Dear Sir,

Thank you for your email to Nick. He is currently out of the office and has asked me to respond on his behalf.

Nick shares your concerns on this issue and will be very happy to follow this up further at a Federal level.

He is very concerned about the practices you mentioned and those raised by others who have been in contact with us and is looking into ways to improve the legislative arrangements regarding sportsbetting.

Thank you for taking the time to write to Nick on this issue.

Kind regards,
Danielle

Report BJT March 31, 2012 4:57 AM BST
I have seen less interesting stories on shows like ACA or Today Tonight or similar.  I am sure punters able to bet with these corps may have some sort of an opinion on knowing the truth about the reported bets, and the fact that they weed out all punters to the biggest losers they can.
The whole process is discriminatory, and goes completely against the problem gambling rubbish that they promote on their site.  That is who they are targetting, and only them.  Offering credit to losing punters, and not touching anybody with a shred of intelligence.

We have to hear all the bullshit about problem gamblers and the problem it is to society, but the reality is the ratio will only go up, because these will soon be the only people allowed to bet anywhere.  Tatts even knocking back cash bettors in their outlets it seems.  A new T+C on the website all about their ability to restrict your turnover based on how much you win.

Get it out there that not all gamblers are degenerates with their children going hungry and their wives having to turn to prostitution to cover the debts created.

Get together as a group, from people barred who turnover 50 bucks a week, to those that turned over thousands.  Punters barred from 1 winning bet to the highrollers.

It is a good story to show a hugely succesful punter getting barred from betting with a company, but it is a great story to show that EVERY succesful punter no matter how small the profit will be banned for having an account in profit.

Organise it, hit it hard.  Any half assed sob story of a guy that had his account closed.  But somebody with a list of thousands of names of people that have had their accounts closed will show the reality of the situation.
ACA or Today Tonight would be my suggestion, of course if done right.

Look, the point is they WILL take a bet, but only on things they want to lay heavily. They allow me to continue because I hit the things they want to lay. I am not trying to big-note here. Just trying to make the point that they will not lay you unless it's on their terms. In other words, if your betting patterns suggest you are a numpty, even if you are in profit overall, they will allow you to continue, as I have with them since 2002.

Received an email today.

'Unfortunately we have had to close your account. Please do not take it personally, as it is simply a commercial decision. We were proud of the fact that Betchoice was one of the few bookmakers that did not close winning accounts, but due to the win by Racing NSW in the High Court we must now move to a low volume/high margin model, and hence keeping winning accounts open is no longer an option for us. The balance of your outstanding funds has been sent back to you.

Apologies for having to do this to you and thankyou for your prior business.

Betchoice were recently bought by a UK firm as the above link shows.  This would be the main reason for account closures as they are following the UK approach.  The High Court decision would be a factor too but it is a convenient excuse

I can understand why the UK bookies like to close down winners and even small losers as they do.  But I cannot understand why the Aussie racing authorities let them do it.  It is not in the interest of Aussie racing to have punters barred from betting and it would be better for Aussie racing down the track if the bookies they have to deal with are not just a couple of mega firms like they have in the UK.  Dealing with smaller, less rich and powerful bookies will be easier than dealing with billion dollar companies who then pay racing a pittance as happens in the UK

Bookies having to bet all customers to a certain amount like on track bookies in Australia should be a condition of betting on the races in Australia

I don't bet horses or I think it would be all over for me and I'd have to get a real job. Betting sports keeps me going for the time being since they don't seem too perturbed by my activities to date.
Why are the bookies selling up en masse? Are they being made offers too good to refuse? Seems way off base to me. Why buy up betting agencies and then kill off the turnover?
I liked Manikato's post. I think you hit it on the head. Only trouble with the theory is that people always find money to gamble with. Will probably add weight to Xenophon's argument because there won't be any winners and the losers will all be broke and destitute.

Your bet was cancelled due to the following Sportsbet Rules:

29. Notwithstanding anything contained elsewhere in these Terms and Conditions, if Sportsbet publishes, posts or quotes any incorrect betting information for any sporting event, such as posting wrong dividends or lines, then regardless of the cause or source of such error:
29.1 If an error is identified before, during or after an event, the Member whose bet on that event has been accepted or confirmed by Sportsbet, the bet/s may be void and the Member will be notified.
29.2 If Sportsbet can demonstrate that the error was manifest or obvious, or that the Member otherwise should reasonably have been aware of the error when the bet was placed, all bets shall be void.

Interesting under those conditions technically they could in hindsight claim that the 4bucks Swan or whaterver they bet yesterday was the wrong price and void all winning bets not saying it will but technically it could, what happens if a really big punter decided liked I did that Swans are close to close to good things and wanted unloaded several hundred thousand or more on them are they then not going to pay out because in hindisght it was an obvious error, sorry we just realised the match was in reality a 50/50 game and the correct price should have been 1.90, technically under those rules it could happen.

They should all be named and shamed publicly and Aussies should boycott using them, sounds like Tom Waterhouse may get some new business. Laugh

I pretty much gave betting up several years ago apart from some big horse races, the writing was on the wall back a few years i think.

i was curious as to a "Govt Definition" or "Commission Definition" of 'problem gambling'

... wiki had something naturally

Most other definitions of problem gambling can usually be simplified to any gambling that causes harm to the gambler or someone else in any way.

However, these definitions are usually coupled with descriptions of the type of harm or the use of diagnostic criteria.

According to DSM-IV, Pathological gambling is now defined as separate from a manic episode. Only when the gambling occurs independent of other impulsive, mood, or thought disorders is it considered its own diagnosis. In order to be diagnosed, an individual must have at least five of the following symptoms:

1.Preoccupation. The subject has frequent thoughts about gambling experiences, whether past, future, or fantasy.

2.Tolerance. As with drug tolerance, the subject requires larger or more frequent wagers to experience the same "rush".

3.Withdrawal. Restlessness or irritability associated with attempts to cease or reduce gambling.

4.Escape. The subject gambles to improve mood or escape problems.

5.Chasing. The subject tries to win back gambling losses with more gambling.

6.Lying. The subject tries to hide the extent of his or her gambling by lying to family, friends, or therapists.

7.Loss of control. The person has unsuccessfully attempted to reduce gambling.

8.Illegal acts. The person has broken the law in order to obtain gambling money or recover gambling losses. This may include acts of theft, embezzlement, fraud, or forgery.

9.Risked significant relationship. The person gambles despite risking or losing a relationship, job, or other significant opportunity.

10.Bailout. The person turns to family, friends, or another third party for financial assistance as a result of gambling.

As with many disorders, the DSM-IV definition of pathological gambling is widely accepted and used as a basis for research and clinical practice internationally.

The only way you can beat them is become really good at tipping for their free prizes. Only extreme losers are welcome!

Ok LE, to address your question/comment:

Where head to head prices are subject to change, significant movement in the line is used as a method of determining the legality or otherwise of said bet.
I remember a few years ago where the Hawks went from $3.00 to 1.50 on the back of the Saints resting many of their stars for a game in Tassie late in the season with nothing to play for. In that case, Sportsbet could conceivably have cancelled bets made prior to the news on the basis that the REAL price should have been opposite (the inverse of 3.00 is 1.50). This only happened one time that I can remember, but it does beg the question "what if they had chosen to envoke the 'wrong price' clause in that situation?" Would an independent arbiter have been able to prevent them...

Scary stuff for pro gamblers to contemplate, especially if you attempt to arbitrage at a later stage.

While a game is under way, the team will often create special, one-off bets triggered by events, or even talking points raised by the commentators.
If Rooney is on a yellow card, they might put the odds up for him to be sent off. Graham Sharpe personally handles some of the stranger requests that come into William Hill.
‘When a cat ran on to the pitch at Anfield we opened  a new market on what would be the next animal to run on and sure enough, a few Saturdays later at QPR a squirrel came on, so we paid out.
'When we reopened the book the other day somebody bet on a unicorn, which we offered at 1,000 to 1.
‘I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we see a bloke in a unicorn outfit turning up on the pitch tonight.’

Joel. After it was pointed out that Hawks were 18+ I put a few small multis on - total about 100 bucks. Bets weren't voided.  Sad

Bets now limited to $500 payout. Well that's the end of that. I have plenty of mates who like $500 bets Grin.
They will be chasing me for years trying to stop me.
I was told by one of said mates that I should report this to the AW rumour file and name and shame them. Anyone know if this is worthwhile?
I am now invested in launching a campaign against their shoddy activities here.

They seem ok, Dos. Their head to head prices are competitive, but their exotic stuff doesnt come out til late. The thing I like about Sportsbet is they put prices up early and they bet all kinds of exotics in the run. Nobody else does that.

I like to set up early and follow (or create) movement to maximise profitability. It's hard to do that when they don't put stuff up 'til Thursday.
I can use them when the cashflow improves though. It's improving week to week so I should be able to throw stuff their way soonish.

I need to find a bookmaker who offers HT/FT doubles on fave/dog that's competitive. That is my fave bet type and Sportsbet do that better than anyone else.

Haven't used them yet, Juggler. Dos is the guy to ask.

Betsquesy - the latest weak bookie to ban punters. "Your style of betting (winning presumably) does not suit our business. If you were a genuine punter (code for loser?) we might be more inclined to bet you". Never had a fixed price bet only used their tote product.

Was doing my budgets this morning and found an anomoly with the Sportingbet prices, so I had $100 at 4.75 on something that should have been 2.20. Then I thought about it because Sportsbet cancelled an obvious wrong price from last week, so I rang them (Sportingbet) and told them what the problem was and they let me keep the bet at the higher price.
Finally, a bookmaker with some integrity...
