The algorithm required to bot control this form of trading is very complex. Most people don't have the skills to program them, and if they do they don't have the knowledge and experience required to design them.
There are a couple of good ones around, but they are owner controlled and not available for public consumption.
In short, they don't work unless you want very simple operations. Complexity will crash them every time.
Report therhino January 24, 2012 6:15 AM GMT
Nice answer whisker. What do they actually do for you? Do they place bets on your behalf? Again, excuse the ignorance.

I would never restrict myself to a bot, Gruss is a betfair interface that works sending and receiving information from the betfair API.

It is just like using the website except it works and works a lot faster.

It has different options for displaying the prices like the normal website or in a ladder that most traders prefer.

It integrates with excel and from here you can design your own bot to anything you like, at just $11 a month or $60 a year the subscription price hits the sweet spot.

If you use betfair on a daily basis and are not using software like this then you are at a clear disadvantage.

Report Beat The OverRound January 25, 2012 12:25 AM GMT
A bot won't make you a profit, you must already have a winning strategy.
The bot enables you to automate that strategy or place bets faster or use the ladder for trading.
It is simply a tool.
Any bot seller that tries to sell you "profit on autopilot" is full of it.
A good example of this are the many staking bots that provide you with various staking plans.
Better off saving your money.

Temlee, I think you are being harsh.
What is the problem?
The guy is entitled to be on holidays.
Did you use the trial first and see if it worked for you before forking out?
If you did, then any other problems can surely wait a week?

Logroller of your "Billsh!t" statement apploes to using a bot fair enough but I don't think No_BS is using the rhird poarty application in that manner. If he's not I agree with him completely.

Time is money and oppourtunity.
Report No_BS January 26, 2012 11:29 PM GMT
I guess i don't use the term bot in the same way as some think of them.

The application i use can be set up just like an automated bot or can be used in manual mode.

Compared to the website it is much faster and if used for trading it can be used in running this is something the site can't be used for.

There is no in built strategy you still need a winning method to make your punting pay.

The main thing i like is the excel integration, when it comes to using the program from the main interface i can't even tell you how everything works.

99% of the time i use excel where i can bring in data from betfair, TABs and Bookies and use this information to decide on bets i would like to place and have this automated so i can do other things.

I am sure there are other people using the program that have never linked it to excel and use the built in controls.

I will promote this program when ever i can because i believe it to be the best, you can try it for 30 days unlimited with everything running and decide for yourself.

Mike is entitled to have a holiday, and I'm sure if you gave him a chance he would extend your membership/licence for the time you had down and were unable to use it.

I found Mike very helpful and completely genuine.  The bot itself is very useful for so many types of betting purposes, and also incredibly stable as we stability tested it on the an ancient version of windows with everything turned right down, and nothing went wrong.

It's the best bot on the market as far as I'm concerned, so if you want one go get this one, and take a 7 day free trial.

Agree with No_BS.  If you aren't using an API product you are costing yourself money.

I have only just started using Gruss as I started up a bot that I got somebody to program for me with my specifications, but all my main formulas are on my machine.  All bot refers to, is automated betting.  It does what you want it to do, but does it before you would even know you were supposed to be considering it.  To suggest using a bot won't make you money is ridiculous.

I agree that buying a ready made bot is never going to end well, if it is being sold as ready to make you money.  As BTOR said, it is the strategy that makes the money, not the bot.  But the bot makes it more efficiently and provides opportunities and data manipulation that is impossible for the human brain to even consider in real time BUT it has to consider them before hand to be able to program the bot to calculate it in the first place.

As is common sense, you can't buy a winning strategy, as the more doing it, the more it changes.  Even if something is showing a profit on paper, doesn't mean that remains when money is put down, especially if this is being sold to all and sundry.  The reality is, people that do this most likely are doing the opposite, as they know how many people are using a specific strategy, and can easily automate rorting that.

To suggest that bots are a scam is a little bit silly though.  It is the winning systems that are the scam.  The bot is simply an automated bet program.

Take the simplest one for example.  The simplest automated betting strategy, is to monitor the markets, and as soon as the back side goes under 100%, your program triggers, taking all prices on offer to a certain payout.  The bot has just backed every runner in the race for a profit.  And it will do the same thing the next time it happens.
Do you think it is a secret how the markets are always so efficient?
Or the obvious one.  Betfair.  Do you think BF have people sitting there on cross matching markets working everything out?  Or do you think their system is automated?  Exactly the same thing.

Seems some people in here are actually quite clueless in regards to them.  Logroller for instance, appears to believe that a 3rd party app for BF is a scam, or a bot?  3rd party API apps are simply a more efficient display of what the BF website offers you.  They take the data from Betfair, and set it up in a user friendly way.

No-BS, that statement is complete bullsh!t

A completely naive statement.
example A.
Horse A is trading at 3.00.  Low liquidity market.
Logroller is waiting around on the betfair website as he wants a bet at 3.50 but doesn't want to scare the market.
BJT is sitting there simply wanting the best odds he can get.

Logroller screen refreshes, still no money in the market.  Then it refreshes again, and 3.50 is available for him to back.  Happy days.

Meanwhile.
BJT, for the 30 seconds Logroller was waiting for his 3.50, has been watching money get taken at a variety of odds, watching 4 updates of prices every second.  He saw a spike in the market that saw hundreds of dollars laying off at 4.50.  He took it all, then put in a lay bet at 3.50.  20 seconds later, it was matched.
Cheers Logroller.  Glad you got the bet you wanted.....  Laugh

By using the website, Logroller missed the 4.50.  In fact, he didn't even know it happened.  He figured happy days because it went from 3.00 to 3.50, but the reality being he only got 3.50 because somebody was making money out of him since they took the 4.50.

People really need to learn the difference between what everything really is before even commenting.  Zero wrong with API products.  Geeks Toy is the best, Gruss is very good, and the choice if you want data manipulation through Excel.
Bots, are fine.  In fact they are very helpful.
Betting systems, are a scam.
Don't mistake somebody selling a bot with a betting system as a scam.  I am sure the bets fire in exactly as they should.  It is just the system they are following to fire those bets in is a crock of siht.

It is Mike Smith here. For the sake of fairness, I've decided to leave a comment in this thread. Unfortunately, this post has came to my attention just now.
To "templee".
Like any hard working person I have the right for holidays. It is true that I was on holidays that time, but it is the only fair statement in your post.
It is not true that I refused to help you. The true is that you've received an auto reply email explaining that I am on holidays and my answers may take longer than usual, but should be expected in 24 hours though. Your support query was sent at 00:52 GMT (because of time difference with Australia I guess) and obviously I could not reply straight away. However you kept sending me aggressive messages swearing on me that I am on holidays with your money. Despite this, I politely responded to your inquiry on first opportunity within 24 hours and provided a working key to activate the bot, as well as simple instructions on how to do it. The instructions explained the fact that your name is case sensitive and must be entered accordingly along with the license key. You must have failed to do so.
Instead, you continued sending abusive messages to me in a rude manner. I have decided to no longer respond to these messages, then our dialogue has stopped.
The time and content of my responses (as well as all correspondence) can be checked by logging into our support system using your email and support ticket number (I do not publish them here for reasons of privacy, but could provide in a personal message).
Now regarding the MONEY. You are saying that I took over your money. It is absolutely lie, because the money have been returned to you on 7th FEB 2013 (chargeback was received) and I have an email from our payment processor confirming this fact.
Despite it was solely your failure to follow simple instructions to enter the license key and your money were returned to you, you've posted on forums blaming on me and trying to make a negative reputation to our company. Is this fair?

To everyone.
Fortunately, such cases as this are rare. Most of the customers are satisfied with our services and successfully use our bot for betting automation on Betfair. We provide support to all customers, even after years since purchase. If you have any questions on this case, I am ready to provide relevant evidence about the outlined information.

As for the question regarding the bots, I can say from personal experience that bot is not enough to guarantee success. Success in betting requires a good system that can find you valued horses. Bot only helps to automate the process of betting and calculations on which you would spend a lot of time doing it manually or to increase the speed with Betfair, which is very important when betting inplay.
