Anyone have any idea how they calculate turnover on freebets. Any examples of how much you had to turnover before withdrawing?

Where should I bet?

Since I live in Australia, my advice is mainly directed at the Aussie betting public, however any international punter may find some benefit in my opinions. This has nothing to do with betting regarding casino games or poker and is only for sports and horse betting.

I have been betting over the internet since the inception of betting sites in Australia and overseas. I have at some stage had accounts with all the big betting firms world wide, including Ladbrokes, Hills, Corals and many now defunct sites in the Caribbean and in Canada. I was, and still am, very careful of where I deposited money and with whom I bet and ironically enough I have never been defrauded or lost money through dodgy firms except for Sports Acumen in Australia who went into voluntary liquidation. They left their creditors with over eight million dollar in debt, of which 2-3 million was owed to punters accounts, some of it mine.

I now have no more than half a dozen active accounts which meet my needs adequately and more importantly gives me the best value for my dollar at sourcing the best odds available. Convenience plays a part as well.

I have no need anymore and no desire to hold a betting account directly with any betting companies in Europe or the UK. In years gone by it was necessary because they offered a far superior range of betting options and events than the Australian bookies, however this is now not the case, mainly due to the UK big betting companies now owning the largest betting operations in Australia.

I have always believed and still do that to have SOME chance of succeeding at the punt, you must get the best fixed odds available the majority of the time. So taking this into account I have compiled my list of betting accounts with this being the number one criteria. All else comes second.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the problems you will have with pratically all betting companies regarding your betting habits. I will only touch on this lightly on this page, as it is a subject for further dicussions. If you bet in increments of $1 to $100, you should have no worries whatsoever of being set for all your fixed odds requests with these bookies, even if you have a winning record over a period of time, you will fly under their ‘Risk Management’ radar until you become too obviously successful. Then you will come under some pretty heavy scrutiny regarding your betting limits. If you bet $100 plus and show odds savvy and win your first few weeks (especially on the horses, trots, dogs) your account will be profiled and betting limits imposed or maybe even banned. The bigger you bet the less time you will have, if you are successful, before your account will come to the attention of the risk management department.

The first and the most important account to open is with a BETTING EXCHANGE. If you are not aware what this is, then you should not be betting. So get off your arse and Google it and become familar with all its workings before you have your next bet. I mean go and do your homework if you are going to gamble otherwise take up a different hobby – you will be better off. Now since there is only one betting exchange which has a virtual monopoly on this form of betting the choice is obvious BETFAIR. Your money is as safe as any public company can be? They are on the main board of the UK stock exchange and have a market cap. of around one billion Australian dollars. Your only betting restrictions here will be the liquidity of the markets. That doesn’t mean you should not investigate the other betting exchanges, of which there are no more than half a dozen that I am aware of.

My second account would be with  TABCORP . They are primarily a PARIMUTUEL betting agency (once again if you don’t know what that means back to your homework ffs). They also have a passable fixed odds arm under that banner. They have recently updated their internet site which is now a piece of crap, not that the last was anything great but at least it worked. But if you bet on Australian sports and racing they are needed, plus they have the added convenience of betting shops in Victoria and NSW where cash can be deposited and withdrawn. They have also fallen into the business model of restricting bets of winning accounts on fixed odds betting. You will never be restricted from betting into their Pari Mutuel pools. They restrict bet amounts much more severely on horse, trots and dog racing than they do on sports betting. Even though their displayed fixed odds are sometimes less competitive than many outlets, their markets on Australian sports are very strong and they often display great value for the ‘outsider’ of two way betting markets close to start time. They are a public company on the Australia Stock Exchange and have a market cap. of around 2 billion Aussie dollars. They also own land-based casinos.

My third account and only one off-shore is with PINNACLE SPORTS . This company started in the Caribbean on the island of Curacao and were reported to be the biggest internet betting company in the world until the USA passed the ‘Patriot Act’ and wiped away more than half of their clientele overnight. But even after ceasing to bet USA citzens they carried on their bookmaker practices of offering the most competitive betting markets in the world bar none. They do not ban or treat any accounts differently, you are always told what amounts you can bet, displayed on their betting events for all to see (once logged in). For Australia punters they bet very aggressively on AFL and NRL and their bet amounts grow the closer to start time, for example on a head to head two way market at the start of betting the maximum bet may be to win $500 but by game day it can be to win $5000. They have recently also taken a license in Alderney in the British Isles, I suppose to appease European Union betting conditions. As far as I am aware they are still a private company but they have stood the test of time and in the 12 years I have been betting with them I have never once had a problem with deposits or withdrawals.

The next few companies are in no particular order of preference.

SPORTSBET AUSTRALIA www.sportsbet.com.au and “INTERNATIONAL ALL SPORTS” www.iasbet.com.au are both owned by the Paddy Power Group, and essentially are the same betting sites but under different banners and domains. They have a huge array of betting options on both sports and racing and are very competitive in the Australian betting markets regarding odds. They also offer a great range of giveaways to their clients and top up bonuses. However since the Paddy Power takeover they have become the most aggressive Aussie company in profiling their clients and restricting betting limits and banning clients altogether – they have taken this to the extreme. This firm don’t just profile winners, but also odds-savvy punters and even punters that just break square. Over a period of time they will see their accounts heavily restricted,  sometimes to the point of ludicrous small amounts – and if you dare to find winners on the horses, trots or dogs you will not last long with them. Their web site was the best in Australia until they changed to the ‘Openbet’ system; now it is just too busy and frustratingly slow. Paddy Power are a public company on the Irish stock exchange and have a market cap. of over 3 billion Australian dollars. As safe as any public company can be?

SPORTINGBET AUSTRALIA www.sportingbet.com.au and CENTREBET are both owed by SportingBet PLC and once again are the same betting site under different banners and domains. Much like their competition they offer a huge array of sports and betting options also with competitive odds and many free giveaways and bonuses. This company (except for the Centrebet arm) are not quite as aggressive in their profiling on winning clients. That’s not to say that if you are a winning punter that you will not come under scrutiny, but you will not be cut down in betting amounts quite as aggressively as the others. Their web site is passable, however the colours are a strain on the eyes. Sportingbet PLC are on the London stock exchange and have a market cap. of around 500 million Australian dollars. This company is presently in talks with William Hill about a takeover bid and in my opinion they will soon be part of the William Hill betting group.

BET365 www.bet365.com.au have just recently entered the Australian betting scene. They have, like the others, a great array of sports and betting options, they are also very bonus and gift minded when it comes to giveaways. Their web site is about the best going around and they claim to be the world’s largest online betting company – which I have no real proof regarding the criteria they base that on, but have no reason not to believe it. BUT, like no other they have brought with them to the Australian betting scene the UK/European ‘Risk Management’ business model of profiling clients and they do it to the extreme in regard to horse, trots and dogs punters. I must also tell you that I have flown under their Risk Management radar (probably at this stage because I’m losing to them, I will keep you posted) but I only bet sports with them and keep my betting amounts to reasonable requests. I have been told they are equally aggressive to winning sports betting clients when it comes to being banned. Bet365 are a private company, run and mostly owned by the Coates family. Up until March 2012 they had reported revenue of one billion Australian dollars and an operating profit of around 160 million dollars. A pretty strong bookmaker by any means.

Now we come to the Australian privately owned Bookmakers and it is generally a sad state of affairs seeing what the Australian Bookmakers have become (and I use the term ‘Bookmaker’ very lightly these days). The independant private Bookmakers in this country have been lured down the path by the might of the four big corporates into emulating their business model. They have this notion that because the biggest corporates are doing it ‘this way’ then it must be the only way or most profitable way to conduct your business. Let me tell you it is not. Once again a subject for another blog. Now in the interest of fairness I will list them with a brief added comment. I only use these bookies for sports betting (my horse race betting is conducted 95% on Betfair). In many sports the private bookies don’t offer the range of bets and the competitive markets that the corporations can, also many have gone down the path of profiling clients and restricting betting amounts. They have bowed to the sterile, accountant run, business the corporations have changed the betting game into and are yet to realize that they can’t compete emulating the corp’s business model.

BETSTAR . Their site is basic but easy to use. Have gone down the path of profiling clients rather heavly and restrictions will come swiftly to your account if you happen to strike a lucky run or show ability in securing the best odds. Licensed out of the Northern Territory Australia and interestingly enough like all bookies in the NT guaranteed for nothing, but supposely (like Sports Acumen in the ACT) have all clients balances ringed in their bank accounts and are often subject to audits.

TOM WATERHOUSE . Didn’t last long with Tom, four or five bets on sports and given the “you are not the client we are looking for” phone call, account closed. From all reports I am hearing things haven’t got a lot better and, despite the 10′s of millions spent on advertising (pretty thing isn’t he?), Tom is happily marching the tune of the corp’s business model. Another basic but workable betting site. He is licensed in Victoria, Australia, therefore has some kind of bookies’ guarantee behind him, also as his TV appearances tell you “a long strong line of bookies in his blood”.

TOPSPORT. Lacking products on shelves regarding the markets they offer and sometimes a little uncompetitive odds, but when you do find a bet with them they will usually always accommodate all size bets on sports, and it seems they don’t ban or restrict winning betting accounts. Father and son run Bookmakers that offer a fair service with what they bet on. Licensed out of NSW, Australia, therefore have some similar bookies’ guarantee as Victoria.

SPORTSBETTING. Long standing operation that offers limited betting markets and betting events. But the praise worthy business practise this Bookie adheres to is that he guarantees to bet all his clients track limits and he doesn’t, as far as I’m aware, ban winning accounts. Their site is a delight to navigate. Licensed in the NT.

UNIBET.  Previously Betchoice but another Australian bookie brought out by foreign interests. Had a small peek at their web site and didn’t like what I saw. Haven’t seen much to offer that I don’t already have. Licensed in NT and Malta and owed by a public company listed on the Nordic stock exchange.

There are a few more private bookies I very occassionally bet with, but they are fast becomming redundant simply because they have no more to offer than I get else where.

Great write up logroller.

I had a massive losing streak with Sportingbet ages ago and then they rang me up to bar me.  I genuinely thought they were concerned I couldn't afford to keep losing so much money.

Luxbet seems a notable omission.  They were fine for a while but now every month send me an email banning me from a different betting product. "In three years you've never had a sports multi but now you're banned from them!"

Basically if they let you on it's cause they're confident you're a moron.

Its pretty simple Betfair and TABCORP are the only 2 and as much as people/other bookmakers want to slander TABCORP at least they have balls and set all the racing markets up for the other morons to copy. personal story with ladbrokes.

deposited 250. got two $125 free bets.

hit one of those on IADD when he beat atlantic jewel @ 10's
hit the other one on phoenix mercury in wnba @ 4ish

in order to withdraw, i had to turn over about 3.3k to withdraw. i did this less than two weeks with both footy grand finals on and x factor Laugh, spring carnival etc. the money hit my account yesterday (2.6k).

this is an excerpt from the email they sent me when i asked how much i needed to turn over.

* The BONUSBET terms state the minimum turnover requirement is equal to the total value of your free bets + any winnings as a result of those bets x 2 eg: ($XXX BONUS x 2 + Total Net Winnings from the Freebet x 2), so,

* In this instance ie: ($250.00 x 2) + ($1428.75 x 2) = Total T/o required of $3357.50.

Please be aware that only bets placed at odds greater than or equal to $1.50 constitute towards turnover.

Also, please note that placing of equal or zero margin bets, or hedge betting shall be considered irregular wagering for bonus wagering requirements and thus shall not constitute turnover.

Once this minimum level of turnover has been reached, we will be able to process your withdrawal requests at that time.

If we can be of any further assistance in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us.

i have no problem with them thus far. but we shall see...

the moral of my story for rookies and greenhorns is:

if you cannot turn over a huge amount, in a short amount of time, or you cannot afford to have a huge amount sitting idle in an account, do not put your bonus bet on something at super mega odds because you will have to turn over more than you can handle which can make you undisciplined.
