who was still there at the finish everything else dropped out, that can't be a coincidence.
