a great artcile read

and a terrific - must see - interview with vic on your you tube

5 starts as a 2yo .. and won the last one ... vic = "he won when we put the money on" gave me goosebumps - loved it

vic's comments on the shoeing was also fascinating - i'd not seen the 'tube' before & will watch it again for sure

Thebas...nothing sinister has been written, we can all share those special memories of Vo Rogue going out at sprinters speed and finish the race at the same speed....a special horse rarely seen these days.

interesting read, never washed or shod ...superstar.

VO Rogue, arguably the most popular champion of the modern era, has died. He was 28.

The mighty front-running Queenslander was the dominant horse in an era of champions, winning 26 races between 1986 and 1991, many at weight-for-age.

Vo Rogue won two Australian Cups – he also ran second in two – as well as the Manikato Stakes, Orr Stakes (twice), St George Stakes (twice), Futurity Stakes, Winfield Stakes (Perth) and Turnbull Stakes.

He was trained by battler Vic Rail, who died in 1994 after succumbing to the Hendra virus, and ridden in 22 of his victories by battling Queensland jockey Cyril Small.

Vo Rogue, who was never washed or shod, consistently out-ran champions Better loosen Up and Super Impose in an 83 start career.

Heart as big as an ox and watching him in full flight was as unforgettable as anything I've ever seen on a racetrack.

Early on in his career Super Impose was an eternal bridesmaid who ran second to Vo Rogue so many times people felt sorry for him.

How much did 'Splinter' Roberts pay for his share and what percentage ? And did the ownership of  Vo cloud his punting judgement and start the downturn in his punting exploits ?

Vo Rogue, Better Loosen Up and Super Impose, what a trio.

I wonder if these champion horses have some sense of how much they are admired?

I know this thread is about Vo Rogue, but Gary Roberts didn't just go broke backing Vo. He made most of his money backing a horse called Lockley's Tradition is a top class mile race at Moonee Valley (I think it was MV?).
He was a ratings man, but he started to release his ratings on a Saturday morning on 3UZ and when the bookies got wind of it they knew what was coming on any given race day. Roberts thought he was untouchable, but when you get too predictable you get eaten. He wasn't nearly as good as he thought he was.

Part-owner Gary Roberts, who loved watching Vo Rogue so much he bought a 20 per cent share in the horse late in his career for $180,000, said: ''He never got the credit he deserved on the racetrack and suppose now they might consider putting him in the hall of fame.''

Great horse. The combination was great for racing, Vic Rail was an old time horseman/character who knew Vo inside and out.

As an aside don't you hate it when you watch those old videos and out of the corner of your eye you see something steadily making ground and your brain instantly goes "who is that, must be on next time". Then a millisecond later you realise your in the wrong century.

They had a great 5 minute video on youtube showing all his best wins taking it down is a disgrace ffs

On his day Unbeatable 1800m 2000m dry track would have run any horse off their legs.

watching a video today on the great champ he led by 10-12 lengths rider simply could not control him and still kicked in the straight with 3-4 champions placing behind him now tell me what horse in this day and age could do that? None!

If any did they would tail off distanced and exhausted and in need of a long spell and likely not come up the next prep or two still getting over the run ffs

Vo not only hung on he kicked clear last 200m.
