iHoot - the question was - what "extreme" things have they done since having the BOP

i support the Greens but not everything they stand for - their entire policy wish list will never become reality BUT they will shape policy for the better in their current role

good to see you think popularity doesn't matter Jez, cause Abbott sure ain't popular

anyways - good to have you back

sorry about that AP - back to your opening post, it's a crock of s h i t e

taxes as a percentage of GDP lower than under Howard
By:
shiraz
When: 11 Apr 12 02:41
wombleoz, the OP was about personal tax burden.
Could you please explain how you calculate personal tax as a percentage of GDP?
By:
wombleoz
When: 11 Apr 12 03:15
Shiraz if tax under Howard was 25% of GDP and tax under Julia is 22% of GDP and it's a pretty reasonable assumption that individuals pay less. This is backed up by their being tax cuts since Labor took over

I think you are referring to ALL taxes, rather than personal taxes.

The Australian system of taxation and welfare is already the most efficient at redistributing wealth from rich to poor of any country in the OECD (and has been for many years), so there really is no need for changes.
It is a testement to the generally "social" attitude of the vast majority of Australian society.
By:

i'm referring to both

it's not even close to efficient in any way imo

Read this article wombleoz, "efficiency" can be used as a relative term.  The system itself may not be efficient overall, but it can be relatively efficient when compared to other systems.

http://inside.org.au/how-fair-is-australia%E2%80%99s-welfare-state/

This can also be applied to gambling.  If you are able to calculate probability on sporting outcomes more efficiently than the rest of the market, you will win.

interesting article Shiraz - i'd suggest he is taking too narrow an approach to "welfare" but he makes a lot of good points

cheers

ok - assuming avg income of $65k

tax in Howard's last year 2006-07 - $14,850

tax in 2011-12 - $13,050 + flood levy $75 = $13,125

or $1725 less

so you are WELL in front
By:
